पुनः पुनर्विश्वनाथं दृष्ट्वा स्तुत्वा प्रणम्य च
Again and again, seeing Viśvanātha, praising and bowing to him,
स्वनाम्ना लिंगमास्थाप्य कुंडं कृत्वा तदग्रतः
He established a liṅga in his own name, making a fire-pit in front of it,
तं दृष्ट्वा दूरतो देवा द्वितीयमिव भास्करम्
Seeing him from afar, the gods regarded him as a second sun.
साक्षात्किंवाडवाग्निर्वा मूर्त्या वै तप्यते तपः 4.1.3.
Is he, in bodily form, the very fire of destruction, or is he truly performing austerity with intense heat?
अथवा सर्व तेजांसि श्रित्वेमां ब्राह्मणीं तनुम्
Or perhaps, having taken on this brāhmaṇa body, he has gathered all the energies,
तपनस्तप्यतेऽत्यर्थं दहनोपि हि दह्यते
The sun is heated to excess, and even fire itself is burned.
यस्याश्रमे ऽत्र दृश्यंते हिंस्रा अपि समंततः
In whose hermitage, even fierce creatures are seen all around,
शुंडादंडेन करटिः सिंहं कंडूयतेऽभयः
Where the elephant, with its trunk, scratches the lion, unafraid.
सूकरः स्तब्धरोमापि विहाय निजयूथकम्
Even a boar, with bristling hair, abandons his own herd.
भूदारोपि न भूदारं तथाकुर्याद्यथाऽन्यतः
Though he is a digger of the earth, he does not dig the earth as he would for another.
क्रोडीकृत्य क्रोडपोतं तरक्षुः क्रीडयत्यहो
A tiger, having seized a boar's piglet, plays with it, indeed, in sport.
चलत्पुच्छोथ पिबति फेनिलेनाननेन वै
With wagging tail, it drinks with its foamy mouth.
यूका संवीक्ष्यवीक्ष्यैव भक्षयेद्दंतकोटिभिः
A louse, after observing and examining, is eaten with the tips of the teeth.
जातिस्वभावमात्सर्यं त्यक्त्वैकत्र रमंति च 4.1.3.
Having abandoned pride in birth, nature, and envy, they delight together in one place.
आखुश्चाखुभुजः कर्णं कंडूयेत चलाननः
A mouse, with moving face, scratches the ear of another mouse.
स्वकंठं घर्षयत्येव केकिकंठे भुजंगमः
A snake rubs its own neck against the neck of a peacock.
वैरं परित्यज्य लुठेदुत्प्लुत्योत्प्लुत्य लीलया
Abandoning enmity, they roll about, leaping and leaping again, in play.
क्षुधांधोपि न गृह्णाति सोपि तस्माद्बिभेति नो
Even blinded by hunger, he does not seize; nor does he fear him.
तद्दृष्टिपातं मुंचन्वै व्याघ्रो दूरं व्रजत्यहो उभे कथयतो ऽन्योन्यं सख्याविवमुदान्विते
The tiger, averting his gaze, indeed goes far away; both speak to each other with joy, like friends.
दृष्ट्वाप्युद्दंडकोदंडं शबरं शंबरोमृगः
Even seeing the hunter with upraised bow, the deer does not flee.
रोहितोऽरण्यमहिषमुद्धर्षति निराकुलः
The red deer fearlessly approaches the wild buffalo in the forest.
हुंडौ च मुंड युद्धाय न सज्जेते जयैषिणौ
In the arena, the bald and the shaven do not engage in battle, though they desire victory.
तृण्वंति तृणगुल्मादीन्श्वापदास्त्वापदास्पदम् 4.1.3.
The beasts of prey graze on grass and thickets, the very place of danger.
यः स्वार्थं मांसपचनं कुरुते पापमोहितः
He who, deluded by sin, cooks flesh for his own sake—
परप्राणैस्तु ये प्राणान्स्वान्पुष्णं ति हि दुर्धियः
Those wicked-minded ones who nourish their own lives with the lives of others—
जातुमांसं न भोक्तव्यं प्राणैः कंठगतैरपि
Flesh that is born should not be eaten, even if life has reached the throat.
वरमेतेश्वापदा वै मैत्रावरुणि सेवया
These calamities, O Maitrāvaruṇi, are preferable through service.
बकोपि पल्वले मत्स्यान्नाश्नात्यग्रेचरानपि
Even a crane in a pond does not eat fish that move in front of it.
एकतः सर्वमांसानि मत्स्यमांसं तथकैतः
On one side are all kinds of flesh, and on the other, fish flesh—thus is the distinction.
श्येनोपि वर्तिकां दृष्ट्वा भवत्येष पराङ्मुखः
Even a hawk, seeing a quail, turns away from it.
