इष्टिकाभस्मपाषाणकपालास्थीनि वर्जयेत् ४४.
Bricks, ashes, stones, potsherds, and bones should be avoided.
मूर्ध्नि पत्रं ततो न्यस्य न्यस्तपत्रं निवेशयेत् ४४.
A leaf should be placed on the head, and then the placed leaf should be set down.
ब्रह्मणस्त्वं सुता देवी तुलानाम्नेति कथ्यते ४४.
O goddess, you are called the daughter of Brahmā, the leader of balances.
गुरुलाघवसंयोगात्तुला तेन निगद्यसे ४४.
Because of the union of heaviness and lightness, you are thus called the balance.
भूय आरोपयेत्तं तु नरं तस्मिन्सपत्रकम् ४४.
Again, one should place that man upon the leafless spot.
हीयमानो न शुद्धः स्यादिति धर्मविदो विदुः ४४.
If diminished, he is not purified—so declare those who know dharma.
एवं निःसंशयं ज्ञानं यच्चान्यायं न लोपयेत् ४४.
Thus, let knowledge be without doubt, and let justice not be neglected.
अथातः संप्रवक्ष्यामि विषदिव्यं श्रृणुष्व मे॥ ४४.
Now, I shall expound the divine ordeal of poison; listen to me.
द्विप्रकारं च तत्प्रोक्तं घटसर्पविषं तथा ४४.
It is said to be of two kinds: the ordeal of the pot and the ordeal of the serpent.
यवाः सप्त प्रदातव्या अथवा षड्घृतप्लुताः ४४.
Seven barley grains should be given, or six soaked in ghee.
त्वं विष ब्रह्मणः पुत्र सत्यधर्मे व्यवस्थितः ४४.
You are poison, son of Brahma, established in truth and righteousness.
येन वेगैर्विना जीर्णं छर्दिमूर्च्छाविवर्जितम् ४४.
By which, without force, it is digested, free from vomiting and fainting.
क्षुधितं क्षुधितः सर्पं घटस्थं प्रोच्य पूर्ववत् ४४.
The hungry serpent, placed in the pot, is addressed as before.
अग्निदिव्यं यथा प्राह विरंचिस्तच्छृणुष्व मे ४४.
Hear from me what Viranchi declared regarding the fire ordeal.
मंडलान्मंडलं कार्यं पूर्वेणेति विनिश्चयः ४४.
Circle after circle should be made, as previously determined.
आर्द्रवाससमाहूय तथा चैवाप्युपोपितम् ४४.
Summoning one in wet garments, and likewise one who has approached.
प्रत्यक्षं कारयेद्दिव्यं राज्ञो वाधिकृतस्य वा ४४.
The ordeal should be performed openly, for the king or for the one appointed.
पश्चिमे दिनकाले हि प्राङ्मुखः प्राञ्जलिः शुचिः ४४.
At the end of the day, facing east, with joined palms, pure.
लक्षयेयुः कृतादीनि हस्तयोस्तस्य हारिणः ४४.
They should observe the marks made on his hands by the bearers.
नवेन कृतसूत्रेण कार्पासेन दृढं यथा ४४.
With a new thread, firmly made of cotton, as prescribed.
पिंडं हुताशसंतप्तं पंचाशत्पलिकं दृढम् ४४.
A lump, fifty palas in weight, heated by fire, firm.
रक्तचंदनधूपाभ्यां रक्तपुष्पैस्तथैव च ४४.
With red sandalwood and incense, and likewise with red flowers.
मंत्रेणानेन संयुक्तं ब्राह्मणाभिहितेन च ४४.
Endowed with this mantra, as declared by the Brahmins,
पापं पुनासि वै यस्मात्तस्मात्पावक उच्यसे ४४.
Because you purify sin, therefore you are called Pāvaka (the purifier).
जठरस्थोऽसि भूतानां ततो वेत्सि शुभाशुभम् ४४.
You dwell in the stomachs of beings; thus you know what is auspicious and inauspicious.
अथवा शुद्धभावेषु शीतो भवमहाबल ४४.
Or, in those who are pure in nature, you become cool, O mighty one.
परिक्रम्य शनैर्जह्याल्लोहपिंडं ततः क्षितौ ४४.
After circling, one should gently place the lump of iron on the ground.
निर्विकारौ करौ दृष्ट्वा शुद्धो भवति धर्मतः ४४.
Seeing the hands unaltered, he becomes pure according to dharma.
पुनस्त्वाहारयेल्लोहं विधिरेष प्रकीर्तितः ४४.
Again, he should take up the iron; this is the prescribed procedure.
कारयेदायसं पात्रं ताम्रं वा षोडशांगुलम् ४४.
He should make a vessel of iron or copper, measuring sixteen fingers in breadth.
