तपःक्रोधसमुत्थाभ्यां काशीविरहजन्मना
Born from the absence of Kāśī and arising from the force of asceticism and anger,
गिरिः खर्वतरो भूत्वा विविक्षुरवनीमिव
The mountain became diminished in size, as if wishing to enter the earth.
पुनरागमनं चेन्मे तावत्खर्वतरो भव
If he should return again, then become even smaller.
इत्युक्त्वा दक्षिणामाशां सनाथामकरोन्मुनिः
Having spoken thus, the sage made the southern direction his refuge.
गते तस्मिन्मुनिवरे वेपमानस्तदा गिरिः
When that best of sages had departed, the mountain then trembled.
अद्याजातः पुनरहं न शप्तो यदगस्तिना 4.1.5.
Today I am born anew, for I have not been cursed by Agastya.
अरुणोपि च तत्काले कालज्ञो ऽश्वानकालयत्
And at that time, Aruṇa, who knows the proper time, delayed the coming of dawn.
अद्य श्वो वा परश्वो वाप्यागमिप्यति वै मुनिः
Today, tomorrow, or the day after, the sage may indeed return.
नाद्यापि मुनिरायाति नाद्यापिगिरिरेधते
Even now the sage does not come, nor does the mountain regain its former state.
विवर्धिषति यो नीचः परासूयां समुद्वहन्
Whoever, being lowly, harbors envy toward others, will not prosper.
मनोरथा न सिद्ध्येयुः सिद्धा नश्यंत्यपि ध्रुवम्
Their desires will not be fulfilled, and even what is accomplished will surely perish.
विधवानां स्तना यद्वद्धृद्येव विलयंति च
Just as the breasts of widows waste away in their hearts.
भवेत्कूलंकपा यद्वदल्पवर्षेणकन्नदी
Just as a river becomes shallow and loses its banks when there is little rain,
अविज्ञायान्य सामर्थ्यं स्वसामर्थ्यं प्रदर्शयेत
Without knowing the strength of others, one should not display one's own strength.
न तत्याज च तं तापं काशीविरहजं परम्
He did not abandon that intense pain, born from separation from Kāśī.
उदीची दिक्स्पृशमपि स मुनिर्मातरिश्वनम् 4.1.5.
That sage, even as he touched the northern direction, reached the wind-god.
लोपामुद्रे न सा मुद्रा कापीह जगतीतले
Lopāmudrā is not that seal; no monkey is here upon the surface of the earth.
क्वचित्तिष्ठन्क्वचिज्जल्पन्क्वचिद्धावन्क्वचित्स्खलन्
At times standing, at times speaking, at times running, at times stumbling,
ततो व्रजन्ददर्शाग्रे पुण्यराशिस्तपोधनः
Then, as he went, the ascetic rich in austerity, a storehouse of merit, saw ahead.
विजित्यभानु नाभानुं दिवापि समुदित्वराम्
Having conquered the sun and the non-sun, he shone forth even by day.
तत्रागस्त्यो महालक्ष्मीं ददृशे सुचिरं स्थिताम्
There Agastya beheld Mahālakṣmī, who had remained for a long time.
रात्रावब्जेषु संकोचो दर्शेष्वब्जः क्वचिद्व्रजेत्
At night the lotus contracts, but at the sight of the moon, it sometimes opens.
यदारभ्य दधारैनां माधवो मानतः किल
From the time Mādhava took her up, he bore her out of honor, indeed.
त्रैलोक्यं कोलरूपेण त्रासयंतं महासुरम्
He, in the form of a boar, terrified the great demon and the three worlds.
संप्राप्याथ महालक्ष्मीं मुनिवर्यः प्रणम्य च
Then, having reached Mahālakṣmī and bowing, the eminent sage—
अगस्तिरुवाच क्षीरोदजे कमलकोमलगर्भ गौरि लक्ष्मि प्रसीद सततं नमतां शरण्ये ।। 4.1.5.
Agastya said: O you born from the milk ocean, with a womb as soft as a lotus, O fair one, O Lakṣmī, be gracious, refuge of those who always bow.
त्वं श्रीरुपेंद्रसदने मदनैकमातर्ज्योत्स्नासि चंद्रमसि चंद्रमनोहरास्ये। सूर्ये प्रभासि च जगत्त्रितये प्रभासि लक्ष्मि प्रसीद सततं नमतां शरण्ये
You are Śrī in Indra's abode, the sole mother of love, moonlight in the moon, with a face enchanting as the moon; in the sun you are the radiance, and in the three worlds you shine—O Lakṣmī, be gracious, refuge of those who always bow.
त्वं जातवेदसि सदा दह्नात्मशक्तिर्वेधास्त्वया जगदिदं विविधं विदध्यात्
You are always the burning power in fire; by you, the Creator arranges this diverse world.
त्वत्त्यक्तमेतदमले हरते हरोपि त्वं पासि हंसि विदधासि परावरासि
When forsaken by you, O pure one, even Hari is deprived; you protect, you destroy, you create, you are the highest and the lowest.
शूरः स एव स गुणी , बुधः धन्यो मान्यः स एव कुलशील कलाकलापैः
He alone is brave, he alone is virtuous, wise, fortunate, honored—he alone, endowed with family, character, and all arts.
