चतुःषष्टिसहस्राणि कुरुदेशः प्रकीर्तितः ३९.
Sixty-four thousand is declared as the number for the land of the Kurus.
पंच प्राहुस्तथा लक्षान्विदर्भायां च ग्रामकान् ३९.
And five lakhs of villages are said to be in Vidarbha.
सहस्रदशकं चापि सिंहलद्वीपमुच्यते ३९.
Ten thousand is also mentioned for the island of Simhala.
लक्षैकं च तथा प्रोक्तं ग्रामाणां तु भयाणकम् ३९.
One lakh is likewise stated for the villages of Bhayānaka.
षष्टिसहस्राणि तथा ग्रामाणां पांगुदेशकः ३९.
Sixty thousand villages are attributed to the region of Pāṅgu.
पंचविंशतिसाहस्रं मूलस्थानं प्रकीर्तितम् ३९.
Twenty-five thousand is declared as the root place.
चत्वार्येव सहस्राणि पक्षबाहुरुदीर्यते ३९.
Only four thousand are spoken of for Pakṣabāhu.
एवं भरतखंडेऽस्मिन्षण्णवत्येव कोटयः ३९.
Thus, in this land of Bharata, there are indeed ninety crores.
षट्त्रिंशच्च सहस्राणि वेलाकूलानि भारत ३९.
And thirty-six thousand are the coastal regions, O Bhārata.
आत्मीयमपि सा देवी अनिच्छुष्वपि तेषु च ३९.
Even her own possessions, the goddess gave among them, though they did not desire them.
भ्रातॄन्प्रति भगिनी च विचार्यैव ददौ शुभा ३९.
Considering her brothers, the auspicious sister gave to them.
तदा तेषु च देशेषु चतुर्वर्गस्य साधनम् ३९.
Then, in those regions, the means for the four aims of life were established.
तत्रापि गुप्तक्षेत्रं च वेदैतत्सा कुमारिका ३९.
There also, the secret field is known, and this is Kumārikā.
तस्थौ स्नायंती षट्सु चैवापि संगमे ३९.
She remained, bathing at six confluences.
जीर्णे नव्यं स्वर्णमयं प्रासादं साप्यकारयत् ३९.
When the old temple was worn, she built a new one of gold.
कुमारलिंगादुत्थाय प्रत्यक्षस्तामवोचत ३९.
Arising from the Kumāra liṅga, the deity appeared and spoke to her.
जीर्णः पुनरुद्धृतोऽयं प्रासादस्तेन तोषितः ३९.
This temple, once ruined, has been restored; by this, I am pleased.
कर्ता चापि तथोद्धर्ता द्वौ वै समफलौ स्मृतौ ३९.
Both the builder and the restorer are remembered as equally fruitful.
बर्करेशे च ये दत्त वरा दत्ताः सदैव ते ३९.
And whatever boons are given at Barkaresha, those boons are always granted.
अभर्तृकाया नार्याश्च न स्वर्गो मोक्ष एव च ३९.
For a woman without a husband, there is neither heaven nor liberation.
तस्मात्त्वमत्र तीर्थे च महाकालमिति स्मृतम् ३९.
Therefore, you are remembered here at this sacred place as Mahakala.
ततः सा रुद्रवाक्येन वरयामास तं पतिम् ३९.
Then, by Rudra’s words, she chose him as her husband.
तत्र तां पार्वती प्राह समालिंग्य प्रहर्षिता ३९.
There, Parvati, delighted, embraced her and spoke.
चित्रलेखेतिनाम्ना त्वं तस्माद्भव सखी मम ३९.
From now on, you shall be my friend, known by the name Citralekha.
ययानिरुद्धः कथित उषायाः पतिरुत्तमः ३९.
By whom Aniruddha was described as the excellent husband of Usha.
अप्सुसा वार्षिकं बिंदुं पूर्णे वर्षशते पपौ ३९.
In the water, she drank a drop of rain that had fallen after a hundred years.
एवंविधा कुमारी सा लिंगमेतद्धि फाल्गुन ३९.
Such was that maiden, O Phalguna; this is the very linga.
तस्मादत्र नृणां दाहश्चास्थिक्षेपश्च भारत ३९.
Therefore, here is the burning of bodies and the casting of bones, O Bharata.
महाकालस्त्वसौ कश्च कथं सिद्धिमुपागतः ४०.
Who indeed is this Mahakala, and how did he attain perfection?
सर्वमेतत्समाख्याहि श्रद्दधानाय पृच्छते॥ ४०.
Tell me all this completely, for I ask with faith.
