तस्मात्त्वमत्र तीर्थे च महाकालमिति स्मृतम् ३९.
Therefore, you are remembered here at this sacred place as Mahakala.
ततः सा रुद्रवाक्येन वरयामास तं पतिम् ३९.
Then, by Rudra’s words, she chose him as her husband.
तत्र तां पार्वती प्राह समालिंग्य प्रहर्षिता ३९.
There, Parvati, delighted, embraced her and spoke.
चित्रलेखेतिनाम्ना त्वं तस्माद्भव सखी मम ३९.
From now on, you shall be my friend, known by the name Citralekha.
ययानिरुद्धः कथित उषायाः पतिरुत्तमः ३९.
By whom Aniruddha was described as the excellent husband of Usha.
अप्सुसा वार्षिकं बिंदुं पूर्णे वर्षशते पपौ ३९.
In the water, she drank a drop of rain that had fallen after a hundred years.
एवंविधा कुमारी सा लिंगमेतद्धि फाल्गुन ३९.
Such was that maiden, O Phalguna; this is the very linga.
तस्मादत्र नृणां दाहश्चास्थिक्षेपश्च भारत ३९.
Therefore, here is the burning of bodies and the casting of bones, O Bharata.
महाकालस्त्वसौ कश्च कथं सिद्धिमुपागतः ४०.
Who indeed is this Mahakala, and how did he attain perfection?
सर्वमेतत्समाख्याहि श्रद्दधानाय पृच्छते॥ ४०.
Tell me all this completely, for I ask with faith.
नमस्कृत्य महाकालं वरदं स्थाणुमव्ययम् ४०.
Having bowed to Mahakala, the bestower of boons, the unchanging Sthanu,
वाराणस्यां पुरि पुरा बभूव जपतां वरः ४०.
Once, in the city of Varanasi, there was the best among those who recite prayers.
तस्यापुत्रस्य पुत्रार्थे रुद्रान्संजपतः किल ४०.
He, being without a son, repeatedly recited the Rudras for the sake of obtaining a son.
मांटे तव सुतो धीमान्मत्प्रभावपराक्रमः ४०.
"In your house, a wise son, endowed with my power and might, will be born."
इति श्रुत्वा रुद्रवचो मांटिर्हर्षं परं गतः ४०.
Hearing these words of Rudra, Manti became greatly delighted.
दधार गर्भं चटिका तपोमूर्तिधरा यथा ४०.
Catika, embodying austerity, conceived a child.
न पुनर्मातुरुदरंत्यक्त्वा निर्गच्छते बहिः ४०.
Once having left the mother's womb, he does not return again.
वत्स सामान्यपुत्रोऽपि पित्रोः सुखकरः सदा ४०.
Child, even an ordinary son always brings happiness to his parents.
वत्स मानुष्यवासस्य स्पृहा तुभ्यं कथं न हि ४०.
Child, why do you not desire to dwell among humans?
कदा मनुष्या जायेम पूजा यत्र महाफला ४०.
When shall we be born as humans, where worship yields great rewards?
इति भूतानि शोचंति नानायोनिगतान्यपि अनादृत्य कथं ब्रूहि स्थितश्चोदर एव च॥ ४०.
Thus, beings grieve, even those born in various wombs; tell me, disregarding this, how do you remain in the womb?
तात जानाम्यहं सर्वमेतत्परम दुर्लभम् ४०.
Dear one, I know all this; it is exceedingly rare.
द्वौ मार्गौ किल वेदेषु प्रोक्तौ कालोऽर्चिरेव च ४०.
Indeed, two paths are spoken of in the Vedas: the path of time and the path of light.
स्वर्गे वा नरके वापि कालमार्गगतो ह्ययम् ४०.
Whether in heaven or in hell, this one follows the path of time.
तस्यैव हेतोः प्रयतेत्कोविदो यन्न दुःखवित् ४०.
For that reason, the wise strive for what does not bring suffering.
तच्चेन्मम मनस्तात नानादोषैर्न मोह्यते ४०.
If my mind, dear one, is not deluded by various faults,
ततस्तस्य पिता पार्थ कांदिशीको महेश्वरम् ४०.
Then his father, Partha, Kāndiśīka, sought Maheshvara.
त्वां विना कोऽपरो देव पुत्रस्याभीष्टदोऽस्ति मे ४०.
Apart from you, O god, who else can grant my son’s wishes?
ततस्तस्यातिभक्त्यासौ प्राह तुष्टो महेश्वरः ४०.
Then, pleased by his great devotion, Maheshvara spoke to him.
विपरीतश्च शीघ्रं भो मांटिपुत्रः प्रबोध्यताम् ४०.
Let Māṇṭi’s son be awakened quickly, though in a contrary manner.
