भीमस्य चापि पौत्रेण दृढं संतोषिताऽस्मि च
And I am truly satisfied by the grandson of Bhīma as well.
व्रजध्वं चापि तीर्थानि यानि वो न कृतानि च
Go now to those sacred places which you have not yet visited.
आपृच्छे चापि वः सर्वान्यूयं कृष्णसमा मम
I take leave of you all, who are equal to Kṛṣṇa in my eyes.
पुनःपुनः प्रणम्यैनां नापश्यन्दीपवद्गताम् ।। 1.2.65.
Again and again, bowing to her, I do not see her as one who has departed like a lamp gone out.
ततस्ते बर्बरीकं च संस्थाप्यात्रैव निष्ठितम्
Then they established Barbarīka here, to remain in this very place.
उपप्लवे संगतेषु सर्वराजसु पांडवाः
When all the kings had gathered at Upaplava, the Pāṇḍavas—
योद्धुमागत्य संतस्थुः कुरुक्षेत्रं महारथाः
—came to fight and stood firm at Kurukṣetra, those great chariot-warriors.
ततो भीष्मेण प्रोक्तां च नरैः श्रुत्वा युधिष्ठिरः
Then, having heard what was spoken by Bhīṣma and by the men, Yudhiṣṭhira—
भीष्मेण विहिता कृष्ण रथातिरथवर्णना
—heard from Bhīṣma the description of the foremost chariot-warriors, as ordained by Kṛṣṇa.
ससैन्यान्पांडवानेतान्हन्यात्कालेन केन कः
Who, by fate, will destroy the Pāṇḍavas and their armies, and by whom, and when?
पक्षं द्रोणेन चाह्नां च दशभिर्द्रौणिना रणे
Droṇa will destroy a division in ten days, and Drauni in battle likewise.
तदहं स्वांश्च पृच्छामि केन कालेन हंति कः
Therefore I ask about my own side as well: by whom, and at what time, will they be slain?
अयुक्तमेतद्भीष्माद्यैः प्रतिज्ञातं युधिष्ठिर
This, O Yudhiṣṭhira, which was promised by Bhīṣma and the others, is not appropriate.
तवापि ये संति नृपाः सन्नद्धा रणसंस्थिताः
And the kings who are with you, armed and standing ready for battle—
द्रुपदं च विराटं च धृष्टकेतुं च कैकयम् 1.2.66.
—Drupada, Virāṭa, Dhṛṣṭaketu, and the king of the Kaikeyas—
धृष्टद्युम्नं सपुत्रं च महावीर्यं घटोत्कचम्
—Dhṛṣṭadyumna and his son, and the mighty Ghaṭotkaca—
मन्येहमेकस्त्वेतेषां हन्यात्कौरववाहिनीम्
I think that even one among these could destroy the Kaurava army.
तेभ्यो भयं न कार्यं ते फल्गवोऽमी मृगा इव
There is no need to fear them; these Phalguvas are like deer.
अस्माकं धनुषां घोषैरिदानीमेव भारत
Now, O Bhārata, by the sounds of our bows—
वृद्धाद्भीष्माद्द्विजाद्वृद्धाद्द्रोणादपि कृपादपि
—from the aged Bhīṣma, from the venerable Droṇa, and even from Kṛpa—
अथवा चित्तनिर्वृत्यै ज्ञातुमिच्छसि भारत
Or, O Bhārata, if you wish to know for the satisfaction of your mind—
एकोऽहमेव संग्रामे सर्वे तिष्ठंतु ते रथाः
Let me alone in battle; let all your chariots stand aside.
इत्यर्जुनवचः श्रुत्वा स्मयन्दामोदरोऽब्रवीत्
Hearing these words of Arjuna, Dāmodara smiled and spoke.
ततश्च शंखान्भेरीश्च शतशश्चैव पुष्करान्
Then conches and drums and hundreds of kettledrums were sounded.
येन तप्तं गुप्तक्षेत्रे येन देव्यः सुतोषिताः 1.2.66.
By whom the secret field was scorched, by whom the goddesses were pleased—
यद्ब्रवीमि वचः सत्यं शृणुध्वं तन्नराधिपाः
What I say is true—listen to it, O kings of men.
यदार्येण प्रतिज्ञातमर्जुनेन महात्मना
What was vowed by the noble Arjuna, the great-souled one—
सर्वे भवंतस्तिष्ठंतु सार्जुनाः सहकेशवाः
Let all remain, with Arjuna and Keśava among them.
मयि तिष्ठति केनापि शस्त्रग्राह्यं न क्षत्रियैः
While I stand here, no Kṣatriya should take up weapons.
पश्यध्वं मे बलं बाह्वोर्देव्याराधनसंभवम्
Behold the strength of my arms, born from the worship of the goddess.
