एतेन श्रुतिशास्त्राणि पुराणं च वृतैव किम् ४०.
By this, the scriptures and the Purāṇa are indeed encompassed—what more is there?
मुग्धाः सर्वेऽभवन्दक्षा ये हि वेदं गता ह्यनु ४०.
All those who followed the Veda without discernment became deluded and lost patience.
तिष्ठंति राजसा मध्ये ह्यधो गच्छंति तामसाः ४०.
Those of rajas remain in the middle; those of tamas go downward.
न चैतदप्य सूयामो यद्भूतेषु शिवो न हि ४०.
Nor should we blame this, for Śiva is not absent from beings.
यथा सुवर्णजातानि भूषणानि बहूनि च ४०.
Just as many ornaments are made from gold,
स्वर्णं सर्वेषु चास्त्येव तथैव स सदाशिवः ४०.
Gold is present in all of them; so too is Sadāśiva always present.
तथेदं शोधितं देहं शुद्धं दिवि व्रजेत्स्फुटम् ४०.
Thus, this purified body, being pure, clearly ascends to heaven.
चेदिदं शोधयेद्देहं नैव ग्राह्यं समंततः ४०.
But if one does not purify this body, it should not be accepted at all.
शुचिः स्यादल्पदिवसात्पाषाणोऽसौ भवेत्स्फुटम् ४०.
He becomes pure in a short time; that stone becomes clearly visible.
साधुवाप्यथवाऽसाधु प्रमाणं नः श्रुतिः परा ४०.
Whether good or not good, our supreme authority is the Veda.
अंगुष्ठेन लिखन्भूमिं चक्रे गर्तं महोत्तमम् ४०.
Scratching the ground with his thumb, he made a great and excellent pit.
अत्यरिच्यत तोयं च चक्रे पादेन संलिखन् ४०.
Water overflowed, and he traced with his foot.
तदद्भुतं महद्दृष्ट्वा नैव विप्रो विसिष्मिये ४०.
Seeing that great and wondrous thing, the Brahmin was not at all astonished.
तच्चित्रेण न जह्याच्च श्रुतिमार्गं सनातनम्॥ ४०.
By that marvel, he did not abandon the eternal path of the Veda.
अतिमूर्खोसि विप्र त्वं प्रज्ञावादांश्च भाषसे कूपोन्यस्य घटोऽन्यस्य रज्जुरन्यस्य भारत॥ ४०.
You are extremely foolish, Brahmin, yet you speak words of wisdom; one has the well, another the pot, another the rope, O descendant of Bharata.
पायंत्यन्ये पिबंत्यन्ये सर्वे ते समभागिनः ४०.
Some draw water, others drink; all of them share equally.
ततो विममृशे श्लोको बहुधा समभागिनाम् ४०.
Then he considered the verse about those who share equally in many ways.
बहुपोतद्रव्यक्षेपः सर्वैः सा समभागिता ४०.
When many contribute vessels and goods, all share equally.
यः शुचिश्च शिवं ध्यायन्प्रासादकूपकर्तरि ४०.
He who is pure and meditates on Shiva, when making a temple or well,
इति निश्चित्य प्रोवाच कालभीतिर्नरं च तम् ४०.
Having thus decided, the one afraid of death spoke to that man.
दृष्ट्वा प्रत्यक्षतो मादृक्कथं पिबति भो वद ४०.
Having seen it directly, tell me, O sir, how does one like me drink?
एवं विनिश्चयं दृष्ट्वास्य स्थिरं कुरुनंदन ४०.
Seeing his firm resolve in this way, O descendant of Kuru,
कालभीतिश्च परमं विस्मयं समुपागतः ४०.
And the one afraid of death was filled with the utmost wonder.
ततश्चिंतयतस्तस्य बिल्वाधस्तात्सुशोभनम् ४०.
Then, as he pondered, beneath the bilva tree, something beautiful appeared.
प्रादुर्भावे ततस्तस्य महालिंगस्य भारत ४०.
Then, O Bharata, there was the manifestation of that great linga.
पारिजातमयीं पुष्पवृष्टिमिंद्रो मुमोच ह ४०.
Indra released a shower of flowers made of parijata blossoms.
तस्मिन्महति कौरव्य वर्तमाने महोत्सवे ४०.
O Kaurava, in that great festival, such a magnificent celebration was taking place.
पापस्य कालं भवपंककालं कलाकलं कालमार्गस्य कालम् ४०.
The time of sin, the time of the mire of existence, the time of art and death, the time of the path of time.
ईशानवक्त्रं प्रणमामि त्वाहं स्तौति श्रुतिः सर्वविद्येश्वरस्त्वम् ४०.
I bow to your face as Īśāna; the Vedas praise you, you are the lord of all knowledge.
यं स्तौति वेदस्तमहं प्रपद्ये तत्पुरुषसंज्ञं शरणं द्वितीयम् ४०.
I seek refuge in him whom the Vedas praise, who is known as Tatpuruṣa, the second.
