आदित्याज्जायते वृष्टिर्वृष्टेरन्नं ततः प्रजाः ४५.
From the sun arises rain; from rain, food; and from food, living beings.
चौरप्रायस्य कलुषाज्जन्म जायेज्जनस्य हि ४५.
From impurity, mostly due to theft, is born the generation of people.
पशवो लकुटैर्हन्युर्यजमानं मृतं हताः ४५.
The cattle are struck with sticks; the sacrificer, once dead, is slain.
यज्ञ एवं विचार्यासौ यज्ञसारं समास्थितः ४५.
Thus, having considered the sacrifice, he abides in the essence of sacrifice.
नैवेद्यं हविषश्चैव यज्ञोऽयं हि विकल्मषः ४५.
The offerings and oblations—this sacrifice is indeed without sin.
केचिच्छंसन्ति संन्यासं नन्दभद्रो न मन्यते ४५.
Some praise renunciation, but Nandabhadra does not accept it.
उभयभ्रष्ट एवासौ भिन्ना भूमिर्विनश्यति ४५.
He is indeed fallen from both paths; the divided earth is destroyed.
कस्यचिन्नैव कर्माणि शपते वा प्रशंसति ४५.
He neither curses nor praises anyone's actions.
न द्वेष्टि नो कामयते न विरुद्धोऽनुरुध्यते ४५.
He neither hates nor desires; he is not opposed nor attached.
अभयः सर्वभूतेभ्यो यथांधबधिराकृतिः ४५.
He is harmless to all beings, like one who is blind and deaf in appearance.
कारणाद्धर्ममन्विच्छन्न लोभं च ततश्चरन्॥ ४५.
Seeking righteousness for a reason, he then acts with greed.
विविच्य नंदभद्रस्तत्सारं मोक्षेषु जगृहे ४५.
Having discerned the essence, Nandabhadra embraced it among the paths of liberation.
यस्यां छिंदंति वृषणा वृषाणां चैव नासिकाम् ४५.
In which the testicles are cut off, and also the noses of bulls.
बहुदंशमयान्देशान्नयंति बहुकर्दमान् ४५.
They lead to lands full of many biting insects and much mud.
मन्यंते भ्रूणहत्यापि विशिष्टा नास्य कर्मणः ४५.
They consider even the killing of a fetus to be superior to this act.
भूमिं भूमिशयांश्चैव हंति काष्ठमयोमुखम् ४५.
He kills the earth and those who lie upon the earth, with a wooden or iron weapon.
आदित्यश्चंद्रमा वायुः प्रभूत्यैव च तांस्तु यः ४५.
The sun, the moon, the wind, and other such powers—whoever they may be—
अजोऽग्निर्वरुणो मेषः सूर्यश्च पृथिवी विराट् ४५.
The unborn one, fire, Varuṇa, the ram, the sun, the earth, and Virāṭ—
एवंविधसहस्रैश्च युता दोषैः कृषिः सदा ४५.
Agriculture is always joined with thousands of such faults as these.
धर्मे दद्यात्पशून्वृद्धान्पुष्यादेषा कृषिः कुतः ४५.
If one gives aged animals in righteousness, how can this agriculture be pure?
विसाधितव्यान्यन्नानि स्वशक्त्या देवपितृषु ४५.
Food must be offered to the gods and ancestors according to one’s own ability.
केचिच्छंसंति चैश्वर्यं नंदभद्रो न मन्यते ४५.
Some praise wealth, but Nandabhadra does not think so.
वधबंधनिरोधेन पीडयंति दिवानिशम् ४५.
By binding, killing, and restraining, they cause suffering day and night.
मातुः पितुर्वा बलिनः क्रेतुरग्नेः शुनोऽपि वा ४५.
Whether it belongs to the mother, the father, the strong, the buyer, the fire, or even the dog—
ऐश्वर्यमदपापिष्ठा महामद्यमदादयः ४५.
The worst of all is the intoxication of power and great pride from wealth.
आत्मवत्सर्वभृत्येषु श्रिया नैव च माद्यति॥ ४५.
He does not rejoice in prosperity among all dependents as he would for himself.
आत्मप्रत्ययवान्देही क्वेश्वरश्चेदृशोऽस्ति हि ४५.
If a person is self-assured, what need is there for such a lord?
स्वशक्त्या सर्व भूतेषु यदसौ न पराङ्मुखः ४५.
By his own power, he is not indifferent to any being.
श्रमेण संकरात्तापशीतवातक्षुधा तृषा ४५.
Through toil, confusion, heat, cold, wind, hunger, and thirst—
सौख्येन वा धनस्यापि श्रद्धया स्वल्पगोर्थवान् ४५.
Or even with comfort and wealth, with faith, he is content with little.
