स्वभक्तानां च लोकेषु देवीनां दास्यसे स्थितिम् पिटकास्ताः सुखेनैव शामयिष्यसि पूजनात्
Among the people, you will grant stability to the devotees of the goddesses; those altars you will pacify with ease through worship.
इदं च शृंगमारुह्य पश्य युद्धं यथा भवेत्
Now, ascend this peak and witness how the battle unfolds.
धावंतः कौरवास्त्वस्मान्वयं यामस्त्वमूनिति
The Kauravas are fleeing from us; we are pursuing them, and you are watching them.
बर्बरीकशिरश्चैव गिरिशृंगमवाप्य तत् ततो युद्धं महदभूत्कुरुपांडवसेनयोः ।।1.2.66.
Barbarika's head, having reached the mountain peak, then witnessed the great battle between the armies of the Kurus and the Pandavas.
अष्टादशाहेन हता ये च द्रोणवृषादयः
Within eighteen days, those like Droṇa and Vṛṣa were slain.
युधिष्ठिरो ज्ञातिमध्ये गोविंदं समभाषत
Yudhiṣṭhira, among his kin, addressed Govinda.
त्वयैव नाथेन हरे नमस्ते पुरुषोत्तम
O Hari, O supreme person, salutations to you, our protector.
येन ध्वस्ता धार्तराष्ट्रास्तं निराकृत्य मां नृप
By whom the Dhārtarāṣṭras were destroyed, having dismissed me, O king.
धृष्टद्युम्नं फाल्गुनं च सात्यकिं मां च पांडव
Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Phālguna, Sātyaki, and myself, O Pāṇḍava,
न मया न त्वया पार्थ नान्येनाप्यरयो हताः
Neither by me nor by you, Pārtha, nor by anyone else were the enemies slain.
अहं हि सर्वदाग्रस्थं नरं पश्यामि संयुगे
For I always see a foremost man in battle.
अथ चेदस्ति त्वत्पौत्रमुच्चस्थं वच्मि हंत कः
If your grandson is exalted, then I will speak—tell me, who is it?
उपसृत्य ततो भीमो बर्बरीकमपृच्छत
Then Bhīma approached Barbarīka and questioned him.
सव्यतः पंचवक्त्रः स दक्षिणे चैकवक्त्रतः ।। 1.2.66.
On the left, he had five faces; on the right, only one face.
सव्यतो दशहस्तश्च धृतशूलाद्युदायुधः
On the left, he had ten arms, holding spears and other weapons.
सव्यतश्च जटाधारी दक्षिणे मुकुटोच्चयः
On the left, he wore matted locks; on the right, a tall crown.
सव्यतश्चंद्रधारी च दक्षिणे कौस्तुभद्युतिः
On the left, he bore a crescent; on the right, the radiance of the Kaustubha gem.
ईदृशो मे नरो दृष्टो न चान्यो यो जघान तान्
Such a man I have seen; there is no other who slew them.
सस्वनुर्देववाद्यानि साधुसाध्विति वै जगुः
The divine instruments resounded, and voices sang, 'Excellent, excellent!'
विलक्षश्चाभवद्भीमो निश्वासांश्चाप्यमुंचत
Bhīma became bewildered and released deep breaths.
कुरुशार्दूल एहीति प्रोच्य सस्मार काश्यपिम्
O tiger among Kurus, come here! Saying this, he remembered Kāśyapa.
भीमेन सहितो व्योम्नि प्रयातो दक्षिणां दिशम्
Together with Bhīma, he went through the sky toward the southern direction.
लंकासमीपे दृष्ट्वैव सरः कृष्णोऽब्रवीद्वचः
Seeing a lake near Laṅkā, Kṛṣṇa spoke these words:
यदि शूरोऽसि तच्छीघ्रमानयास्यतलान्मृदम् 1.2.66.
If you are a hero, then quickly bring clay from the bottom of this lake.
योजनं वायुजवाद्गच्छन्नधो नांतमपश्यत
Traveling a yojana with the speed of the wind, he could not see the bottom.
अगाधमेतत्सुमहत्सरः कैश्चिन्महाबलैः
This great lake is unfathomable, even by some with immense strength.
स्वेनांगुष्ठेन तेजस्वी तदर्धार्धमजायत
With his own thumb, the radiant one produced half of that half.
तदृष्ट्वा विस्मितः प्राह किमिदं कृष्ण ब्रूहि मे
Seeing that, astonished, he said: 'What is this, Krishna? Tell me.'
कुम्भकर्ण इति ख्यातः पूर्वमासीन्निशाचरः
He was formerly known as Kumbhakarna, the night-wandering demon.
शिरसस्तस्य तालुक्यखंडमेतद्वृकोदर
