किमर्थं वाद्य चित्तं ते यौवने भोगनिःस्पृहम्
'For what reason is your mind, in youth, so indifferent to enjoyment?'
हंसतूलमयीं शय्यां मुक्तामयवितानिकाम्
'A bed made of swan's down, canopies of pearls—'
तपोजडो मृडो दिष्ट्या प्रागेवास्ति त्वयोज्झितः 1.3.2.19.
'By good fortune, you have already abandoned the dullness of austerity, O gentle one.'
किं तु त्रैलोक्यनाथोऽस्ति महिषो दानवेश्वरः
'But there is the lord of the three worlds, Mahisha, king of the Daityas.'
किं निह्नवेन नन्वेष श्रुत्वा सर्वं चिरात्प्रभुः
'Why deny it? Surely he, the lord, has heard everything by now.'
इत्यत्यंतविरुद्धं तां ब्रुवाणामसमंजसम्
Thus, speaking to her in a most improper and utterly contrary manner—
सा चातिरोषेण कृतप्रतिज्ञा दैत्यरूपिका
She, in the form of a Daitya woman, made a vow in great anger.
सोऽपि तत्सर्वमाकर्ण्य रुषातीवारुणेक्षणः
He too, hearing all this, his eyes reddened with rage—
स्यन्दनैर्द्विरदैरश्वैः पत्तिभिश्च समंततः
With chariots, elephants, horses, and infantry on all sides—
क्ष्वेलितैर्वाद्यघोषैश्च नभः स्फुटदिवाभवत्
With the blaring of trumpets and the clamor of drums, the sky seemed to split.
करालो दुर्द्धरस्तस्य विचष्णुर्विकरालकः
Ferocious, hard to subdue, ever-roving, with a terrifying appearance—
महाहनुर्महामौलिरुग्रास्यो विकटेक्षणः
With massive jaws, a great crown, a fierce mouth, and dreadful eyes.
कोलाहलमिमं श्रुत्वा देवी नियमविघ्नतः 1.3.2.19.
Hearing this tumult, the goddess, due to the disruption of her observance,
सारुणाद्रिरहोद्रोण्यामधिरूढा मृगाधिपम्
mounted the lord of beasts in the crimson mountain valley,
घनाघनरवोदग्रं सिंहनादमचीकरत्
she produced a lion's roar, loud as thunderclouds.
स्वांगेभ्यो योगिनीचक्रं मातरोऽप्यसृजन्रुषा
From their own bodies, the Mothers also, in anger, released the circle of Yoginis.
काश्चित्तत्रारुणच्छाया दंडिन्यो हंसवाहनाः
Some there, with reddish hue, wielding staffs, rode on swans.
निर्ययुः काश्चन क्रुद्धा ज्वलत्त्रिशिखपाणयः
Others, enraged, emerged holding flaming tridents.
निर्जग्मुरपराः सेनासहिताः शिखिवाहनैः
Still others departed, accompanied by armies, riding peacocks.
निश्चक्रमुः परास्तार्क्ष्यमधिरुह्याधिकक्रुधा
Others, with greater fury, went forth riding Garuda.
प्रतिष्ठंते तथा व्याघ्रवाहाः कुवलयत्विषः
Likewise, tiger-mounted ones, radiant as blue lotuses, set out.
रोषारुणसहस्राक्ष्यो वलक्षद्विपवाहनाः
With wrathful, red, thousand-eyed forms, some rode on elephants with spotted hides.
अश्वारूढा समापेतुरेकाः सौदामिनीनिभाः ।। 1.3.2.19.
Some, mounted on horses, gathered together, shining like lightning.
ताश्च कोटिचतुःषष्टिमसुरानाश्रमाद्बहिः
And those four crore sixty lakh, outside the asura hermitage,
ततश्च योगिनीचक्रदानवानीकयोर्मिथः
Then, between the Yogini circle and the demon host,
सायकैर्योगिनीमुक्तैर्दलिता दैत्यमौलयः
The crowns of the demons were shattered by arrows released by the Yoginis.
प्रसस्रू रक्तसरितो लगत्कैशिकशैवलाः
Blood rivers flowed, with kaishika grass as their reeds.
वेतण्डतुण्डान्यारुह्य सौधानिव पिशाचिकाः
The ghouls, mounting the beaks of vultures, like palaces,
कपालैर्दैत्यवीराणामघासुरसृगासवान्
With skulls of demon warriors, filled with the blood-liquor of evil demons,
परिजह्रुस्तथांत्राणि कंकौघाः पाशशंकया
Thus, the flocks of vultures seized entrails, suspecting them to be ropes.
