स चान्नौषधिलेपेन क्षणमात्रं प्रशाम्यति ४२.
With food and medicine applied, it subsides for only a moment.
तयाभिभूतो म्रियते यथान्यैर्व्याधिभिर्न्नरः ४२.
Overcome by it, a man dies just as with other diseases.
सर्वमाभरणं भारं सर्वमालेपनं मम ४२.
All ornaments are burdens, all ointments are mine.
इत्येवं राज्यसंभोगैः कुतः सौख्यं विचारतः ४२.
Thus, considering the enjoyments of kingship, where is happiness?
प्रायेण श्रीमदालेपान्नहुषाद्या महानृपाः ४२.
Mostly, from the pride of wealth, great kings like Nahusha are ruined.
उपर्युपरि देवानामन्योन्यातिशये स्थितम् ४२.
Above and above, among the gods, each surpasses the other.
न चान्यत्क्रियते कर्म सोऽत्र दोषः सुदारुणः ४२.
No other action is performed; this fault here is most terrible.
पुण्यमूलक्षये तद्वत्पातयंति दिवौकसः ४२.
When the root of merit is exhausted, the gods fall in the same way.
तथा नारकिणां दुःखं प्रसिद्धं किं च वर्ण्यते ४२.
Likewise, the suffering of those in hell is well known; what more can be described?
कुठारैश्ठेदनं तीव्रं वल्कलानां च तक्षणम् ४२.
There is intense cutting with axes and the splitting of bark garments.
अपमर्दश्च सततं गजैर्वन्यैश्च देहिभिः ४२.
There is constant trampling by elephants and wild beasts upon living creatures.
दुष्टानां घातनं लोके पाशेन च निबन्धनम् ४२.
There is the killing of the wicked in the world, and binding with a noose.
अकस्माज्जन्ममरणं कीटादीनां तथाविधम् ४२.
There is sudden birth and death of insects and the like, in such a manner.
क्षुत्तृट्क्लेशेन महता संत्रस्ताश्च सदा मृगाः ४२.
Great suffering from hunger and thirst, and animals are always in fear.
क्षुत्तृट्छीतादिदमनं वधबन्धनताडनम् ४२.
There is the torment of hunger, thirst, cold, and the like, as well as killing, binding, and beating.
वेणुकुन्तादिनिगडमुद्गरांऽकुशताडनम् ४२.
There is binding with ropes, spears, and the like, and striking with clubs and goads.
आत्मयूथवियोगश्च वने च नयनादिकम् ४२.
There is separation from one's own herd, and being led away into the forest and elsewhere.
अधरोत्तरभावश्च मरणं राष्ट्रविभ्रमः ४२.
There is the rise and fall of status, death, and the confusion of kingdoms.
अनित्यता प्रभावाणामुच्छ्रयाणां च पातनम् ४२.
There is impermanence of powers, and the downfall of those who have risen high.
निरयादिमनुष्यांतं तस्मात्सर्वं त्यजेद्बुधः ४२.
From hell and so on, up to human existence—therefore, the wise should renounce all this.
तद्वत्सर्वमिदं लोके दुःखं दुःखेन शाम्यति ४२.
In the same way, all this suffering in the world is ended only by suffering.
दुःखैराकुलितं ज्ञात्वा निर्वेदं परमाप्नुयात् ४२.
Knowing that everything is afflicted by suffering, one should attain supreme dispassion.
ज्ञानेन तं परं ज्ञात्वा विष्णुं मुक्तिमवाप्नुयात् ४२.
Knowing that Supreme by knowledge, one attains liberation in Viṣṇu.
राजहंसो यथा शुद्धः काकामेध्यप्रदर्शकः ४२.
Just as the royal swan is pure and discerns filth shown by crows,
अविद्यायनमत्युग्रं नानाकर्मातिशाखिनम् ४२.
So too, ignorance is exceedingly fierce, with many branches of various actions.
मोहांधकारतिमिरं लोभव्यालसरीसृपम् ४२.
It is the darkness of delusion, a thicket of serpents of greed.
तदतीत्य महादुर्गं प्रविष्टोऽस्मि महद्वनम् ४२.
Having crossed that great fortress, I have entered the great forest.
न च बिभ्यति केषांचिन्नास्य बिभ्यति केचन॥ ४२.
And there are some who do not fear it, nor does anyone fear it.
तस्मिन्वने सप्तमहाद्रुमास्तु सप्तैव नद्यश्च फलानि सप्त ४२.
In that forest, there are seven great trees, seven rivers, and seven kinds of fruits.
पंचवर्णानि दिव्यानि चतुर्वर्णानि कानिचित् ४२.
There are five divine colors, and some are of four colors.
