पूरयेद्घृततैलाभ्यां पलैर्विशतिभिस्ततः ४४.
He should fill it with clarified butter and oil, twenty palas in weight.
वह्न्युक्तं विन्यसेन्मंत्रमभिशस्तस्य मूर्धनि ४४.
He should place it, with fire applied, and recite the mantra over the head of the accused.
शुद्धं ज्ञेयमसंदिग्धं विस्फोटादिविवर्जितम् ४४.
It should be recognized as pure, without doubt, and free from blisters and the like.
आयसं द्वादशपलं घटितं फालमुच्यते ४४.
A piece of iron weighing twelve palas, when joined, is called a phāla (blade).
वह्न्युक्तं विन्यसेन्मंत्रमभिशस्तस्य मूर्धनि ४४.
He should place it, with fire applied, and recite the mantra over the head of the accused.
गवां क्षीरं प्रदातव्यं जिह्वाशोधनमुत्तमम् ४४.
Cow’s milk should be given; it is the best purifier of the tongue.
तं विशुद्धं विजानीयाद्विशुद्धा चेत्तु जायते ४४.
He should consider him pure if he is found pure; if purity arises, indeed.
चौर्ये तु तंदुला देया न चान्यत्र कथंचन ४४.
But in the case of theft, rice grains should be given, and never anything else.
प्रभाते कारिणे देया भक्षणाय न संशयः ४४.
In the morning, it should be given to the doer for eating, without doubt.
पिप्पलस्याथ भूर्जस्य न त्वन्यस्य कथंचन ४४.
Of the pippala or bhurja tree, but never of any other, in any case.
मृन्मये भाजने कृत्वा सवितुः पुरतः स्थितः ४४.
Having placed it in an earthen vessel, he stood before the Sun.
दीयसे धर्मतत्त्वज्ञैर्मानुषाणां विशोधनम् ४४.
You are given, by those who know the essence of dharma, as a means of purification for humans.
निष्ठीवने कृते तेषां सवितुः पुरतः स्थिते ४४.
When they have spat, standing before the Sun,
एवमष्टविधं दिव्यं पापसंशयच्छेदनम् ४४.
Thus, this eightfold divine method cuts away the doubts of sin.
जलदिव्यं तथा प्राहुर्द्विप्रकारं पुराविदः ४४.
The knowers of old also speak of the divine water in two forms.
बाणक्षेपस्तथादानं यावद्वीर्यवता कृतम् ४४.
The shooting of arrows and the taking up, as long as it is done by the strong,
एवंविधमिदं स्थानं भट्टादित्यस्य भारत ४४.
Such is this place of Bhaṭṭāditya, O Bhārata.
तथा बहूदकस्थाने कथामाकर्णयाद्भुताम् ४५.
Likewise, in the place of many waters, one should listen to the wondrous tale.
तदस्ति चात्र संक्रांतं तस्मात्प्रोक्तं बहूदकम् ४५.
And here, too, there is a transfer; therefore, it is called 'many waters.'
स्थापितं शोभनं लिंगं कपिलश्वरसंज्ञितम् ४५.
A beautiful liṅga was established here, known as Kapilaśvara.
वणिक्संपूजयामास त्रिकालं च कृतादरः ४५.
A merchant worshipped it with devotion three times a day.
नाज्ञातं तस्य किंचिच्च यद्धर्मेषु प्रकीर्त्यते ४५.
Nothing about him was unknown that is spoken of in matters of dharma.
कर्मणा मनसा वाचा धर्ममेनमुपाश्रितः ४५.
By action, mind, and speech, he resorted to this dharma.
विदोषो यो हि सर्वत्र निश्चित्यैवं व्यवस्थितः ४५.
He who is without fault in all respects, having determined thus, remained established.
निर्मथ्य नन्दभद्रेण आहृतं तन्निशामय ४५.
Having churned, Nandabhadra brought it—listen to this.
परिच्छिन्नैः काष्ठतृणैः शरणं तेन कारितम् ४५.
With broken pieces of wood and grass, he made a shelter.
सर्वभूतेषु वाणिज्यमल्पलाभेन सोऽचरत् ४५.
Among all beings, he practiced trade with little profit.
अमाययैव भूतेभ्यो विक्रीणात्यस्य सद्व्रतम् ४५.
With complete honesty, he sold to beings—this is his noble vow.
दोषमेनं विनिश्चित्य श्रृणु तं पांडुनन्दन ४५.
Having discerned this fault, listen to it, O son of Pandu.
यजन्यज्ञैर्जगद्धंति स्वं चांधतमसं नयेत् ४५.
He destroys the world with sacrificial rites, and leads himself into utter darkness.
