The pit for assuming forms and those trees, O Bhārata,
On the seventh day of the bright fortnight in the month of Māgha, whether woman or man,
Endless merit accrues to the one who worships that chariot.
And all those people who see it are blessed, without a doubt.
Those men who arrange the chariot festival will become blessed.
On the seventh day, in Bhaṭṭāditya’s sacred tank, one attains the fruit of giving a hundred tawny cows.
All the Vasudevas and others declare this, O great sage.
Without offering arghya to Bhāskara, all acts performed are fruitless.
Just as Brahmā and the other gods offer arghya to the great-souled one.
First, at sunrise, having purified oneself, one should draw a circle with cow dung, then make a smaller circle with red sandalwood; after that, fill a copper vessel with red sandalwood water, white sandalwood, and other substances, and in its center place gold, rice grains, dūrvā grass, curds, and ghee.
One should touch one’s own body with this mantra, reciting it seven times, then remain standing; afterwards, meditating on the god Savitṛ, twelve-formed, seated in the center of the circle and worshipped by the gods, place the previously mentioned arghya vessel on one’s head, kneel on the ground facing the sun, concentrate the mind on him, and recite the arghya mantra.
By the sound of whose utterance, Bhāskara is established in the chariot.
Om—they say that seven meters and horses stand in the chariot.
Jaya, Vijaya, Jayantī, and Pāpanāśanī.
Ḍiṇḍi, Śeṣanāga, and likewise Gaṇādhyakṣa.
Rājñī, Nikṣubhā Devī, Lalitā, and Saṃjñikā.
Surrounded by these, who dwell in the north and south quarters.
The blessed Bhānu, initiating this sacrifice, together with them.
O thousand-rayed, bestower of boons, embodiment of life, I bow to you; uttering 'Om vaṣaṭ', gazing at the pair of feet of Sūrya, pour water from a lotus vessel onto the earth as pādya—that is called the welcoming; 'Welcome, O Blessed One, come, grant me your favor, be seated; remain here for now while I perform your worship.'
Thus, one should make this request with the mantra to the lotus-seated one; for the god seated on the āsana, one should perform the remaining worship in this manner; thus is the bathing with milk and other substances. Then, offer a pair of pure garments with this mantra: 'One is your waist-ornament, the second is your upper garment.'
Then one should offer the sacred thread with this mantra: 'O Lord of the gods, accept this sacred thread; salutations to you.'
Then, according to one's ability, one should offer a white crown, rings, and other ornaments with this mantra: 'Accept this adornment, which I offer with devotion.'
Having thus presented the ornaments, one should then offer an ointment mixed with saffron, kumkuma, camphor, and red sandalwood.
Om, you who are most dear among trees, this is your sap, O blazing one.
Then one should perform worship with campaka, japa, karavira, karṇaka, kesara, kokanada, and other such flowers.
Om, the sap of the forest trees is divine, rich in fragrance, and the scent is excellent.
Then one should offer food prepared from milk and other ingredients with this mantra: 'I have given this full vessel; accept it and be gracious to me.'
Then, after offering water for purification, betel, lamp, waving of lights, and a fan, and again performing worship as able, one should praise, say 'Forgive my good and bad deeds,' and then dismiss the deity.
Whoever thus offers arghya to Bhāskara, whether to the image or even to the maṇḍala,
Whoever presents arghya to Bhāskara with this procedure,
