तदासाद्य स हैडंबिर्मेरोः शिखरवद्ग्रहम्
Then he approached her, seizing her as one would grasp the peak of Mount Meru.
तामाह ललितं वीरो भद्रे सा क्व मुरोः सुता
The hero spoke gently to her: 'O blessed one, where is that daughter of Mura?'
कोटिशो निहताः पूर्वं तया कामुक कामुकाः
Millions of lovers have previously been slain by her, O lover.
तव रूपमहं दृष्ट्वा घटहासं सदोत्कचम्
Having seen your beauty, O Ghaṭahāsa, my hair stands on end.
तन्मया सह मोदस्व भुंक्ष्व भोगांश्च कामुक
Therefore, rejoice with me and enjoy pleasures, O lover.
पुनर्नैतद्वचस्तुभ्यं विशते मम चेतसि
Yet, this word of yours does not again enter my mind.
वामः कामो यतो भद्रे यस्मिन्नुपनिबद्ध्यते 1.2.60.
Desire is fickle, O blessed one, for it attaches itself to whatever it encounters.
अद्य ते स्वामिनी दृष्टा जिता वा क्रीडते मया
Today your mistress has been seen, or conquered, or is sporting with me.
कर्णप्रावरणे तस्माच्छीघ्रमेव निवेद्यताम्
Therefore, let this be quickly conveyed as a secret in her ear.
इति भैमेर्वचः श्रुत्वा प्रस्खलंती निशाचरी
Hearing these words of Bhaimī, the night-wanderer stumbled.
देवि कोऽपि युवा श्रीमांस्त्रैलोक्येष्वमितप्रभः
'Goddess, some youthful, illustrious man of immeasurable splendor in the three worlds—'
कदाचिद्देवसंगत्या समयो मेऽभिपूर्यते
'Perhaps, by association with the gods, my time will be fulfilled.'
इत्युक्तवचनाच्चेटी प्राप्यावोचद्घटोत्कचम्
Having heard these words, the maidservant went and spoke to Ghaṭotkaca.
इत्युक्तः स प्रहस्यैव तत्रोत्सृज्य स्वकानुगान्
Thus addressed, he laughed, and thereupon left behind his attendants.
स पश्यञ्छुकसंघातान्पारावतगणांस्तथा
He saw flocks of parrots and groups of pigeons as well.
रूपेण वयसः चैव रतेरपि रतिंकरीम्
In beauty, in youth, and even in passion, she surpassed the goddess of love.
तां विद्युतमिवोन्नद्धां दृष्ट्वा भैमिरचिंतयत 1.2.60.
Seeing her, radiant like lightning, Bhaimī reflected.
न्याय्यमेतत्कृते पूर्वं नष्टा यत्कामिनां गणाः
It is just that, because of her, the hosts of lovers were previously destroyed.
कामिनीनां कृते येषां क्षीयते गणनात्र का
For the sake of women, whose count can be made here?
निष्ठुरे वज्रहृदये प्राप्तोऽहमतिथिस्तव
I, your guest, have come to you, O cruel one with a heart of stone.
इति हैडंबिवचनं श्रुत्वा कामकटंकटा
Hearing these words of Hidimba, burning with desire,
धिगहं यन्मया पूर्वं समयः स कृतोऽभवत्
Fie upon me, that I once made that agreement!
इति संचिन्तयन्ती सा भैमिं वचनमब्रवीत्
Thinking thus, she spoke these words to Bhima.
अथ कामयसे मां त्वं तत्कथां शीघ्रमुच्चर ततोऽहं वशगा जाता हतो वा स्वप्स्यसे मया
If you desire me, then quickly tell that story; then I will become subject to you, or you will sleep, slain by me.
स्मृत्वा चराचरगुरुं कृष्णमारब्धवान्कथाम्
Remembering Krishna, the guru of all moving and unmoving beings, he began the tale.
तस्य चैका सुता जज्ञे भार्या तस्य मृताऽभवत् 1.2.60.
And to him a single daughter was born; his wife had died.
सा यदाभूद्यौवनगा व्यंजितावयवा शुभा
When she came of age, her limbs manifest and beautiful,
तदास्य कामलुलितमालानं प्रजहौ मनः
Then his mind abandoned garlands wilted by desire.
प्रातिवेश्मकपुत्री त्वं मयानीयात्र पोषिता
You are the daughter of a neighbor, brought here and raised by me.
इत्युक्ता सा च मेने च तत्तथैव वचस्तदा
Thus addressed, she then accepted those words as true.
