पतितानां च संभाषे कुर्यादाचमनिक्रियाम् ४१.
When conversing with those who are fallen, one should perform the rite of ācamana.
धर्मतो धनमाहार्य यष्टव्यं चापि यत्नतः त्वंकारो वा वधो वापि गुरूणामुभयं समम्॥ ४१.
Wealth should be acquired righteously and sacrifices performed with care; whether it is a rebuke or even the death of a teacher, both are equal.
सत्यं वाच्यं नित्यमैत्रेण भाव्यं कार्यं त्याज्यं नित्यमायासकारि ४१.
One should always speak the truth, maintain constant friendship, and always abandon actions that bring distress.
तीर्थस्नानैः सोपवासैर्व्रतैश्च पात्रे दानैर्होमजप्यैश्चयज्ञैः ४१.
Through bathing at sacred places, fasting, vows, giving gifts to the worthy, offerings, recitation, and sacrifices—
यत्रापि कुर्वतो नात्मा जुगुप्सामेति पार्थिव ४१.
—in all these, O King, the self of the one performing them does not incur reproach.
इति ते वै समुद्देशः कीर्तितः किंचिदेव च ४१.
Thus, only a portion of the instruction has been related to you.
एवमाचरतो धर्मं महेशस्य गृहे सतः ४१.
Thus, by practicing dharma in the house of Maheśa—
एवं नानाविधान्धर्मान्महाकालस्य फाल्गुन ४१.
—so too, O Phālguna, are the various kinds of dharmas of Mahākāla.
यावत्पश्यंति ये तत्र समाजग्मुः श्रृणुष्व तान् ४१.
Hear now of those who assembled there and witnessed it.
इंद्रादयस्तथा देवा वसिष्ठाद्या मुनीश्वराः ४१.
The gods beginning with Indra, and the great sages beginning with Vasiṣṭha, likewise—
तान्महेशमुखान्सर्वान्महाकालो महामतिः ४१.
All of them, headed by Maheśa, were addressed by Mahākāla, the great-minded one.
ततो ब्रह्मादिभिर्देवैर्वरे रत्नमयासने ४१.
Then, by Brahmā and the other gods, on a splendid throne made of jewels—
ततो देव्या समालिंग्य नीत्वोत्संगं स्वकं मुदा ४१.
Then, embracing the goddess, he joyfully took her onto his own lap.
उक्तञ्च यावद्ब्रह्माण्डमिदमास्ते शिवव्रत ४१.
And it was declared: as long as this universe exists, the vow of Śiva remains.
देवेन च वरो दत्तस्त्वल्लिंगं योऽर्चयिष्यति ४१.
And the god granted this boon: whoever worships your liṅga—
दर्शनं स्तवनं पूजा प्रणामश्च ततो जपः ४१.
—by seeing, praising, worshipping, bowing, and then reciting—
इत्युक्ते विस्मिता देवाः साधु साध्विति ते जगुः ४१.
When this was spoken, the gods, astonished, exclaimed, 'Excellent! Excellent!'
ततः सुरैःस्तूयमानो वंद्यमानश्च चारणैः ४१.
Then, praised by the gods and honored by the celestial bards,
कोटिकोटिगणैश्चैव स्तुवद्भिः सर्वतो वृतः॥ ४१.
Surrounded on all sides by countless millions singing his praises,
महाकालो रुद्रभवनं गतो भवपुरस्सरः ४१.
Mahākāla, with Bhava at the forefront, went to Rudra's abode.
कूपश्चापि सरः पुण्यं महाकालस्य सिद्धिदम् ४१.
There is also a sacred well and lake of Mahākāla, bestowing success.
महाकालः समालिंग्य ताञ्छिवाय निवेदयेत् ४१.
Mahākāla, embracing them, presented them to Śiva.
दृष्टं स्पृष्टं पूजितं च गतास्ते भवसद्म तत् एवमेतानि लिंगानि सप्त जातानि फाल्गुन॥ ४१.
'Seen, touched, and worshipped, you have reached Bhava's abode.' Thus, O Phālguna, these seven liṅgas came into being.
ये श्रृण्वंति गृणंत्येतत्तेपि धन्या नरोत्तमाः॥ ४१.
Those noble men who hear and recite this too are blessed.
ततो मया स्थापिते च स्थाने कालांतरेण ह ४२.
Then, after I had established it in its place, in the course of time—
वासुदेवविहीनं हि तीर्थमेतन्न रोचते ४२.
This holy place, without Vāsudeva, does not please me.
यत्र नैव हरिः स्वामी तीर्थे गेहेऽथ मानसे ४२.
Where Hari, the Lord, is not present—whether in a holy place, a house, or the mind—
तस्मात्प्रसाद्य वरदं तीर्थेऽस्मिन्पुरुषोत्तमम् ४२.
Therefore, having propitiated the boon-giver, the Supreme Person, at this holy place—
इति संचिंत्य कौरव्य ततोऽहं चात्र संस्थितः ४२.
Thinking thus, O Kauravya, I then remained here.
अष्टाक्षरं जपन्मंत्रं संनिगृह्येंद्रियाणि च ४२.
Reciting the eight-syllabled mantra and restraining my senses,
