The Supreme Lord divided His own portions, known as individual souls.
Just as sparks emerge from heated iron, so do souls emanate.
From the sattvic aspect of the senses, the three qualities also arise.
Those seeking liberation purify passion and darkness through purity alone.
By cultivating sattvic ego, one attains perfection.
Those desiring to overcome worldly existence should always pursue purity.
Study of scripture, knowledge, purity, and control of the senses follow.
Unjust acquisition of wealth, lethargy, and disbelief also occur.
Therefore, one should worship the deity with intellect and other sattvic qualities.
Liberation and suffering both arise from intellect and its companions.
In the absence of these qualities, nothing comes into being.
Thus, passion and darkness must be purified by sattvic qualities.
Both the happy and the unhappy living beings are those who know scripture.

He divided the four hundred thousand sources of living beings.
All these, portions of the Lord, are deluded by natural qualities.
For the welfare of food, milk, and living beings as well.
Indeed, it is so; yet, O wise one, shall I ask further about this?
Why do those devoted followers not protect mortals from suffering?
Thus my mind is bewildered; do you consider yourself a child?

Both impure and pure are remembered as devoted to the gods, in two ways.
When an impure person worships the deities,
The deluded one repeatedly engages in those improper acts; if a pure person worships, and yet something inauspicious occurs,
The previously performed karma of that one is manifest, and a multitude is released.
Why is it that one bathes at holy places, yet another is released—how is this so?
Rama committed the abduction of Sita; how is it that another is released?

Indra, Chandra, Ravi, Vishnu, and others as foremost, attain what has been done.

What is enjoyed over many births may be experienced in a single birth.
Those who are pure, observing vows to the deities, undergo suffering caused by past sins.
Therefore, the gods should always be worshipped by the pure, endowed with faith.
