लोमशो लोमचरणो भरद्वाजोथ गौतमः
Lomaśa, Lomacaraṇa, Bharadvāja, and Gautama as well.
जमदग्निश्च संवर्तो मतंगो भरतोंशुमान् 4.1.11.
Jamadagni, Saṃvarta, Mataṅga, Bharata, and Aṃśumān were there.
ऋष्यशृंगोथ दुर्वासा रुचिर्नारदतुंबुरू
Ṛṣyaśṛṅga, Durvāsas, Ruci, Nārada, and Tumburu were present.
शालंकायनहारी तौ विश्वामित्रोथभार्गवः
Śālaṅkāyana, Hārīta, Viśvāmitra, and Bhārgava were there.
धौम्योपमन्युवत्साद्या मुनयो मुनिकन्यकाः । तच्छांत्यर्थं समाजग्मुर्धन्यं विश्वानराश्रमम्
Sages like Dhaumya, Upamanyu, Vatsa, and the daughters of sages all gathered at the hermitage of Viśvānara for that act of peace.
ब्रह्मा बृहस्पतियुतो देवो गरुडवाहनः
Brahmā, accompanied by Bṛhaspati, and the god who rides Garuḍa, arrived.
महेंद्रमुख्या गीर्वाणा नागाः पातालवासिनः
The gods led by Indra, and the Nāgas who dwell in the netherworld, also came.
स्थावरा जंगमं रूपं धृत्वा याताः सहस्रशः
Thousands came, assuming forms both immovable and moving.
जातकर्म स्वयं चक्रे तस्य देवः पितामहः
The god Pitāmaha himself performed the birth-rites for him.
इति नाम ददौ तस्मै देयमेकादशेहनि
On the eleventh day, he gave him the name that was to be given.
अयमग्निर्गृहपतिर्गार्हपत्यः प्रजाया वसुवित्तमः
This is Agni, the lord of the household, the Gārhapatya, best among the wealthy and progenitors.
अग्ने गृहपते स्थित्या परामपि निदर्शयन् 4.1.11.
O Agni, lord of the house, you demonstrate the highest state by your very presence.
कृत्वा बालोचितां रक्षां हरेण हरिणा सह
Having performed the protection suitable for a child, together with Hari, by Hari.
अहोरूपमहो तेजस्त्वहो सर्वांगलक्षणम्
Oh, what a wondrous form! Oh, what brilliance! Oh, what auspicious marks on every limb!
अथवा किमिदं चित्रं शर्वभक्तजनेष्वहो
Or else, what is so remarkable about this, indeed, among the devotees of Śarva?
इति स्तुवंतस्त्वन्योन्यं जग्मुः सर्वे यथागतम्
Thus praising one another, they all departed as they had come.
अतः पुत्रं समीहंते गृहस्थाश्रमवासिनः
Therefore, householders desire a son.
अपुत्रस्य गृहं शून्यमपुत्रस्यार्जनं वृथा
The house of one without a son is empty; the wealth of one without a son is in vain.
न पुत्रात्परमो लाभो न पुत्रात्परमं सुखम्
There is no gain greater than a son, nor happiness greater than a son.
औरसः क्षेत्रजः क्रीतो दत्तः प्राप्तः सुतासुतः
Whether born of one's own body, from the wife, purchased, given, or obtained—such a son is a son.
एषामन्यतमः कार्यो गृहस्थेन विपश्चिता
Any one of these should be acquired by a discerning householder.
अन्नप्राशनमब्दार्धे चूडाब्दे चार्थवत्कृता ।। 4.1.11.
The ceremony of first feeding is performed at six months, and the tonsure in the first year, as is proper.
कर्णवेधं ततः कृत्वा श्रवणर्क्षे सकर्मवित्
Then, having performed the ear-piercing ceremony under the auspicious star, with proper rites,
उपाकर्म ततः कृत्वा वेदानध्यापयत्सुधीः
After that, having performed the initiation, the wise one instructs him in the Vedas.
विद्याजातं समस्तं च साक्षिमात्राद्गुरोर्मुखात्
All knowledge and learning is imparted directly from the mouth of the teacher, as a witness.
ततोथ नवमे वर्षे पित्रोः शुश्रूषणे रतम्
Then, in the ninth year, he becomes devoted to serving his parents.
विश्वानरोटजं प्राप्य देवर्षिर्नारदः सुधीः
Having obtained Viśvānarotaja, the wise divine sage Nārada—
कुरुते युवयोर्वाक्यमयं गृहपतिः शिशुः
The householder child carries out the words spoken by you both.
नान्यत्तीर्थं न वा देवो न गुरुर्न च सत्किया
There is no other holy place, nor god, nor teacher, nor good deed—
न पित्रोरधिकं किंचित्त्रिलोक्यां तनयस्य हि
For a son, there is nothing greater than his parents in the three worlds.
