एषा तृप्यति भक्तानां प्रणामेनापि भारत
She is satisfied even by the salutation of her devotees, O Bhārata.
कुण्डं चास्या मया देव्याः पुण्यं निष्पादितं शुभम्
By me, a sacred and auspicious pond has been established for the goddess.
हरसिद्धिर्देवसिद्धिर्धर्मसिद्धिश्च भारत
Success in removing obstacles, divine accomplishment, and righteousness, O Bhārata,
यश्च पूजयते देवीं स्वल्पेन बहुनापि वा
Whoever worships the goddess, whether with little or much,
एवमेता महादुर्गा नवतीर्थेऽत्र संस्थिताः
Thus, these great forms of Durgā are established at the ninety sacred sites here.
आश्विनस्य च मासस्य नवरात्रे विशेषतः
Especially during the Navarātra of the month of Āśvina,
बलिपूपकनैवेद्यैस्तर्पणैर्धूपगंधिभिः
With offerings of cakes, food, libations, incense, and fragrances,
भूतप्रेतपिशाचाद्या नोपकुर्युः प्रपीडनम् 1.2.47.
Spirits, ghosts, and fiends and the like will not cause any affliction.
पुत्रार्थी लभते पुत्रान्धनार्थी धनमाप्नुयात्
One desiring a son obtains sons; one desiring wealth attains wealth.
आसां यः कुरुते भक्तिं नरो नारी च श्रद्धया
Whoever, man or woman, worships these with faith,
कामगव्य इमा देव्यश्चिन्तामणिनिभास्तथा
These goddesses grant desired objects, and are like wish-fulfilling jewels.
तथात्र भूतमातास्ति हरसिद्धेस्तु दक्षिणे
Here too is Bhūtamātā, to the south of the place of Harasiddhi.
पूर्वं किल गुहो विद्वान्पुण्ये सारस्वते तटे
Formerly, the wise Guha, on the sacred bank of the Sarasvatī,
स च सर्वाणि भूतानि मर्यादायामधारयत्
He kept all beings within their proper bounds.
यदमंत्रहुतं किंचिद्वेदबाह्यं च यत्कृतम्
Whatever is offered without mantra, or performed outside the Vedas,
ततस्त्वनेन भोगेन तानि नंदंति कृत्स्नशः
By this enjoyment, they are all completely satisfied.
पुण्यं तान्येव भूतानि ग्रसंत्याक्रम्य देवताः
The gods consume only those beings who are virtuous, having overpowered them.
स वै तदाकर्ण्य क्रुद्धो गुहः काल इवाभवत् 1.2.47.
Hearing this, Guha became angry, like Time itself.
ज्वालामाला सुदुर्दर्शा नारी द्वादशलोचना शीघ्रमादिश मां कृत्ये किं करोमि तवेप्सितम्
A woman, wreathed in flames and terrible to behold, with twelve eyes, said: 'Command me quickly in your task—what do you wish me to do?'
मनुष्यदत्तं सकलं भुज्यते स्वेच्छयाधमैः
All that is given by humans is consumed at will by the wicked.
एतास्त्वानुव्रजिष्यंति देव्यः कोटिशतं शुभे
These goddesses, numbering a hundred million, will follow you, O auspicious one.
मयूरं समुपास्थाय गुहशक्तिः समागता
Mounted upon a peacock, Guha's power assembled.
जघान च समासाद्य देवी नानाविधायुधैः
Approaching, the goddess struck with various kinds of weapons.
प्रसादयंति तां देवीं नानावेषैः सुदीनवत्
They sought to appease that goddess, adopting many forms, in great distress.
नृत्यंति देवि पद्माक्षि प्रसीदेति पुनःपुनः
They danced, saying again and again, 'Be gracious, O lotus-eyed goddess!'
तां ते प्रोचुस्त्राहि नस्त्वं भूतमाता भवेश्वरि
They said to her: 'Protect us, O Mother of beings, O Lady of the world!'
ये चैवं त्वां तोषयन्ति तेषां देहि वरान्सदा ।। 1.2.47.
And always grant boons to those who thus please you.
अरिष्टाभरणैः पुष्पैर्दधिभक्तैश्च पूजनैः
With ornaments, flowers, offerings of curd-rice, and acts of worship.
एवं दत्त्वा वरं देवी मुमुदे भूतसंवृता
Having thus granted the boon, the goddess rejoiced, surrounded by spirits.
य एनां प्रणमेन्मर्त्यः सर्वारिष्टैर्विमुच्यते
Whoever among mortals bows to her is freed from all misfortunes.
