स्वदेहाशुचिगंधेन न विरज्यति यो नरः ४२.
Yet, the man does not turn away from the foul odor of his own body.
गन्धलेपापनोदार्थं शौचं देहस्य कीर्तितम् ४२.
Purification of the body is described for the removal of foul smells and for cleanliness.
गंगातोयेन सर्वेण मृद्भारैः पर्वतोपमैः ४२.
Even with all the water of the Ganges and heaps of clay as large as mountains,
तीर्थस्नानैस्तपोभिर्वा दुष्टात्मा नैव शुध्यति ४२.
The wicked soul is not purified by bathing at holy places or by austerities.
अंतर्भावप्रदुष्टस्य विशतोऽपि हुताशनम् ४२.
Even if he enters the fire, one whose inner disposition is corrupted is not purified.
भावशुद्धिः परं शौचं प्रमाणं सर्वकर्मसु ४२.
Purity of disposition is the supreme cleanliness and the standard in all actions.
अन्यथैव स्तनं पुत्रश्चिंतयत्यन्यथा पतिः ४२.
The breast is regarded differently by the child, and differently by the husband.
भावतः संविशुद्धात्मा स्वर्गं मोक्षं च विंदति ४२.
One whose mind is purified by disposition attains heaven and liberation.
अविद्यारागविण्मूत्रलेपगंधविशोधनम् ४२.
It is cleansed of the stench and stains of ignorance, attachment, urine, and excrement.
त्वङ्मात्रसारनिःसारं कदलीसारसंनिभम् ४२.
Its essence is merely skin, without substance, like the core of a plantain tree.
स निष्क्रामति संसारे दृढग्राही स तिष्ठति ४२.
One who is firmly attached remains in saṃsāra; one who departs is freed.
पुंसामज्ञातदोषेण नानाकर्मवशेन च ४२.
Because of the faults unknown to man and the force of various actions,
यथा जरायुणा देही दुःखं तिष्ठति वेष्टितः ४२.
Just as the embodied soul, wrapped in the membrane, endures suffering,
गर्भोदकेन सिक्तांगस्तथाऽऽस्ते व्याकुलः पुमान् ४२.
So too does a man, his limbs soaked in amniotic fluid, remain distressed.
गर्भकुम्भे तथा क्षिप्तः पच्यते जठराग्निना ४२.
Cast into the womb, he is cooked by the fire of the belly.
यद्दुःखं जायते तस्य तद्गर्भेऽष्टगुणं भवेत् ४२.
Whatever suffering arises for him, in the womb it becomes eightfold.
चरस्थिराणां सर्वेषामात्मगर्भानुरूपतः ४२.
For all moving and unmoving beings, it is according to the nature of their own womb.
मृतश्चाहं पुनर्जातो जातश्चाहं पुनर्मृतः ४२.
I have died and been born again; having been born, I have died again.
अधुना जातमात्रोऽहं प्राप्तसंस्कार एव च ४२.
Now I am just born, and have already received the rites of passage.
अध्येष्यामि हरेर्ज्ञानं संसारविनिवर्तनम् ४२.
I will study the knowledge of Hari, which brings release from saṃsāra.
गभात्कोटिगुणं दुःखं जायमानस्य जायते ४२.
For one being born, the suffering is a crore times greater than in the womb.
स्पृष्टमात्रस्य बाह्येन वायुना मूढता भवेत् ४२.
As soon as he is touched by the outside air, confusion arises.
स्मृतिभ्रंशात्ततस्तस्य पूर्वकर्मवशेन च ४२.
Then, due to loss of memory and the force of previous actions,
रक्तो मूढश्च लोकोयमकार्ये संप्रवर्तते ४२.
He becomes attached and deluded, and engages in improper actions in the world.
न श्रृणोति परं श्रेयः सति चक्षुषि नेक्षते ४२.
He does not hear the highest good, nor does he see it even when he has eyes.
सत्यां बुद्धौ न जानाति बोध्यमानो बुधैरपि ४२.
Even when his intellect is sound, he does not know, though instructed even by the wise.
गर्भस्मृतेरभावेन शास्त्रमुक्तं महर्षिभिः ४२.
Because of the absence of memory from the womb, the scriptures as declared by the great sages are to be relied upon.
ये शास्त्रज्ञाने सत्यस्मिन्सर्वकर्मार्थसाधके ४२.
Those who possess true knowledge of scripture, which is the means to accomplish all actions, are indeed established in truth.
अव्यक्तेन्द्रियवृत्तित्वाद्बाल्ये दुःखं महत्पुनः ४२.
In childhood, due to the unmanifest activity of the senses, there is again great suffering.
दंतोत्थाने महद्दुःखं मौलेन व्याधिना तथा ४२.
When teeth emerge, there is great pain, as well as from head ailments and disease.
