इति हैडंबिवचनं श्रुत्वा कामकटंकटा
Hearing these words of Hidimba, burning with desire,
धिगहं यन्मया पूर्वं समयः स कृतोऽभवत्
Fie upon me, that I once made that agreement!
इति संचिन्तयन्ती सा भैमिं वचनमब्रवीत्
Thinking thus, she spoke these words to Bhima.
अथ कामयसे मां त्वं तत्कथां शीघ्रमुच्चर ततोऽहं वशगा जाता हतो वा स्वप्स्यसे मया
If you desire me, then quickly tell that story; then I will become subject to you, or you will sleep, slain by me.
स्मृत्वा चराचरगुरुं कृष्णमारब्धवान्कथाम्
Remembering Krishna, the guru of all moving and unmoving beings, he began the tale.
तस्य चैका सुता जज्ञे भार्या तस्य मृताऽभवत् 1.2.60.
And to him a single daughter was born; his wife had died.
सा यदाभूद्यौवनगा व्यंजितावयवा शुभा
When she came of age, her limbs manifest and beautiful,
तदास्य कामलुलितमालानं प्रजहौ मनः
Then his mind abandoned garlands wilted by desire.
प्रातिवेश्मकपुत्री त्वं मयानीयात्र पोषिता
You are the daughter of a neighbor, brought here and raised by me.
इत्युक्ता सा च मेने च तत्तथैव वचस्तदा
Thus addressed, she then accepted those words as true.
ततस्तस्यां सुता जज्ञे तस्मान्मदनरासभात् एनं प्रश्नं मम ब्रूहि शीघ्रं चेच्छक्तिरस्ति ते
Then a daughter was born to her from that ass of love; now answer my question quickly, if you have the power.
न च पश्यति निर्द्धारं प्रश्नस्यास्य कथंचन
But he could in no way see the solution to this question.
अताडयद्रुक्मरज्जुं कराभ्यां दोलकस्य च
He struck the golden rope and the swing with his hands.
सिंहव्याघ्रवराहाश्च महिषाश्चित्रका मृगाः
Lions, tigers, boars, buffaloes, and spotted deer,
अवादयन्नखौ भैमिः कनिष्ठांगुष्ठजौ हसन् 1.2.60.
Bhima, laughing, played with his fingernails and little finger and thumb.
तैर्मौर्वीनिर्मिताः सर्वे क्षणादेव स्म भक्षिताः
All those made of bowstring fiber were devoured in an instant.
उत्थाय सहसा दोलात्खड्गमादातुमैच्छत
Rising up suddenly from the swing, she wished to seize the sword.
केशेष्वादाय सव्येन पाणिनाऽपातयद्भुवि
Grabbing her by the hair with his left hand, he threw her down to the ground.
दक्षिणेन करेणास्याश्छेत्तुमैच्छत नासिकाम्
With his right hand, he wanted to cut off her nose.
प्रश्नेन शक्त्या च बलेन नाथ त्रिधा त्वयाहं विजिता नमस्ते
By questioning, by power, and by force, O Lord, I have been conquered by you in three ways—salutations to you.
एवमुक्त्वा मुमोचैनां मुक्ता चाह प्रणम्य सा
Having spoken thus, he released her, and she, freed, bowed and spoke.
जानामि त्वां महाबाहो वीरं शक्तिमतां वरम्
I know you, O mighty-armed one, as a hero, the best among the powerful.
गुह्यकाधिपतिस्त्वं हि कालनाभ इति स्मृतः
You are indeed the lord of the Guhyakas, known as Kālanābha.
इति मां प्राह कामाख्या सर्वं तत्संस्मराम्यहम्
Thus Kāmākhyā spoke to me; I remember all of that.
समादिश प्राणनाथ कमादेशं करोमि ते घटोत्कच उवाच प्रच्छन्नस्तस्य घटते न विवाहः कथंचन ।। 1.2.60.
Command me, O lord of my life, I will carry out your wish. Ghaṭotkaca said: If it is concealed, that marriage will never take place.
मोर्वि यस्य हि वर्तंते पितरौ बांधवास्तथा
Morvi, whose parents and relatives are still living—
अयं कुलक्रमोऽस्माकं यद्भार्या पतिमुद्वहेत्
This is our family custom: that a wife should be given to a husband.
भगदत्तमथो नाथं ततो मौर्वी न्यवेदयत्
Then she informed her lord Bhagadatta about Maurvi.
ततः पृष्ठिं समारोप्य घटोत्कचमनिंदिता
Then, placing Ghaṭotkaca on her back, she was not reproached.
ततोऽसौ वासुदेवेन पांडवैश्चाभिनंदितः
Then he was honored by Vāsudeva and the Pāṇḍavas.
