पर्यंकशायिनी नारी वि धवा पातयेत्पतिम्
A widow who sleeps on a bed causes her husband to fall.
न चांगोद्वर्तनं कार्यं स्त्रिया विधवया क्वचित्
A widow should never apply oil to her body.
तर्पणं प्रत्यहं कार्यं भर्तुः कुशतिलोदकैः 4.1.4.
One should perform daily offerings of water mixed with sacred grass and sesame seeds for the husband.
विष्णोस्तु पूजनं कार्यं पति बुद्ध्या न चान्यथा
Worship of Viṣṇu should be done with the intention that it is for the husband, and not otherwise.
यद्यदिष्टतमं लोके यच्च पत्युः समीहितम्
Whatever is most desired in the world, and whatever is wished for by the husband,
वैशाखे कार्तिके माघे विशेषनियमांश्चरेत्
In the months of Vaiśākha, Kārtika, and Māgha, one should observe special vows.
वैशाखे जलकुंभांश्च कार्तिके घृतदीपकाः
In Vaiśākha, one should offer water pots; in Kārtika, lamps filled with ghee.
प्रपा कार्या च वैशाखे देवे देया गलंतिका
In Vaiśākha, a water station should be established, and garlands should be given to the gods.
सकर्पूरं च तांबूलं पुष्पदानं तथैव च
Also, camphor, betel leaves, and offerings of flowers should be given in the same way.
पानानि च विचित्राणि द्राक्षा रंभा फलानि च
Various kinds of drinks, as well as grapes, plantains, and other fruits, should be offered.
ऊर्जे यवान्नमश्नीयादेकान्नमथवा पुनः
In the month of Ūrja, one should eat barley food, or alternatively, a single meal.
कार्तिके वर्जयेत्तैलं कार्तिके वर्जये न्मधु
In Kārtika, one should avoid oil; in Kārtika, one should also avoid honey.
कार्तिके मौननियमे घंटां चारु प्रदापयेत 4.1.4.
During the vow of silence in Kārtika, a beautiful bell should be given as a gift.
भूमिशय्याव्रते देया शय्या श्लक्ष्णा सतूलिका
When observing the vow of sleeping on the ground, a smooth bed with a mattress should be given.
धान्यत्यागे च तद्धान्यमथवा शालयः स्मृताः
When giving up grains, that grain or rice is to be given as charity.
एकतः सर्वदानानि दीपदानं तथैकतः
On one side are all gifts, and on the other, the gift of a lamp.
किंचिदभ्युदिते सूर्ये माघस्नानं समाचरेत्
When the sun has just risen, one should perform the Māgha bath.
पक्वान्नैर्भो जयेद्विप्रान्यतिनोपि तपस्विनः
With cooked food, one should feed brāhmaṇas, especially ascetics.
घृतपक्वैः समीरचैः शुचिकर्पूरवासितैः
With dishes cooked in ghee, with fragrant breezes, and with pure camphor scents.
शुष्केंधनानां भारांश्च दद्याच्छीतापनुत्तये
Bundles of dry firewood should be given to remove the cold.
मंजिष्ठा रक्तवासांसि तथा तूलवतीं पटीम्
Manjishtha, red garments, and likewise cloth made of cotton.
कंबलानि विचित्राणि निर्वातानि गृहाणि च
Blankets of various kinds, well-aired, and also houses.
घृतकंबलपूजाभिर्महास्नानपुरःसरम् 4.1.4.
With worship using clarified butter and blankets, preceded by great bathing rites.
इदं पातिव्रतं तेजो ब्रह्मतेजो भवान्परम् 4.1.4.
This is the power of chastity; you possess the supreme radiance of Brahman.
साधयिष्यामि वः कार्यं विसर्ज्येति दिवौकसः 4.1.4.
I will accomplish your task; having said this, the gods departed.
वेदव्यास उवाच इमं पतिव्रताध्यायं श्रुत्वा स्त्रीपुरुषोपिवा
Vedavyasa said: Hearing this chapter on chastity, whether woman or man,
पराशर उवाच ततो ध्यानेन विश्वेशमालोक्य स मुनीश्वरः
Parashara said: Then, by meditation, that sage beheld the Lord of the Universe.
अयि पश्य वरारोहे किमेतत्समुपस्थितम्
O slender-waisted one, look—what is this that has appeared?
येन गोत्रभिदा गोत्रा विपक्षा हेलया कृताः
By whom the slayer of the lineage has, with contempt, harmed the opposing clans.
कल्पवृक्षोंऽगणे यस्य कुलिशं यस्य चायुधम्
For whom the wish-fulfilling trees are a multitude, whose weapon is the thunderbolt.
