राज्ञा पुनः स्नेहवशाद्यदुक्तं तन्न भाति मे
Yet, what the king said out of affection does not please me.
कार्ये दुःसाध्य एव स्यात्क्षत्रियस्य पराक्रमः
In a difficult task, the valor of a Kshatriya is indeed tested.
आत्मा प्रख्यातिमानेयः सर्वथा वीरपुंगवैः 1.2.59.
The self must always be made renowned by the foremost of heroes.
न ह्यात्मवशगं पार्थ हैडंबेरस्य रक्षणम्
For, O Pārtha, the protection of Hidimba's son is not within one's own power.
सर्वथोच्चपदारोहे यत्नः कार्यो विजानता
In every way, one who understands should strive for the highest position.
यथा देवव्रतस्त्वेको जह्रे काशिसुताः पुरा
Just as, in former times, Devavrata alone seized the daughters of Kāśī.
अबलं दैवहेतुत्वात्प्रबलं प्रतिभाति मे
Due to the force of fate, the weak appears strong to me.
न मृषा हि वचो ब्रूते कामाख्या या पुराऽब्रवीत्
For the words once spoken by Kāmākhyā are truly not false.
अनेन हेतुना यातु शीघ्रं तत्र घटोत्कचः
For this reason, let Ghaṭotkaca go there swiftly.
न हि तुल्यो भैमसेनेर्बुद्धौ वीर्ये च कश्चन
Indeed, no one is equal to Bhīmasena's son in intellect or in might.
अंतरात्मा च मे वेत्ति प्राप्तामेव मुरोः सुताम्
And my inner self knows that the daughter of Mura has already been attained.
प्रवृत्ता एव भासंते सद्गुणाश्च रवेः कराः
Just as the rays of the sun shine forth, so too do noble qualities naturally manifest.
सर्वथा तत्करिष्यामि पितरो येन मेऽमलाः 1.2.59.
In every way, I shall do that by which my ancestors remain unstained.
एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहुरुत्थाय प्रणनाम तान्
Having spoken thus, the mighty-armed one rose and bowed to them.
तं गतुकाममाहेदमभिनंद्य जनार्दनः
As he prepared to depart, Janārdana addressed him with praise.
यथा बुद्धिं सुदुर्भेद्यां वर्धयामि बलं च ते
I shall increase your strength and make your resolve, which is hard to break, even firmer.
ततो हिडंबातनयो महौजाः सूर्याक्षकालाक्षमहोदरानुगः
Then the mighty son of Hiḍimba, accompanied by Sūryākṣa, Kālākṣa, and Mahodara, set out.
सहस्रभूमिकं गेहमपश्यत हिरण्मयम्
He beheld a golden mansion with a thousand floors.
वेणुवीणामृदंगानां निःस्वनैः परिपूरितम्
It was filled with the sounds of flutes, vīṇās, and mṛdaṅgas.
आयाद्भिः प्रतियाद्भिश्च भगदत्तस्य किंकरैः
With the attendants of Bhagadatta coming and going.
तदासाद्य स हैडंबिर्मेरोः शिखरवद्ग्रहम्
Then he approached her, seizing her as one would grasp the peak of Mount Meru.
तामाह ललितं वीरो भद्रे सा क्व मुरोः सुता
The hero spoke gently to her: 'O blessed one, where is that daughter of Mura?'
कोटिशो निहताः पूर्वं तया कामुक कामुकाः
Millions of lovers have previously been slain by her, O lover.
तव रूपमहं दृष्ट्वा घटहासं सदोत्कचम्
Having seen your beauty, O Ghaṭahāsa, my hair stands on end.
तन्मया सह मोदस्व भुंक्ष्व भोगांश्च कामुक
Therefore, rejoice with me and enjoy pleasures, O lover.
पुनर्नैतद्वचस्तुभ्यं विशते मम चेतसि
Yet, this word of yours does not again enter my mind.
वामः कामो यतो भद्रे यस्मिन्नुपनिबद्ध्यते 1.2.60.
Desire is fickle, O blessed one, for it attaches itself to whatever it encounters.
अद्य ते स्वामिनी दृष्टा जिता वा क्रीडते मया
Today your mistress has been seen, or conquered, or is sporting with me.
कर्णप्रावरणे तस्माच्छीघ्रमेव निवेद्यताम्
Therefore, let this be quickly conveyed as a secret in her ear.
इति भैमेर्वचः श्रुत्वा प्रस्खलंती निशाचरी
Hearing these words of Bhaimī, the night-wanderer stumbled.
