ततस्तथैव संतस्थौ बर्बरीकोऽभिरक्षणे
Then, in the same manner, Barbarika stood firm, guarding vigilantly.
मुंडी नग्नो मयूराणां पिच्छधारी महाव्रतः
Shaven-headed, naked, adorned with peacock feathers, observing great vows.
अहिंसा परमो धर्मस्तदग्निर्ज्वाल्यते कुतः
Nonviolence is the supreme dharma; why then is this fire kindled?
श्रुत्वेदं वचनं तस्य बर्बरीकोऽब्रवीत्स्मयन्
Hearing these words, Barbarika replied with a smile.
अनृतं भाषसे पाप शिक्षायोग्योऽसि दुर्मते
You speak falsehood, sinner; you are fit for discipline, O wicked-minded one.
दन्तान्मुष्टिप्रहारैश्च समाहत्याभ्यपातयत् 1.2.63.
He struck their teeth with blows of his fist and knocked them down.
स क्षणाच्चेतनां प्राप्य घोरदैत्यवपुर्धरः
In a moment, regaining consciousness, he took on the form of a fierce demon.
बहुप्रभेति नगरी षष्टियोजनमायता
A city called Bahuprabha, spanning sixty yojanas in length.
बर्बरीकं ततो दृष्ट्वा नादोऽभूच्च पलाशिनाम्
Seeing Barbarika, a cry arose among the Palash trees.
तच्छ्रुत्वा दैत्यवीराणां कोटयो नव भीषणाः
Hearing this, ninety million terrifying demon warriors gathered.
दृष्ट्वा तान्कोटिशो दैत्यान्क्रुद्धो भीमात्मजात्मजः
Seeing those millions of demons, the son of Bhima's son grew enraged.
पादघातैस्ततः कांश्चिद्भुजाघातैस्तथापरान्
With blows from his feet he struck some, and with blows from his arms he struck others.
यथा नलवनं क्र्रुद्धः कुर्याद्भूमिसमं करी
As an angry elephant would level a reed forest to the ground.
ततो नागाः समागम्य वासुकिप्रमुखास्तदा
Then, the serpents led by Vasuki assembled together.
नागानां परमं कृत्यं कृतं ते भैमिनंदन
O son of Bhīma, the foremost duty of the nāgas has been accomplished by you.
अनेन हि वयं वीर सानुगेन दुरात्मना 1.2.63.
For by this, O hero, we and our followers have been delivered from the wicked one.
वरं वृणीष्व त्वं तस्मान्नागेभ्योऽभिमतं परम्
Therefore, choose a boon from the nāgas, whatever supreme desire you may have.
सर्वविघ्नविनिर्मुक्तो विजयः सिद्धिमाप्नुयात्
May victory, free from all obstacles, and attainment of success be yours.
ततस्तथेति तं प्रोचुः प्रहृष्टा वायुभोजनाः
Then, delighted, those who subsist on air replied to him, saying, 'So be it.'
विवरस्य च मध्येन समागच्छन्महाप्रभम्
Passing through the center of the cavern, they approached the one of great brilliance.
अर्च्यमानं सुवह्नीभिर्नागकन्याभिरैक्षत
He was seen being worshipped with excellent offerings by the nāga maidens.
केनेदं स्थापितं लिंगं सूर्यवैश्वानरप्रभम्
By whom was this liṅga, radiant like the sun and fire, established here?
इति वीरवचः श्रुत्वा बृहत्कटिपयोधरा
Hearing these words of the hero, the one with broad hips and large breasts,
सर्वपन्नगराजेन शेषेण सुमहात्मना
By the king of all serpents, Śeṣa, of great soul,
दर्शनात्स्पर्शनाद्ध्यानादर्चनात्सर्वसिद्धिदम्
By seeing, touching, meditating upon, and worshipping it, all attainments are granted.
एलापत्रेण विहितो नागानां तत्र प्राप्तये 1.2.63.
It was established by Elāpatra for the nāgas to obtain it there.
कर्कोटकेन नागेन कृतोऽयं तत्र प्राप्तये
This was made by the nāga Karkoṭaka for their attainment there.
ऐरावतेन विहितो नागानां गमनाय च
It was established by Airāvata for the nāgas to come there.
गुप्तक्षेत्रे सिद्धलिंगं याति शक्तिगुहाऽऽकृतः
In the protected field, the siddha-liṅga goes to the cave of Śakti, having been made.
इतीदं वर्णितं वीर विज्ञप्तिः श्रूयतां मम अधुनैव तथैकाकी समायातोऽत्र नो वद
Thus this has been described, O hero; hear my message now. Having come here alone, tell us.
