न गौरी न महालक्ष्मीश्चित्रेपि परिलेखिते
Neither Gaurī nor Mahālakṣmī have I depicted, not even in paintings.
सुसूक्ष्माणि विचित्राणि नोज्ज्वलान्यंबराण्यपि
I have not made fine, varied, radiant garments, nor even delicate ones.
न तिलाश्च घृतेनाक्ताः सुसमिद्धे हुताशने
Nor have I offered sesame seeds anointed with ghee into a well-kindled fire.
श्रीसूक्तं पावमानी च ब्राह्मणो मंडलानि च
I have not recited the Śrīsūkta, the Pavamānī, nor performed the Brāhmaṇa maṇḍalas.
अश्वत्थ सेवा न कृता त्यक्त्वा चार्कं त्रयोदशीम्
I have not served the aśvattha tree, nor observed the thirteenth day after abandoning the arka.
शयनीयं न चोत्सृष्टं मृदुला च प्रतूलिका
I have not relinquished a bed, nor a soft pillow.
अजाश्वमहिषी मेषी दासी कृष्णाजिनं तिलाः
A she-goat, horse, buffalo, sheep, maidservant, black antelope skin, sesame seeds—none have I given.
पादाभ्यंगं दीपदानं प्रपादानं विशेषतः 4.1.7.
I have not performed foot-massage, lamp-offering, or especially the washing of feet.
नित्यश्राद्धं भूतबलिं तथाऽतिथि समर्चनम्
I have not conducted daily śrāddha, offerings to spirits, nor honored guests.
न यमं यमदूतांश्च नयामीरपि यातनाः
I do not lead Yama or his messengers, nor do I inflict punishments.
कृच्छ्रचांद्रायणादीनि तथा नक्तव्रतानि च
Nor have I observed the Kṛcchra, Cāndrāyaṇa, or other fasts, nor the night vows.
गवाह्निकं च नोदत्तं कोकंडूतिर्न वै कृता
I have not given the cow's daily portion, nor performed the ritual of the crow's call.
नार्थिनः प्रार्थितैरर्थैः कृतार्था हि मया कृताः
I have not fulfilled the requests of those who sought wealth; indeed, I have not made them successful.
न वेदा न च शास्त्राणि नार्धो दारा न नो सुतः
Neither the Vedas nor the śāstras, nor even half a wife or son, belong to me.
शिवशर्मेति संचिंत्य बुद्धिं संधाय सर्वतः
Thinking 'Let me attain Śiva's bliss,' I have firmly resolved my mind in every way.
यावत्स्वस्थोस्ति मे देहो यावन्नेंद्रियविक्लवः
As long as my body remains healthy, as long as my senses are not impaired,
दिनानि पंचपाण्येवमतिवाह्य गृहो द्विजः
Thus, having spent five days in this manner, the twice-born remains at home.
उपोष्य रजनीमेकां प्रातः श्राद्धं विधाय च 4.1.7.
After fasting for a single night, in the morning he performs the śrāddha rite.
इति निश्चित्य निर्वाणपदनिःश्रेणिकां पराम्
Having thus resolved, he attains the supreme ladder to the state of liberation.
अथ पंथानमाक्रम्य कियंतमपि स द्विजः
Then, setting out on the path, however far it may be, that twice-born proceeds.
भुवि तीर्थान्यनेकानि लोलमायुश्चलं मनः
On earth are many sacred places, with a restless lifespan and a fickle mind.
अयोध्यां च पुरीं गत्वा सरयूमवगाह्य च
He goes to the city of Ayodhya and immerses himself in the Sarayu river.
पंचरात्रमुषित्वा तु ब्राह्मणान्परिभोज्य च
After staying for five nights, he feeds the Brahmins.
सिताऽसिते सरिच्छ्रेष्ठे यत्रास्तां सुरदुर्लभे
Where the best of rivers, both white and dark, exist, rare even for the gods.
क्षेत्रं प्रजापतेः पुण्यं सर्वेषामेव दुर्लभम्
There is the sacred field of Prajāpati, difficult for all to attain.
दमयंतीं कलिं कालं कलिंदतनयां शुभाम्
Damayantī, Kali, Kāla, and the auspicious daughter of Kalinda.
प्रकृष्टं सर्वयागेभ्यः प्रयागमिति गीयते
It is celebrated as Prayāga, surpassing all other sacrifices.
यत्र स्थितः स्वयं साक्षाच्छूलटंको महेश्वरः 4.1.7.
Where Maheshvara himself stands, bearing the trident and the mark.
तत्राऽक्षय्यवटोऽप्यस्ति सप्तपातालमूलवान्
There also exists the imperishable banyan tree, whose roots reach the seven netherworlds.
हिरण्यगर्भो विज्ञेयः स साक्षाद्वटरूपधृक्
Hiraṇyagarbha is to be known as directly assuming the form of the banyan tree.
