मध्ये क्लीबस्तु वामे स्त्री दक्षिणे पुरुषस्तथा
In the middle, it is neuter; on the left, female; on the right, male.
यस्यां तिष्ठत्यसौ योनौ तां च वेत्ति न संशयः
Wherever it remains in the womb, that is surely known, without doubt.
अंधे तमसि किं दृश्यो गंधान्मोहं दृढं लभेत्
In blind darkness, what can be seen? It attains a strong delusion of smells.
व्यायामे लभते मातुः क्लेशं व्याधेश्च वेदनाम्
Through movement, it experiences the mother's distress and the pain of disease.
सौकुमार्याद्रुजं तीव्रां जनयंति च तस्य ते
Because of its tenderness, those pains cause it intense suffering.
संतप्यते भृशं गर्भे कर्मभिश्च पुरातनैः
It is greatly tormented in the womb by its former deeds.
जन्म चेदहमाप्स्यामि मानुष्ये जीवितं तथा
If I attain birth, and likewise human life—
एवं तु चिंतयानस्य सीमंतोन्नयनादनु
Thus reflecting, at the time of the parting of the hairline—
ततः स्वकाले संपूर्णे सूतिमारुतचालितः ।।1.2.49.
Then, when the proper time is complete, moved by the wind of birth—
अधोमुखः संकटेन योनिद्वारेण निःसरेत्
Head downward, through a narrow passage, it emerges from the womb.
करपत्रसमस्पर्शं करसंस्पर्शनादिकम्
It feels sensations like the touch of a sharp leaf, and other touches of the hand.
प्राक्कर्मवशगस्यास्य गर्भज्ञानं च नश्यति
Due to the force of previous karma, its knowledge from the womb is lost.
अस्थिपट्टतुलास्तंभस्नायुबंधेन यंत्रितम्
Bound by bones, membranes, pillars, and ligaments, it is constrained.
सप्तभित्तिसुसंबद्धं छन्नं रोम तृणैरपि
Firmly joined by seven walls, covered even with hair like grass.
ओष्ठद्वयकपाटं च दंतार्गलविमुद्रितम्
The two lips form a gate, sealed by the barrier of the teeth.
जराशोकसमाविष्टं कालवक्त्रानलस्थितम्
It is afflicted by old age and sorrow, and remains within the fiery mouth of Time.
एवं संजायते पुंसो देहगेहमिदं द्विज
In this way, O twice-born, this body-house arises for a person.
मोक्षं स्वर्गं च नरकमास्ते संसाधयन्नपि
He attains liberation, heaven, or hell, even while accomplishing worldly aims.
शरीरलक्षणं श्रोतुं पुनरिच्छामि तद्वद
I wish to hear again about the characteristics of the body; please describe them.
पादमूलं च पातालं प्रपदं च रसातलम्
The soles of the feet correspond to Pātāla, and the forefeet to Rasātala.
तलातलं तथा गुल्फौ जंघे चास्य महातलम्
Talātala is likewise at the ankles, and Mahātala at the shanks.
नाभिं महीतलं प्राहुर्भुवर्लोकमथोदरम्
They say the navel is the earth-plane, and the abdomen is the Bhuvarloka.
नेत्रे तपः सत्यलोकं शीर्षदेशं वदंति च
The eyes are Tapoloka, and Satyaloka is said to be at the head.
तथात्र धातवः सप्त नामतस्तान्निबोध मे
Likewise, there are seven bodily substances here; listen to their names from me.
अस्थ्नामत्र शतानि स्युस्त्रीणि षष्ट्यधिकानि च
Here, the number of bones is three hundred and sixty.
षट्पंचाशत्सहस्राणि तथान्यानि नवैव तु
There are also fifty-six thousand and exactly nine others.
सार्धाभिस्तिसृभिश्छन्नं समंताद्रोमकोटिभिः
It is covered all around by hair follicles, numbering three and a half times as many.
षडंगानि प्रधानानि कथ्यमानानि मे शृणु 1.2.50.
Hear from me the six principal limbs as they are described.
अंत्राण्यत्र तथा त्रीणि सार्धव्यामत्रयाणि च
There are three intestines here, each one and a half cubits long.
ऊर्ध्वनालमधोवक्त्रं हृदि पद्मं प्रकीर्त्यते
The upper end is the channel, the lower end is the mouth; in the heart, the lotus is spoken of.
