न दरिद्रा न च दुःखार्ता न व्याधि परिपीडिताः
There are neither the poor, nor those afflicted by suffering, nor those tormented by disease.
संक्रमेषु न यैर्दत्तं न स्नातं तीर्थवारिषु 4.1.9.
Those who have not given gifts at the transitions, nor bathed in the waters of holy places—
ते दृश्यंते प्रतिद्वारं विहीन नयनाननाः
They are seen at every gate, deprived of eyes and faces.
समं कृष्णलकेनापि यो दद्यात्कांचनं कृती
Even one who gives a single black grain, or gold, with devotion—
सर्वं गंगासमं तोयं सर्वे ब्रह्मसमा द्विजाः
All water is equal to that of the Ganga; all Brahmins are equal to Brahma.
दत्तं जप्तं हुतं स्नातं यत्किंचित्सदनुष्ठितम्
Whatever is given, recited, offered in fire, or bathed, if properly performed—
रविवारे संक्रमश्चेदुपरागोऽथवाभवेत्
If a transition occurs on a Sunday, or if there is an eclipse—
भानुवारो यदा षष्ठ्यां सप्तम्यामथ जायते
When Sunday falls on the sixth or seventh lunar day—
हंसो भानुः सहस्रांशुस्तपनस्तापनो रवि
He is called Hamsa, Bhanu, Sahasramsu, Tapana, Tapana, Ravi—
विश्वरूपो विश्वकर्ता मार्तंडो मिहिरोंऽशुमान्
Vishvarupa, Vishvakarta, Martanda, Mihira, Amshuman—
द्वादशात्मा सप्तहयो भास्करो हस्करः खगः
He who has twelve forms, seven horses, Bhaskara, Haskara, Khaga—
त्रिलोकेशो लोकसाक्षीतमोरिः शाश्वतः शुचिः 4.1.9.
Lord of the three worlds, witness of the worlds, Amuri, eternal, pure—
द्युमणिर्हरिदश्वोर्को भानुमान्भयनाशनः
Radiant jewel, with green horses, Orka, Bhanu, destroyer of fear—
एकचक्ररथो मित्रो मंदेहारिस्तमिस्रहा
He whose chariot has one wheel, Mitra, foe of the Mandehas, destroyer of darkness—
हेलिकश्चित्रभानुश्च कलिघ्नस्तार्क्ष्यवाहनः
Helika, Chitrabhanu, destroyer of Kali, rider of Tarkshya—
घर्मरश्मिर्दुर्निरीक्ष्यश्चंडांशुः कश्यपात्मजः
He of hot rays, difficult to behold, fierce-rayed, son of Kashyapa—
प्रणवादि चतुर्थ्यंतैर्नमस्कार समन्वितैः
With the syllable Om and the endings of the fourth case, accompanied by salutations—
विगृह्य पाणियुग्मेन ताम्रपात्रं सुनिर्मलम्
Taking a spotless copper vessel with both hands—
करवीरादि कुसुमै रक्तचंदनमिश्रितैः
With flowers such as oleander, mixed with red sandalwood,
दद्यादर्घ्यमनर्घ्याय सवित्रे ध्यानपूर्वकम्
One should offer arghya to the priceless Savitṛ, preceded by meditation.
प्रतिमंत्रं नमस्कुर्यादुदयास्तमये रविम्
At sunrise and sunset, one should bow to the Sun with each mantra.
एवं कुर्वन्नरो जातु न दरिद्रो न दुःखभाक् 4.1.9.
A person who does so is never poor nor afflicted by suffering.
विनौषधैर्विना वैद्यैर्विनापथ्यपरिग्रहैः
Without medicines, without physicians, and without dietary restrictions,
इत्येकदेशः कथितो भानुलोकस्य सत्तम
Thus, a portion concerning the world of the Sun has been described, O noble one.
स्वकर्णविषयीकुर्वन्नितिपुण्यकथामिमाम्
Whoever makes this virtuous tale reach his own ears,
न दरिद्रो भवेत्क्वापि नाधर्मेषु प्रवर्तते
Will never be poor anywhere, nor engage in unrighteous acts.
ब्राह्मणैः सततं श्राव्यमिदमाख्यानमुत्तमम्
This excellent narrative should always be recited by brāhmaṇas.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शृण्वंतोऽध्यायमुत्तमम्
Brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas, and vaiśyas, hearing this supreme chapter,
नयनानंदसंदोहदायिनीपूरनुत्तमा
Bestows a flood of joy upon the eyes and is supremely fulfilling.
गणावूचतुः शिवशर्मन्महाभागसुतीर्थफलितद्रुम
The Gaṇas said: O highly fortunate Śivaśarman, tree bearing the fruit of holy pilgrimage,
