तृड्बुभुक्षापरीतांगः क्वचित्तिष्ठति रारटन् ४२.
Afflicted by thirst and hunger, sometimes the body remains, crying out.
कौमारे कर्णवेधेन मातापित्रोर्विताडनैः ४२.
In childhood, there is pain from ear-piercing and from the beatings of mother and father.
प्रमत्तेंद्रियवृत्तैश्च कामरागप्रपीडनात् ४२.
With uncontrolled sense activities and the torment of desire and passion, there is suffering.
ईर्ष्यया सुमहद्दुःखं मोहाद्रक्तस्य जायते ४२.
From jealousy arises very great pain, and from delusion, for one who is passionate.
न रात्रौ विंदते निद्रा कामाग्निपरिखेदितः ४२.
Tormented by the fire of desire, he does not find sleep at night.
नारीषु त्वनुभूतासु सर्वदोषाश्रयासु च ४२.
In women who have been experienced, and who are the abode of all faults—
सन्मानमपमानेन वियोगेनेष्टसंगमः ४२.
Honor is lost through insult, and union with the beloved is broken by separation.
वलीपलितकायेन शिथिलीकृतविग्रहः ४२.
With a body marked by wrinkles and gray hair, the form becomes weakened.
स्त्रीपुंसोर्यौवनं रूपं यदन्योन्याश्रयं पुरा ४२.
The youth and beauty of man and woman, which once depended on each other—
जराभिभूतःपुरुषः पत्नीपुत्रादिबांधवैः ४२.
A man overcome by old age is abandoned by wife, sons, and other relatives.
धर्ममर्थं च कामं च मोक्षं च नातुरो यतः ४२.
He who is afflicted cannot pursue dharma, wealth, desire, or liberation.
वातपित्तकफादीनां वैषम्यं व्याधिरुच्यते ४२.
An imbalance of wind, bile, and phlegm is called disease.
तस्माद्व्याधिमयं ज्ञेयं शरीरमिदमात्मनः ४२.
Therefore, this body of oneself should be understood as full of disease.
तानि न स्वात्मवेद्यानि किमन्यत्कथयाम्यहम् ४२.
These are not known by one's own self; what else should I say?
तत्रैकः कालसंयुक्तः शेषास्त्वागंतवः स्मृताः ४२.
Among them, one is joined with time; the rest are considered to be avoidable.
जपहोमप्रदानैश्च कालमृत्युर्न शाम्यति ४२.
Neither recitation, offering, nor gifts can pacify death that comes with time.
विषाणि चाभिचाराश्च मृत्योर्द्वाराणि देहिनाम् ४२.
Poisons and sorceries are gates of death for embodied beings.
स्वस्थीकर्तुं न शक्नोति कालप्राप्तं हि देहिनम् ४२.
No one can restore to health a being whose time has arrived.
शक्नुवंति परित्रातुं नरं कालेन पीडितम् ४२.
Some are able to protect a person afflicted by time.
कालमृत्युरपि प्राज्ञैर्नीयते नापि संयुतैः ४२.
Even the wise cannot divert death that comes with time, nor those joined with it.
नास्ति मृत्युसमस्रासः सर्वेषामपि देहिनाम् ४२.
There is no fear equal to death for all embodied beings.
आबद्धानि स्नेहपाशैर्मृत्युः सर्वाणि कृंतति ४२.
Death severs all bonds tied by cords of affection.
जनाः शतायुषः पंचभवंति न भवन्ति वा ४२.
People may live a hundred years, five may attain it, or may not.
परमायुः स्थिता षष्टिस्तदप्यस्ति न निष्ठितम् ४२.
The highest lifespan is set at sixty, yet even that is not fixed.
तस्यार्धमायुषो रात्रिर्हरते मृत्युरूपिणी ४२.
Death, in the form of night, takes away half of that lifespan.
वर्षाणां विंशतिर्याति धर्मकामार्थवर्जितः ४२.
Twenty years pass without pursuit of righteousness, desire, or wealth.
ह्रियतेर्द्धं हि तत्रापि यच्छेषं तद्धि जीवितम् ४२.
Half of what remains is lost to shame; whatever is left, that is life.
जायते योनिकोटीषु मृतः कर्मवशात्पुनः ४२.
One who dies is born again in countless wombs, according to karma.
मरणं तद्विनिर्द्दिष्टं न नाशः परमार्थतः ४२.
Death is thus prescribed, but in truth, there is no annihilation.
यद्दुःखं मरणं जंतोर्न तस्येहोपमा क्वचित् ४२.
There is no comparison anywhere to the suffering of death for a creature.
