व्यानो हृदि स्थितो नित्यं तथा देहचरोपि च
Vyāna, always situated in the heart, also moves throughout the body.
पाचको रजकश्चैव साधकालोचकौ तथा
Pācaka, rājaka, sādhaka, ālocaka—these are so named.
पाचकस्तु पचत्यन्नं नित्यं पक्वाशये स्थित.
Pācaka, residing in the stomach, constantly digests food.
साधको हृदिसंस्थश्च बुद्ध्याद्युत्साहकारकः
Sādhaka, established in the heart, is the cause of intellect and enthusiasm.
त्वक्संस्थो भ्राजको देहं भ्राजयेन्निर्मलीकृतः
Bhrājaka, situated in the skin, makes the body shine, purified.
आलंबकस्तथा देहे पंचधा सोम उच्यते
Ālaṃbaka in the body, and soma is said to be fivefold.
बोधको रसनास्थश्च रसानामवबोधकः
Bodhaka, residing in the tongue, is the perceiver of tastes.
सर्वसंधिगतश्चैव श्लेष्मणः श्लेष्मकृत्तथा 1.2.50.
Present in all the joints, it is phlegm and also the producer of phlegm.
एवं वाय्वग्निसोमैश्च देहः संधारितस्त्वसौ
Thus, the body is sustained by wind, fire, and soma.
पार्थिवानीह जानीहि घ्राणकेशनखानि च
Here, know the earthly elements: the nose, hair, and nails.
नाभिर्मेदो यकृन्मज्जा अंत्रमामाशयः शिरा
The navel, fat, liver, marrow, intestines, stomach, and veins—
नेत्रयोर्मडलं शुक्लं कफाद्भवति पैतृकम्
The circular white of the eyes arises from phlegm and is inherited from the father.
पक्ष्ममण्डलमेकं तु द्वितीयं चर्ममण्डलम्
One circle is the eyelashes, and the second is the circle of skin.
दृङ्मण्डलं पंचमं तु नेत्रं स्यात्पंचमण्डलम्
The third circle is the iris, and the fifth is the eye itself, forming the fifth circle.
उपांगो नेत्रपर्यंतो नासा मूलमपांगकः
The outer corner of the eye up to the nose is called the root of the outer angle.
असृङ्मांसमयी जिह्वा सर्वेषामेव देहिनाम्
The tongue, made of blood and flesh, is present in all embodied beings.
एवमत्र स्थिते जीवो देहेऽस्मिन्सप्तसप्तके
Thus, the soul remains in this body, which consists of seven sets of seven.
त्वगसृग्मांसमित्याहुस्त्रिकं मातृसमुद्भवम् 1.2.50.
Skin, blood, and flesh are said to be the triple origin from the mother.
एवं भूतमयं देहं पंचभूतसमुद्भवैः
Thus, the body is composed of elements, born from the five great elements.
तदन्नं पिण्डकवलैर्ग्रासैर्भुक्तं च देहिभिः
That food, eaten in morsels and mouthfuls by embodied beings,
संप्रविश्यान्नमध्ये तु पृथगन्नपृथग्जलम्
Having entered the food, the separate food and separate water,
जलस्याधः स्वयं प्राणः स्थित्वाग्निं धमते शनैः
Below the water, the vital breath itself resides and gently stirs the fire.
तदन्नमुष्णतोयेन समंतात्पच्यते पुनः
That food, together with warm water, is again cooked thoroughly.
मलैर्द्वादशभिः किट्टं भिन्नं देहाद्बहिर्व्रजेत्
By twelve impurities, the waste is separated and exits the body.
रोमकूपाणि चैव स्युर्द्वादशैते मलाश्रयाः
The hair pores are twelve, and these are the seats of the impurities.
तासां मुखेषु तं सूक्ष्मं व्यानः स्थापयते रसम्
At their openings, the subtle essence is placed by the vyāna vital force.
ततः प्रयांति संपूर्णास्ताश्च देहं समंततः
Then, when they are filled, they spread throughout the body.
पच्यते पच्यमानस्तु रुधिरत्वं भजेत्पुनः 1.2.50.
As it is digested, the food again becomes blood.
नखा मज्जा खवैमल्यं शुक्रवृद्धिः क्रमाद्भवेत्
From the nails and marrow, impurities are expelled, and the increase of semen occurs in due order.
एवमेतद्विनिष्पन्नं शरीरं पुण्यहेतवे
Thus, in this way, the body is formed for the sake of merit.
