जातु विद्यागमालापैः कदाचिच्चित्रवस्तुभिः
Sometimes with conversations about knowledge and tradition, sometimes with wondrous objects,
पुष्पावचयनैर्जातु कदाचिद्वारिखेलनैः
Sometimes with the gathering of flowers, sometimes with playing in the water,
मैनाकेनार्चितौ जातु मेनया जातु पूजितौ
Sometimes honored by Maināka, sometimes worshipped by Menā,
जातु द्यूतविनोदेन गतिगोष्ठ्या कदाचन 1.3.2.17.
Sometimes with the amusement of dice, sometimes with lively conversations,
द्यूतनिर्जितमाच्छिद्य पत्युरुत्संगतां गतम्
Taking back what was lost in dice, she went to her husband, filled with delight.
इति तौ पितरौ चराचराणां निवसंतौ कनकाचलादिकेषु
Thus those two parents of all moving and unmoving beings dwelt among the golden mountains and others.
पक्वान्नपानैस्सा तत्र पर्य्यतर्पयत प्रजाः
There she satisfied the people with cooked food and drink.
जातु संध्यानुसंधानमुकुलीकृतलोचनम्
Sometimes, with eyes closed in meditation at twilight,
ध्यायते नूनमधुना कापि सौभाग्यशालिनी
Surely now some fortunate woman is meditating.
कथं विज्ञायते पुंसां कुटिला मानसी स्थितिः
How can the crooked state of men's minds be known?
मयि दाक्षिण्यमेवास्य मन्ये मनसि चेद्रहः
If today he has kindness toward me in his heart, I think it is so.
अद्यप्रभृति ते दासस्तपोभिः क्रीत इत्यपि
From today onward, I am your servant, purchased by austerities—so he says.
असमानानुरागेषु नारीणां मूढचेतसाम्
In women of deluded minds, love is not equal or constant.
इति प्रणयरोषेण देव्याः कलुषचेतसः
Thus, through the mingling of affection and anger, the goddess’s mind became troubled.
वाष्पवारिप्लवे तस्या आताम्रे च विलोचने
Her eyes, reddened and awash with tears, were flooded with streams of weeping.
यत्तस्याधीनतिलकं भ्रुवोर्युगमभज्यत 1.3.2.18.
The mark of her tilaka, dependent on her brows, was broken apart.
अंतर्मन्युभरेणास्याः कंपते स्माधरच्छदः
From the weight of her inner anger, her lower lip trembled.
अतीव रज्यमाने तत्पार्वत्या गंडमंडलम्
Parvati’s cheeks were exceedingly flushed with emotion.
अंतर्वेपधुतौ तस्याश्चकंपाते पयोधरौ
Within, her breasts quivered, shaken by inner trembling.
अचिंतयच्च संभूय सौभाग्याभावतो ननु
She thought to herself, surely this is due to my lack of good fortune.
तदैषा क्वापि यास्यामि किमत्रास्त्येकया मम
Now, I will go somewhere else; what is there here for me alone?
निमीलिताक्षिण्येवास्य गंतव्यं निभृतं मया
With her eyes closed, she resolved to depart quietly.
वत्सौ तु वर्धयत्येव गंगेयमतिवत्सला
Yet Ganga, ever affectionate, continues to nurture her sons.
इति निश्चित्य देवस्य पार्श्वादाशु निवृत्त्य सा
Having decided thus, she quickly withdrew from the Lord’s side.
चलावती माल्यवती मालिनी विजया जया
Calavati, Malyavati, Malini, Vijaya, and Jaya—
तत्र सापि गिरीन्पुण्यान्वनानि नगराणि च 1.3.2.18.
There, she wandered through sacred mountains, forests, and cities.
भ्रमंती सह्यपादेषु द्राविडाख्ये सुनीवृति
Roaming at the foot of the Sahya mountains, in the region called Dravida, with good retreat.
दृश्योऽयं नातिदूरेण पुरस्तात्सकलारुणः
Behold, not far ahead, all is radiant and red.
उपत्यकासु चैतस्य दृश्यंते तापसाश्रमाः
In its valleys, the hermitages of ascetics are seen.
गत्वा निरूपयामस्तानिमान्पुण्याश्रमान्वयम्
Let us go and observe these holy hermitages.
