येषां त्वंतगतं पापं स्वर्गाद्वा ये समागताः
Those whose sin has come to an end, or who have come from heaven.
भवंति चात्र श्लोकाः तस्माद्धर्मं सुखार्थाय कुर्यात्पापं विवर्जयेत्
There are also verses on this: Therefore, for the sake of happiness, one should practice dharma and avoid sin.
लोकद्वयेऽपि यत्सौख्यं तद्धर्मात्प्रोच्यते यतः
For the happiness in both worlds is said to arise from dharma.
मुहूर्तमपि जीवेत नरः शुक्लेन कर्मणा
Even for a moment, a man should live by righteous action.
इति पृष्टं त्वया विप्र यथाशक्त्या मयेरितम् 1.2.51.
Thus, O brahmin, as you have asked, I have declared to the best of my ability.
भगवान्भास्करः प्रीतो बभूवातीव विस्मितः
The blessed Sun, greatly pleased, became exceedingly astonished.
प्रशशंस च तान्विप्रान्हारीतप्रमुखांस्तदा
He praised those brahmins, headed by Harita, at that time.
अथ प्रजापतिर्धन्यो यन्मर्यादाभिपाल्यते
Then the Prajapati is blessed, since the boundaries are maintained.
येषां मध्ये बालबुद्धिरियमेतादृशी स्फुटा
Among whom this childlike intellect has arisen so clearly,
असंशयं त्रिलोकस्थमेषामविदितं न हि
Undoubtedly, for them, nothing in the three worlds remains unknown.
इति प्रशस्य तान्विप्रान्प्रहृष्टो रविरव्रवीत्
Thus praising those brahmins, the delighted Sun spoke aloud:
समागतः सूर्यलोकात्प्राप्तं नेत्रफलं च मे
I have come from the world of the Sun, and I have regained the sight of my eye.
अंत्यजा अपि पूयन्ते किं पुनर्मादृशा द्विजाः
Even outcastes are purified—how much more so brahmins like me!
युष्माभिर्बध्यते श्रेयो यस्य वै धूतकिल्विषैः तपो विद्या च वृत्तं च यतो वार्द्धक्यकारणम्
By you, the highest good is bound for him whose sins are washed away—through asceticism, knowledge, and conduct, which are causes of old age.
वरं मत्तो वृणीध्वं च दुर्लभं यं हृदीच्छत 1.2.51.
Choose from me a boon—something rare, whatever your heart desires.
देवतानां हि संसर्गो निष्फलो नोपजायते
For association with the gods never becomes fruitless.
संपूज्य परया भक्त्या पाद्यार्घ्यस्तुतिवंदनैः
They worshipped him with supreme devotion, with water for the feet, offerings, hymns, and salutations.
जयादित्य जय स्वामिञ्जय भानो जयामल
Victory to you, Aditya! Victory, Lord! Victory, Radiant One! Victory, Stainless One!
विप्राणां त्वं परो देवो विप्रसर्गोऽपि त्वन्मयः
You are the supreme deity of the brahmins; even the creation of brahmins is pervaded by you.
अद्य नः सफला वेदा अद्य नः सफलाः क्रियाः
Today our Vedas are fruitful; today our rites are fruitful.
वरं यदि प्रदातासि तदेनं प्रवृणीमहे
If you are indeed the giver of boons, then we choose this one.
जयादित्य इति ख्यातस्तस्मात्स्थास्येऽत्र सर्वदा
Because I am known as Jayaditya, therefore I shall always remain here.
यावन्मही समुद्राश्च पर्वता नगराणि च
As long as the earth, the oceans, the mountains, and the cities exist,
दारिद्र्यरोगसंघातान्दद्रवो मंडलानि च 1.2.51.
Poverty, diseases, and all afflictions, as well as planetary influences,
यो मामत्र स्थितं चापि पूजयिष्यति मानवः
Whoever among men worships me established here,
मूर्तिं संस्थापयामासुर्वेदोदितविधानतः
They installed the image according to the procedure prescribed in the Vedas.
ततो द्विजाः प्राहुरेवं कमठं त्वत्कृते रविः
Then the brahmins said thus to Kamaṭha: 'The Sun acts for your sake.'
इत्युक्तो ब्राह्मणैः सर्वैः कमठो वाग्ग्मिनां वरः । प्रणिपत्य जयादित्यं महास्तोत्रमिदं जगौ
Thus addressed by all the brahmins, Kamaṭha, foremost among speakers, bowed to the victorious Sun and sang this great hymn.
न त्वं कृतः केवलसंश्रुतश्च यजुष्येवं व्याहरत्यादिदेव
You are not merely created or only heard of; just as the Yajus declares, you are the primordial god.
मार्तंडसूर्यांशुरविस्तथेन्द्रो भानुर्भगश्चार्यमा स्वर्णरेताः
You are Mārtaṇḍa, Sūrya, the ray of the Sun, Indra, Bhānu, Bhaga, Aryaman, and the golden-semened one.
