पादौ प्रसारयेन्नैव गुरुदेवाग्निसंमुखौ ४१.
One should not stretch out the feet towards the teacher, the gods, or the fire.
विद्याधिकं गुरुं वृद्धं कुर्यादेतान्प्रदक्षिणान्॥ ४१.
One should circumambulate those who are learned, teachers, or elders who possess greater knowledge.
आहारनीहारविहारयोगाः सुसंवृता धर्मविदानुकार्याः ४१.
Food, mist, recreation, and yoga should be properly regulated, following the conduct prescribed by those who know dharma.
उभे मूत्रपुरीषे तु दिवा कुर्यादुदङ्मुखः ४१.
During the day, one should pass both urine and feces facing north.
प्रत्यग्निं प्रति सूर्यं च प्रति गां व्रतिनं प्रति ४१.
Not facing fire, the sun, the earth, or an ascetic.
भोजने शयने स्थाने उत्सर्गे मलमूत्रयोः ४१.
Not at the place of eating, sleeping, standing, or where urine and feces are disposed.
न नद्यां मेहनं कुर्यान्न श्मशाने नभस्मनि ४१.
One should not urinate in a river, nor in a cremation ground, nor in the open sky.
उद्धृत्ताभिस्तथाद्भिस्तु शौचं कुर्याद्विचक्षणः ४१.
A discerning person should perform cleansing with earth that is freshly dug or brought.
अपविद्धापशौचाश्च वर्जयेत्पंच मृत्तिकाः ४१.
One should avoid five types of earth that are discarded or impure.
नात्मानं ताडयेन्नैव दद्याद्दुः खेभ्य एव च ४१.
One should not strike oneself, nor give pain to the senses.
रक्षेद्दारांस्त्यजेदीष्यां तासु निष्कारणं बुधः ४१.
He should protect his wives, abandon jealousy, and not leave them without reason, being wise.
अद्रोहेणैव भूतानामल्पद्रोहेण वा पुनः ४१.
One should not harm living beings, or only cause the least possible harm.
नेर्ष्युः स्यान्न कृतघ्नः स्यान्न परद्रोहकर्मधीः ४१.
He should not be envious, nor ungrateful, nor intent on harming others.
न च वागङ्गचपलो न चाशिष्टस्य गोचरः ४१.
He should not be fickle in speech or body, nor pursue what is improper.
उपायैः साधयेदर्थान्दण्डस्त्वगतिका गतिः ४१.
He should accomplish his aims by appropriate means; punishment is the last resort when there is no other way.
अंतरेण न गच्छेन द्वयोर्ज्वलनलिंगयोः ४१.
One should not pass between two blazing fires.
न सूर्यव्योमयोर्नैव हरस्य वृषभस्य च ४१.
Nor between the sun and the sky, nor between Shiva and his bull.
नैकवस्त्रश्च भुंजीत नाग्नौ होममथाचरेत् ४१.
One should not eat wearing only one garment, nor perform a fire offering in such a state.
खंडनं पेषणं मार्ष्टिं जलसंशोधनं तथा ४१.
Breaking, grinding, cleaning, and purifying water—
कार्यारंभं समाप्तिं च वचः प्रोच्य तथा प्रियम् ४१.
Beginning and completion of tasks, speaking, and likewise what is dear—
शुचित्वं च जपं स्थाणुं यः कुर्याद्विंशतिं तथा ४१.
Whoever, with purity, recites the japa and stands firm for twenty times in this way—
स वै रुद्रमयो भूत्वा ततश्चांते शिवं व्रजेत् ४१.
He, having become endowed with Rudra’s essence, at the end attains Śiva.
मातः स्वसरथो पुत्रि आर्येति च वदेद्बुधः ४१.
A wise person should address as ‘Mother’, ‘With her own chariot’, ‘Daughter’, and ‘Noble lady’.
नेन्दुं न तारकाश्चैव नादयेन्नात्मनः शिरः ४१.
He should not point to the moon, nor to the stars, nor touch his own head.
दुर्जयो हींद्रियग्रामो मुह्यते पंडितोऽपि सन् ४१.
Indeed, the group of senses is hard to conquer; even a learned man becomes deluded.
आसनं कल्पयेत्तस्य कुर्यात्पादाभिवंदनम् ४१.
He should prepare a seat for him and offer reverent salutation to his feet.
शिरस्यगस्त्यमाधाय तथैव च पुरंदरम् ४१.
He should place Agastya on his head, and likewise Purandara.
नाप्सु मूत्रं पुरीषं वा मैथुनं वा समाचरेत् ४१.
He should not pass urine, feces, or engage in intercourse in water.
पितॄणां च ततः शेषं भोक्तुं माहेश्वरोऽर्हति ४१.
Afterwards, a devotee of Maheśvara is entitled to partake of what remains from the offerings to the ancestors.
अन्तर्जानुश्च तच्चित्तो भुञ्जीतान्नमकुत्सयन् ४१.
With his mind focused within, and his knees drawn up, he should eat food without disdain.
