पुण्यं तेन भवेत्स्वर्गो नरकस्तद्विपर्ययात्
By virtue, heaven is attained; by its opposite, hell.
अर्वाक्सपिंडीकरणं यस्य वर्षाच्च वा कृतम्
For whom the offering of the rice-ball has been performed within a year,
यैरिष्टं च त्रिभिर्मेधैरर्चितं वा सुरत्रयम्
By whom the triple sacrifice has been offered, or the three gods have been worshipped,
शुद्धेन पुण्येन दिवं च शुद्धां पापेन शुद्धेन तथा तमोंधम्
By pure virtue, one attains a pure heaven; by pure sin, likewise, a realm of utter darkness.
प्रश्नत्रयं चेति तव प्रणीतमुत्पत्तिमृत्यू परलोकवासः
This threefold inquiry of yours concerns birth, death, and residence in the other world.
आगमं समुपाश्रित्य तत्तथैव न संशयः
Relying upon scripture, it is exactly so; there is no doubt.
किंत्वत्र नास्तिकाः पापाः सन्दिह्यन्तेऽल्पचेतनाः
But here, the sinful atheists, of little understanding, are doubtful.
इहैव कस्य कस्यैव कर्मणः पापकस्य च
Here itself, for each and every person, and for every sinful deed,
यथा मम गुरुः प्राह यन्मे चेतसि संस्थितम्
Just as my teacher spoke, which is established in my mind,
ब्रह्महा क्षयरोगी स्यात्सुरापः श्यावदंतकः
A slayer of a Brahmin becomes afflicted with wasting disease; a drinker of liquor has blackened teeth.
संसर्गी सर्वरोगी स्यात्पंचपातकिनस्त्वमी
One who associates with them becomes afflicted with all diseases; these are the five great sinners.
स्वयं प्रकीर्तयेच्चापि मूकः पापोऽभिजायते
If one proclaims himself, a mute sinful person is born.
अवज्ञाकारकस्तेषां कृमिरेवाभिजायते
For those who act with contempt, a worm is born as their result.
चौर्याय साधुद्रव्याणां दद्याद्यावत्पदानि च
Whoever gives away the possessions of the virtuous for theft, even as far as his steps go,
दत्त्वा हरति तद्भूयो जायते कृकलासकः 1.2.51.
Having given and then taking back, he is again born as a kṛkalāsa insect.
रजस्वलामभिगच्छंश्च चंडालः संप्रजायते
One who approaches a menstruating woman is born as a caṇḍāla.
दर्दुरो रूप्यहारी स्यात्कूटसाक्षी मुखारुजः
A thief of silver becomes a frog; a false witness, one afflicted with mouth disease.
प्रतिज्ञायाप्रयच्छन्यो ह्यल्पायुर्जायते नरः
A man who promises but does not give is born with a short lifespan.
नैष्ठिकान्नाशनाद्भूयो निवृत्तो रोगवान्सदा
One who abandons lifelong fasting is always afflicted with disease.
स्वामिना धर्मयुक्तो यस्त्वन्यायेन समाचरेत्
But one who, though bound to his master by righteousness, acts unjustly—
दुर्बलं पीड्यमानं यो बलवान्समुपेक्षते
Whoever, being strong, neglects the weak who are being oppressed—
व्यवहारे पक्षपाती जिह्वारोगी भवेन्नरः
A man who is partial in judgment becomes afflicted with disease of the tongue.
स्वयं पाकाग्रभोजी यो गलरोगमवाप्नुयात्
He who eats the choicest food himself incurs disease of the throat.
पर्वमैथुन कृन्मेही परित्यज्य स्वगेहिनीम्
One who, during a festival, has intercourse and urinates, abandoning his own wife—
परिक्षीणान्मित्रबन्धून्स्वामिनं दयितानुगान् 1.2.51.
Those who forsake friends, relatives, masters, or loyal followers who are diminished—
छद्मनोपचरेद्यस्तु पितरौ स्वामिनं गुरून्
Whoever deceives his parents, master, or teachers—
विश्रब्धस्यापहारी तु दुःखानां भाजनं भवेत्
He who steals from one who trusts him becomes a vessel of sorrows.
दुर्बलवृषवाही यः कटिलूती भवेत्स च
He who drives a weak bull becomes a louse.
जात्यंधश्चापि यो गोघ्नो निःपशुर्दुःखकृद्गवाम्
And one who kills a cow is born blind by birth, and brings suffering to cows.
निस्तेजकः सभायां यो गलगण्डी स जायते
He who deprives another of honor in an assembly is born with a swelling in the throat.
