दुर्बलं पीड्यमानं यो बलवान्समुपेक्षते
Whoever, being strong, neglects the weak who are being oppressed—
व्यवहारे पक्षपाती जिह्वारोगी भवेन्नरः
A man who is partial in judgment becomes afflicted with disease of the tongue.
स्वयं पाकाग्रभोजी यो गलरोगमवाप्नुयात्
He who eats the choicest food himself incurs disease of the throat.
पर्वमैथुन कृन्मेही परित्यज्य स्वगेहिनीम्
One who, during a festival, has intercourse and urinates, abandoning his own wife—
परिक्षीणान्मित्रबन्धून्स्वामिनं दयितानुगान् 1.2.51.
Those who forsake friends, relatives, masters, or loyal followers who are diminished—
छद्मनोपचरेद्यस्तु पितरौ स्वामिनं गुरून्
Whoever deceives his parents, master, or teachers—
विश्रब्धस्यापहारी तु दुःखानां भाजनं भवेत्
He who steals from one who trusts him becomes a vessel of sorrows.
दुर्बलवृषवाही यः कटिलूती भवेत्स च
He who drives a weak bull becomes a louse.
जात्यंधश्चापि यो गोघ्नो निःपशुर्दुःखकृद्गवाम्
And one who kills a cow is born blind by birth, and brings suffering to cows.
निस्तेजकः सभायां यो गलगण्डी स जायते
He who deprives another of honor in an assembly is born with a swelling in the throat.
अजविक्रयकृद्व्याधः कुण्डाशी भृतको भवेत्
A seller of goats, a hunter, one who eats from a broken vessel, or a hired servant he becomes.
अभक्ष्यादो गण्डमाली स्त्रीखादी चाऽऽसुतस्य कृत्
By eating what is forbidden, he becomes afflicted with glandular disease, or is born as a woman-eater, or as one who is born from a drunkard.
शास्त्रचौरः केकराक्षः कथां पुण्यां च द्वेष्टि यः
One who steals scriptures, who has a crooked eye, or who hates virtuous stories.
देवद्विजगवां वृत्तिहारको वांतभक्षकृत्
One who takes the livelihood of gods, brahmins, or cows, or who eats vomit.
व्यवहारे च्छलग्राही भृत्यग्रस्तो भवेन्नरः 1.2.51.
In transactions, one who resorts to deceit becomes consumed by servitude.
वात रोगी कुवैद्यः स्याद्दुश्चर्मा गुरुतल्पगः
Afflicted by wind-disease is the bad physician; one with diseased skin is he who approaches the teacher’s wife.
स्वसारं मातरं पुत्रवधूं गच्छन्नबीजवान्
He who goes to his sister, mother, or daughter-in-law is born without seed.
इत्येष लक्षणोद्देशः पापिनां परिकीर्तितः
Thus is described the enumeration of the marks of sinners.
एते नरक विभ्रष्टा भुक्त्वा योनीः सहस्रशः
These, fallen from hell, having experienced thousands of wombs.
ये हि धर्मं न मन्यंते तथा ये व्यसनैर्जिताः
Those indeed who do not respect dharma, and those who are overcome by vices.
येषां त्वंतगतं पापं स्वर्गाद्वा ये समागताः
Those whose sin has come to an end, or who have come from heaven.
भवंति चात्र श्लोकाः तस्माद्धर्मं सुखार्थाय कुर्यात्पापं विवर्जयेत्
There are also verses on this: Therefore, for the sake of happiness, one should practice dharma and avoid sin.
लोकद्वयेऽपि यत्सौख्यं तद्धर्मात्प्रोच्यते यतः
For the happiness in both worlds is said to arise from dharma.
मुहूर्तमपि जीवेत नरः शुक्लेन कर्मणा
Even for a moment, a man should live by righteous action.
इति पृष्टं त्वया विप्र यथाशक्त्या मयेरितम् 1.2.51.
Thus, O brahmin, as you have asked, I have declared to the best of my ability.
भगवान्भास्करः प्रीतो बभूवातीव विस्मितः
The blessed Sun, greatly pleased, became exceedingly astonished.
प्रशशंस च तान्विप्रान्हारीतप्रमुखांस्तदा
He praised those brahmins, headed by Harita, at that time.
अथ प्रजापतिर्धन्यो यन्मर्यादाभिपाल्यते
Then the Prajapati is blessed, since the boundaries are maintained.
येषां मध्ये बालबुद्धिरियमेतादृशी स्फुटा
Among whom this childlike intellect has arisen so clearly,
असंशयं त्रिलोकस्थमेषामविदितं न हि
Undoubtedly, for them, nothing in the three worlds remains unknown.
