भविष्यं विक्रमादित्यराज्यं सोऽथ प्रलप्स्यते ४०.
He will then obtain the kingdom of Vikramāditya in the future.
ततः शतसहस्रेषु शतेनाप्यधिकेषु च ४०.
After one hundred thousand and one hundred years have passed,
ततस्त्रिषु सहस्रेषु षट्शतैरधिकेषु च ४०.
Then, after three thousand and six hundred years,
विष्णोरंशो धर्मपाता बुधः साक्षात्स्वयं प्रभुः ४०.
A portion of Viṣṇu, the upholder of righteousness, Budha himself, the Lord, will appear.
ज्योतिर्बिदुमुखानुग्रान्स हनिष्यति कोटिशः ४०.
He will destroy, by the hundreds of millions, those who are hostile to the wise and the learned.
भक्तेभ्यः स्वयशो मुक्त्वा दिवं पश्चाद्गमिष्यति ४०.
Having left his own fame to the devotees, he will afterwards ascend to heaven.
ततो वक्ष्यंति तं भक्त्या सर्वपापहरं बुधम् ४०.
Then, with devotion, they will proclaim him, Budha, the remover of all sins.
साधिकेषु महान्राजा प्रमितिः प्रभविष्यति ४०.
When that time is fulfilled, the great king Pramiti will become powerful.
म्लेच्छान्स कोटिशो हत्वा पाषंडानि च सर्वशः ४०.
He will slay the mlecchas by the tens of millions, and all the heretics as well.
गंगायमुनयोर्मध्ये निष्ठां यास्यति पार्थिवः ४०.
The king will establish his dominion between the Ganga and Yamuna rivers.
घोरं वा धर्ममाश्रित्य शाठ्येन च भवंति ताः ४०.
They will adopt a fierce form of dharma, and act with deceitfulness.
उपहिंसंति चान्योन्यं व्याकुलाः श्रमपीडिताः ४०.
They will harm one another, distressed and afflicted by exhaustion.
निर्मर्यादा निष्करुणा निस्स्नेहा निरपत्रपाः ४०.
Without boundaries, without compassion, without affection, and without shame.
हाहाभूताश्चरिष्यंति विषादव्याकुलेंद्रियाः ४०.
Overwhelmed with grief, they will wander, their senses disturbed by sorrow.
प्रत्यंतांस्ता निषेवंति हित्वा जनपदान्स्वकान् ४०.
They will inhabit the borderlands, abandoning their own settlements.
मांसैर्मूलफलैस्चैव वर्तयंति सुदुःखिताः ४०.
Deeply afflicted, they will subsist on meat, roots, and fruits.
धर्मस्य वासमात्रं च शाल्वो म्लेच्छो हनिष्यति ४०.
Shalva, the mleccha, will destroy even the last remnant of dharma.
ततस्तस्य वधार्थाय विष्णुः साक्षाज्जगत्पतिः ४०.
Then, for the purpose of his destruction, Vishnu himself, Lord of the world, will appear.
द्विजोत्तमैः परिवृतः शाल्वं तं संहरिष्यति ४०.
Surrounded by the foremost twice-born, he will annihilate Shalva.
पालयिष्यति तं धर्मं यो धर्मः श्रुतिपूर्वकः॥ ४०.
He will protect that dharma which is rooted in the scriptures.
कृत्वा पोतं धर्मरूपं साधूनां परमेश्वरः ४०.
Having fashioned a vessel in the form of dharma for the virtuous, the Supreme Lord—
ततः कृतयुगं भूयः प्रवर्तिष्यति पार्थिव ४०.
Then, O king, the Krita age will once again commence.
अष्टाविंशकलिश्चैव शेषः प्रावर्त अन्यतः ४०.
The remaining twenty-eight Kali cycles will begin elsewhere.
मरुराजाच्च देवापेः श्रुतदेवाच्च ब्राह्मणाः चतुर्युगे च ते धन्या ये भजंति हराच्युतौ॥ ४०.
From King Maru, from Devapi, and from Shrutadeva, the Brahmanas— blessed are those in the four ages who worship Hara and Achyuta.
केचिच्छिवं समाश्रित्य विष्णुमाश्रित्य वेधसम् ४१.
Some take refuge in Shiva, some in Vishnu, and some in the Creator.
अपारवैभवा देवास्त्रयोऽप्येते नरर्षभ ४१.
These three gods possess boundless glory, O best of men.
पुरा किलैवं मुनयो नैमिषारण्यवासिनः ४१.
Long ago, indeed, the sages dwelling in the Naimisha forest—
तस्मिन्क्षणे विरिंचोऽपि श्लोकं प्रह्वोऽब्रवीत्किल ४१.
At that moment, Brahma, humble, is said to have spoken a verse—
महेशाय च भक्ते द्वौ कृपायेतां सदा मयि ४१.
May Mahesha, and the devoted two, always show compassion to me—
तत्र योगेश्वरः श्लोकं प्रबुध्यन्नमुमब्रवीत् ४१.
There, the lord of yoga, awakening, spoke this verse—
