अस्मिँल्लोके सदा कालं स्मृतिरेषा प्रगीयते 4.1.8.
In this world, at all times, this remembrance is always sung.
इति शृण्वन्क्षणात्प्राप पुनरन्यन्मनोहरम्
Hearing thus, in an instant he attained another delightful thing.
गणावूचतुः असौ वैद्याधरो लोको नाना विद्या विशारदाः
The Gaṇas spoke: This Vaidhyādhara world is filled with experts in various sciences.
औषधान्यपि यच्छंति तत्पीडाशमनानि हि
They also give medicines that indeed relieve suffering.
शिष्यं पुत्रेण पश्यंति वस्त्र तांबूल भोजनैः
They regard their disciples as sons, providing clothes, betel, and food.
अभिलाषधिया नित्यं पूजयंतीष्टदेवताः
With desire in their minds, they constantly worship their chosen deities.
यावदित्थं कथां चक्रुस्तावत्संयमिनीपतिः
As they continued their conversation thus, meanwhile the lord of Saṃyaminī—
सोम्यमूर्तिर्विमानस्थो धर्मज्ञैः परिवारितः
With a gentle form, seated in a celestial vehicle, surrounded by those who know dharma,
धर्मराज उवाच कुलोचितं ब्राह्मणानां भवता प्रतिपादितम्
Dharmarāja spoke: You have explained what is proper for the Brahmins according to their lineage.
वेदाभ्यासः कृतः पूर्वं गुरवश्चापि तोषिताः
The study of the Vedas was done previously, and the teachers were also satisfied.
क्षालितं मुक्तिपुर्यद्भिराशुगंतृशरीरकम् 4.1.8.
By you, the body that swiftly travels to the city of liberation has been cleansed.
कलेवरं पूतिगंधि सदैवाशुचिभाजनम्
The body, always foul-smelling, is indeed a vessel of impurity.
अतएवाहि पांडित्यमाद्रिंयते विचक्षणाः
Therefore, the wise honor scholarship.
निमेषान्पंचपान्मर्त्ये प्राणंति प्राणिनो ध्रुवम्
In the mortal world, living beings certainly breathe for five handfuls of moments.
स्थिरापायः सदा कायो न धनं निधनेऽवति
The body is always unstable and perishes; wealth does not remain at the time of death.
सत्वरं गत्वरं चायुर्लोकः शोकसमाकुलः
Life passes quickly and the world is filled with sorrow.
सत्कर्मणो विपाकोऽयं तव वंद्यौ ममाप्यहो
This is the result of your virtuous deeds—how worthy of reverence, even to me!
ममाज्ञा दीयतां तस्मात्साहाय्यं करवाणि किम्
Therefore, give me your command—what assistance shall I render?
अद्य धन्यतरोस्मीह यद्दृष्टौ भगवद्गणौ
Today I am most blessed here, for I have seen the hosts of the Blessed Lord.
ततः प्रस्थापितस्ताभ्यां प्राविशत्स्वपुरीं यमः
Then, having been sent off by them, Yama entered his own city.
धर्म्याण्येव वचांस्यस्य मनः प्रीतिकराणि च ।। 4.1.8.
His words were indeed righteous and pleasing to the mind.
पुरी संयमनी सेयमतीव शुभलक्षणा
This city of Samyamani is marked by excellent auspicious signs.
यमरूपं वर्णयंति मर्त्यलोकेऽन्यथा जनाः
People in the mortal world describe Yama’s form differently.
केन पश्यंत्यमुं लोकं निवसंति तथात्र के
By what means do some see that world, and who dwells there?
धर्ममूर्तिः प्रकृत्यैव निःशंकैः पुण्यराशिभिः
The very embodiment of Dharma, by nature, is surrounded by fearless hosts of merit.
अयमेव हि पिंगाक्षः क्रोधरक्तांतलोचनः
This is indeed the tawny-eyed one, with eyes bloodshot in anger.
ऊर्ध्वकेशोऽतिकृष्णांगः प्रलयांबुदनिःस्वनः
His hair stands upright, his body is intensely dark, and his voice roars like a storm cloud.
आनयैनं पातयैनं बधानामुंच दुर्दम
Bring him! Throw him down! Bind him! Release that uncontrollable one!
आताडयैनं दुर्वृत्तं धृत्वा पादौ शिलातले
Strike this wicked one! Hold his feet on the stone slab!
एतस्य गल्लावुत्फुल्लौ क्षुरेणाशुवि पाटय
With a razor, swiftly split open his swollen cheeks!
