जजाप परमं जाप्यं नान्यत्र कुरुते श्रमम् ४२.
He recited the supreme chant, and made no effort elsewhere.
दार्यमाणेन मनसा तनयं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ४२.
With a mind torn by sorrow, she spoke these words to her son.
नार्यास्तस्या नृलोकेऽत्र वरैवाजननिः स्फुटम् ४२.
Among women in this world, there is certainly no one more blessed with sons.
पिंगेयं कृतपुण्या वै यस्याः पुत्रा महागुणाः ४२.
This Piṅgā is truly meritorious, whose sons possess great virtues.
तदहं पुत्र दुर्भाग्या महीसागरसंगमे त्वमप्येवं महामौनी नन्द भक्तो हरेश्चिरम्॥ ४२.
Therefore, my son, I am unfortunate at the meeting of earth and ocean; you too, O Nanda, are a great silent one, long devoted to Hari.
इति मातुर्वचः श्रुत्वा प्रहसन्नैतरेयकः॥ ४२.
Hearing his mother's words, the son of Itarā smiled.
ध्यात्वा मुहुर्तं धर्मज्ञो मातरं प्रणतोऽब्रवीत् ४२.
After meditating for a moment, the knower of dharma, bowing, spoke to his mother.
अशोच्ये शोचसि शुभे शोच्ये नैवाऽपि शोचसि ४२.
You grieve for one who is not to be grieved for, O auspicious one, and do not grieve for one who should be grieved for.
मूर्खाचरितमेतद्धि मन्मातुरुचितं न हि ४२.
This conduct is foolish, mother; it is not fitting for you.
प्रपश्यंति यथा रात्रौ खद्योतं दीपवत्स्थितम् ४२.
Just as people see a firefly at night as if it were a lamp.
एवंविधं हि मानुऽयमा गर्भादिति कष्टदम् अस्थिपट्टतुलास्तम्भे स्नायुबन्धेन यंत्रिते॥ ४२.
Such is the human womb—painful and difficult, bound within the framework of bones and joints, held together by sinews.
रक्तमांसमदालिप्ते विण्मूत्रद्रव्यभाजने ४२.
Smeared with blood and flesh, it is a vessel for the substances of excrement and urine.
वदनैकमहाद्वारे षड्गवाक्षवितभूषिते ४२.
With a single large opening for the mouth, adorned with six limbs, eyes, and other features.
नाडीस्वेदप्रवाहे च कालवक्त्रानलस्थिते ४२.
Within it, channels flow with sweat, and it is situated in the mouth of time’s fire.
गुणत्रयमयी भार्या प्रकृतिस्तस्य तत्र च ४२.
His wife is composed of the three qualities; nature is present there as well.
अपत्यान्यस्य हा कष्टमेवं मूढः प्रवर्तते ४२.
Yet, the deluded man acts for offspring, though it is difficult and painful.
स्रोतांसि यस्य सततं प्रस्रवंति गिरेरिव ४२.
His channels constantly flow, like streams from a mountain.
सर्वाशुचिनिधानस्य शरीरस्य न विद्यते ४२.
There is nothing pure in this body, which is a repository of all impurities.
स्पृष्ट्वा स्वदेहस्रोतांसि मृत्तोयैः शोध्यते करः ४२.
After touching the channels of his own body, the hand is cleansed with clay and water.
कायः सुगन्धतोयाद्यैर्यत्नेनापि सुसंस्कृतः ४२.
Even with effort, the body is carefully prepared with fragrant water and other means.
स्वदेहाशुचिगंधेन न विरज्यति यो नरः ४२.
Yet, the man does not turn away from the foul odor of his own body.
गन्धलेपापनोदार्थं शौचं देहस्य कीर्तितम् ४२.
Purification of the body is described for the removal of foul smells and for cleanliness.
गंगातोयेन सर्वेण मृद्भारैः पर्वतोपमैः ४२.
Even with all the water of the Ganges and heaps of clay as large as mountains,
तीर्थस्नानैस्तपोभिर्वा दुष्टात्मा नैव शुध्यति ४२.
The wicked soul is not purified by bathing at holy places or by austerities.
अंतर्भावप्रदुष्टस्य विशतोऽपि हुताशनम् ४२.
Even if he enters the fire, one whose inner disposition is corrupted is not purified.
भावशुद्धिः परं शौचं प्रमाणं सर्वकर्मसु ४२.
Purity of disposition is the supreme cleanliness and the standard in all actions.
अन्यथैव स्तनं पुत्रश्चिंतयत्यन्यथा पतिः ४२.
The breast is regarded differently by the child, and differently by the husband.
भावतः संविशुद्धात्मा स्वर्गं मोक्षं च विंदति ४२.
One whose mind is purified by disposition attains heaven and liberation.
अविद्यारागविण्मूत्रलेपगंधविशोधनम् ४२.
It is cleansed of the stench and stains of ignorance, attachment, urine, and excrement.
त्वङ्मात्रसारनिःसारं कदलीसारसंनिभम् ४२.
Its essence is merely skin, without substance, like the core of a plantain tree.
