The earth appeared as if smeared with saffron, and the directions seemed tinged with vermilion.
The radiance filled the entire interior of the cosmic egg, as if it were its shell.
Thus, as that pillar of brilliance kept growing,
Seeing that wondrous linga of light, they abandoned their mutual anger.
Is this, having pierced the earth, from the hoods of Śeṣa and the other serpents?
Or is it the sun, manifesting as at the end of a kalpa, which is easily seen then?
Or perhaps, from the friction of clouds, has it spread through the middle of the sky?
Is it, with its rays, constantly repelling the power of your eyes?
Even though it is blazing, it does not cause any burning.
By the transmission of its radiance, not only the world,
From where has this arisen? What is its root, what is its cause?
How far does its extent reach, in all directions, across and above?
Thus, the mind is repeatedly restless to know all this.
Thus, overwhelmed by the weight of these thoughts, from gazing at the pillar of light,
Govinda spoke, even more proudly,
Truly, a test has now presented itself for examination.
Of this mass of radiance, whose extent cannot be determined,
Whoever could see either its root or its tip—of this self-existent light—
By their rivalry, both became possessed of exceedingly great energy, each striving with determination against the other.
Brahmā approached that foremost place, resolved to see it.
Viṣṇu, steadfast in form, assumed the shape of a boar.
Recognizing its root, he became eager to return.
Turning downward, he split the earth with his snout.
Filling the space with the harsh sound of his playful grunt.
Wherever he entered, there he found it established in the same way.
Through the earth's fissures, serpents became visible.
He saw it standing like the root-bulb of the golden mountain.
From afar, the earth's ankles were seen, steadfast in bearing the burden.
There too was seen the great frog, and the enemy of Madhu.
The Unmanifest also beheld her sustaining power.
