नास्ति मृत्युसमस्रासः सर्वेषामपि देहिनाम् ४२.
There is no fear equal to death for all embodied beings.
आबद्धानि स्नेहपाशैर्मृत्युः सर्वाणि कृंतति ४२.
Death severs all bonds tied by cords of affection.
जनाः शतायुषः पंचभवंति न भवन्ति वा ४२.
People may live a hundred years, five may attain it, or may not.
परमायुः स्थिता षष्टिस्तदप्यस्ति न निष्ठितम् ४२.
The highest lifespan is set at sixty, yet even that is not fixed.
तस्यार्धमायुषो रात्रिर्हरते मृत्युरूपिणी ४२.
Death, in the form of night, takes away half of that lifespan.
वर्षाणां विंशतिर्याति धर्मकामार्थवर्जितः ४२.
Twenty years pass without pursuit of righteousness, desire, or wealth.
ह्रियतेर्द्धं हि तत्रापि यच्छेषं तद्धि जीवितम् ४२.
Half of what remains is lost to shame; whatever is left, that is life.
जायते योनिकोटीषु मृतः कर्मवशात्पुनः ४२.
One who dies is born again in countless wombs, according to karma.
मरणं तद्विनिर्द्दिष्टं न नाशः परमार्थतः ४२.
Death is thus prescribed, but in truth, there is no annihilation.
यद्दुःखं मरणं जंतोर्न तस्येहोपमा क्वचित् ४२.
There is no comparison anywhere to the suffering of death for a creature.
मण्डूक इव सर्पेण गीर्यते मृत्युना जनः ४२.
A person is swallowed by death like a frog by a snake.
निःश्वसन्दीर्घमुष्णं च मुकेन परिशुष्यता ४२.
Breathing becomes long and hot, and the mouth dries up.
संमूढः क्षिपतेत्यर्थं हस्तपादावितस्ततः ४२.
Confused, he throws himself, measuring with his hands and feet.
विवस्त्रो मुक्तलज्जश्च विष्ठानुलेपितः ४२.
He is unclothed, devoid of shame, smeared with excrement.
चिंतयानः स्ववित्तानि कस्यैतानि मृते मयि ४२.
He reflects on his wealth, thinking, 'Whose will these be when I am dead?'
म्रियते पश्यतामेव गले घुर्घुररावकृत् ४२.
He dies while others watch, making a rattling sound in his throat.
संप्राप्योत्तरमंशेन देहं त्यजति पूर्वकम् ४२.
Having reached the upper part, he abandons the body from its former state.
क्षणिकं मरणे दुःखमनंतं प्रार्थनाकृतम् ४२.
The suffering at death is momentary, but endless desires are produced.
न परः प्रार्थयेद्भूयस्तृष्णा लाघवकारणम् ४२.
One should not wish for more; craving arises from trivial causes.
निसर्गात्सर्वभूतानामिति दुःखपरंपरा ४२.
By nature, for all beings, there is a succession of suffering.
स चान्नौषधिलेपेन क्षणमात्रं प्रशाम्यति ४२.
With food and medicine applied, it subsides for only a moment.
तयाभिभूतो म्रियते यथान्यैर्व्याधिभिर्न्नरः ४२.
Overcome by it, a man dies just as with other diseases.
सर्वमाभरणं भारं सर्वमालेपनं मम ४२.
All ornaments are burdens, all ointments are mine.
इत्येवं राज्यसंभोगैः कुतः सौख्यं विचारतः ४२.
Thus, considering the enjoyments of kingship, where is happiness?
प्रायेण श्रीमदालेपान्नहुषाद्या महानृपाः ४२.
Mostly, from the pride of wealth, great kings like Nahusha are ruined.
उपर्युपरि देवानामन्योन्यातिशये स्थितम् ४२.
Above and above, among the gods, each surpasses the other.
न चान्यत्क्रियते कर्म सोऽत्र दोषः सुदारुणः ४२.
No other action is performed; this fault here is most terrible.
पुण्यमूलक्षये तद्वत्पातयंति दिवौकसः ४२.
When the root of merit is exhausted, the gods fall in the same way.
तथा नारकिणां दुःखं प्रसिद्धं किं च वर्ण्यते ४२.
Likewise, the suffering of those in hell is well known; what more can be described?
कुठारैश्ठेदनं तीव्रं वल्कलानां च तक्षणम् ४२.
There is intense cutting with axes and the splitting of bark garments.
