तथैवं सात्म्यमभ्येति योगिनामात्मा परात्मना
In this way, the self of yogis attains union with the Supreme Self.
अत्रोपमां व्याहरंति योगार्थं योगिनोऽ मलाः
Here, the pure yogis speak an analogy for the sake of yoga.
समुत्सृजति नैकः सन्नुपमा सास्ति योगिनः
When one, though existing as many, abandons all, that is the analogy for the yogi.
ध्वस्ते यांत्यन्यतो दुःखं न तेषां सोपमा यतेः
When suffering is destroyed and they go elsewhere, there is no analogy for the striving yogi.
करोति मृद्भागचयमुपदेशः स योगिनः
Just as one makes a heap of clay, so is the instruction for the yogi.
वृक्षं विलुप्यमानं च लब्ध्वा सिध्यंति योगिनः
Having obtained a tree being uprooted, yogis achieve success.
सह तेन विवर्धेत योगी सिद्धिमुपाश्नुते
Together with that, the yogi grows and attains perfection.
तुंगमार्गं विलोक्यैवं विज्ञातं कि न योगिनाम् 1.2.55.
Having seen the lofty path in this way, what is not known to yogis?
येन निष्पाद्यते चार्थः स्वयं स्याद्योगसिद्धये
By which the purpose is accomplished, that alone is for the attainment of yoga.
ज्ञानानां बहुता येयं योगविघ्नकरी हि सा
This abundance of knowledge is indeed an obstacle to yoga.
अपि कल्पसहस्रायुर्नैव ज्ञेयमवाप्नुयात्
Even in a thousand ages of the world, one would not attain what is to be known.
पिधाय बुद्ध्या द्वाराणि मनो ध्याने निवेशयेत्
Closing the doors with the intellect, one should fix the mind in meditation.
स्यादयं तं च भुंजानो रौरवस्य प्रियातिथिः
He who partakes of this, becoming the honored guest of Raurava.
यस्यैते नियता दंडाः स त्रिदंडी यतिः स्मृतः
He in whom these restraints are firmly established is known as a tridaṇḍī ascetic.
न बिभ्यति च सत्त्वानि सिद्धेर्लक्षणमुच्यते
Beings do not fear him—this is said to be the mark of accomplishment.
अलौल्यमारोग्यमनिष्ठुरत्वं गंधः शुभो मूत्रपुरीषयोश्च
Freedom from greed, good health, gentleness, and a pleasant scent in urine and feces—
समाहितो ब्रह्मपरोऽप्रमादी शुचिस्तथैकांतरतिर्जितेन्द्रियः
Collected, devoted to Brahman, vigilant, pure, with inward delight, and master of the senses—
कुलं पवित्रं जननी कृतार्था वसुन्धरा भाग्यवती च तेन 1.2.55.
By him, the family is purified, the mother fulfilled, the earth herself becomes fortunate.
विशुद्धबुद्धिः समलोष्टकांचनः समस्तभूतेषु वसन्समो हि यः
He whose mind is pure, who regards clods and gold alike, who dwells equally among all beings—
इदं मया योगरहस्यमुक्तमेवंविधं गौतमः प्राप योगम्
This secret of yoga has been declared by me; thus Gautama attained yoga.
यश्चाश्विने कृष्णचतुर्दशीदिने रात्रौ समभ्यर्चति लिंगमेतन्
And whoever, on the night of the dark fourteenth, worships this liṅga—
महोपकारेण विमुक्तपापः स याति यत्रास्ति स गौतमो मुनिः
Freed from great sin by this great act, he goes to where that sage Gautama is.
इदं मया पार्थ तव प्रणीतं गुप्तस्य क्षेत्रस्य समासयोगात्
This has been set forth by me for you, Pārtha, in brief, concerning the secret field.
य इदं शृणुयाद्भक्त्या गौतमाख्यानमुत्तमम्
Whoever listens with devotion to this excellent account of Gautama—
यस्य स्मरणमात्रेण वाजपेयफलं भवेत्
By merely remembering him, one obtains the fruit of a Vājapeya sacrifice.
एकदा तु पुरा पार्थ सृष्टि कामेन ब्रह्मणा
Once, O Pārtha, long ago, when Brahmā desired creation—
तपसा तेन सन्तुष्टः पार्वतीपतिशंकरः
By his austerity, Lord Śaṅkara, husband of Pārvatī, was pleased.
ततो हृष्टः प्रमुदितः कृतकृत्यः पितामहः
Then, delighted, joyful, and his purpose accomplished, the Grandfather—
चखान च सरः पुण्यं नाम्ना ब्रह्मसरः शुभम
He dug a holy lake, auspicious and named Brahmasara.
अस्य तीरे महालिंगं स्थापयामास वै विभुः
On its bank, the Lord established a great liṅga.
