Because of the restraint of the breaths, it is remembered as prāṇāyāma.
Thus, the defect caused by the senses is burned away by prāṇāyāma.
Therefore, the knower of yoga should always restrain the breath by prāṇāyāma.
Peace, tranquility, radiance, and clarity arise in succession.
The first quality that arises is called the cessation of desires.
When the attainment of austerities occurs, that is called peace.
This is called clarity; thus, these four are to be attained.
Gentleness is cultivated in lions, tigers, and elephants.
This prāṇāyāma has been explained; now listen to pratyāhāra.
Pratyāhāra is defined as the restraint of the senses.
Just as one seeking water draws it slowly through leaves, stems, and so on,
With the foreparts, the wind is brought into the heart, then to the palate, and between the brows.
By contraction alone, gently raise the breath upward to the crown.
This is declared to be ten prāṇāyāmas and two retentions.
Now hear the characteristic of the object of meditation for one established in retention.
Some meditate on Śiva, some on Hari, others on the Sun, and others on Brahmā.
There, whatever one meditates upon, into that indeed one dissolves.
Seated in the lotus posture, radiant, holding the gesture of the seed, established.
This has been declared as your object of meditation; therefore, one should practice meditation.
He who is established in retention does not become separate from the object of meditation.
Afterwards, one should think of nothing; this is called samādhi.
Devoid of sound, touch, and taste, and free from smell and form.
Having attained that, a man is never overcome by obstacles.
Even if hundreds of conches and the like are sounded at his ears,
Or if struck by whips, or if his body is burned by fire,
What then can be said of external forms, smells, or tastes for such a one?
Neither thirst nor hunger ever afflict him.
Such happiness is found nowhere—in heaven, nor in the netherworld, nor among humans.
In this way, for one who has ascended to yoga, O son of the Kurus,
There arise intuitive, auditory, divine, whirling, and terrifying experiences.
