एवं लब्ध्वा वरान्सर्वान्सा पुनः सिंहलं ययौ ३९.
Thus, having obtained all boons, she again went to Siṃhala.
तच्छ्रुत्वा विस्मितो राजा लोकाः सर्वे च फाल्गुन ३९.
Hearing this, O Phālguna, the king and all the people were astonished.
स्नात्वा दत्त्वा च दानानि विविधानि च ते ततः ३९.
After bathing and giving various gifts, they then—
अनिच्छंत्यां कुमार्यां च वरं द्रव्यं च पार्थिवः ३९.
When the maiden was unwilling, the king granted her a boon and wealth.
इदं भारतखंडं च नवधैव विभज्य सः ३९.
He divided this land of Bhārata into nine parts.
तेषां विभेदान्वक्ष्यामि पर्वतैरुपशोभितान् ३९.
I shall declare their divisions, adorned with mountains.
महेन्द्रो मलयः सह्यः शुक्तिमानृक्षपर्वतः ३९.
Mahendra, Malaya, Sahya, Śuktimān, and Ṛkṣa mountains—
महेन्द्रपरतश्चैव इन्द्रद्वीपो निगद्यते ३९.
Beyond Mahendra, indeed, is the region called Indradvīpa.
सहस्रमेकमेकं च सर्वखण्डान्यमूनि च ३९.
Each of these regions is said to be a thousand in number.
वेदस्मृतिमुखा नद्यः पारियात्रोद्भवा मताः ३९.
The rivers originating from Pāriyātra are considered foremost in the Vedas and Smṛtis.
शतद्रूचन्द्रभागाद्या ऋक्षपर्वतसंभवाः ३९.
Śatadrū, Candrabhāgā, and others arise from Ṛkṣa mountain.
तापी पयोष्णी निर्विध्या कावेरी च महीनदी ३९.
Tāpī, Payoṣṇī, Nirvidhā, and the great river Kāverī—
कृतमालाताम्रपर्णीप्रमुखा मलयोद्भवाः ३९.
Kṛtamālā, Tāmraparṇī, and others, headed by these, arise from Malaya.
एवं विभज्य पुत्रेभ्यः कुमार्यै च महीपतिः ३९.
Thus, having divided, the king gave to his sons and to the maiden.
तत्र तप्त्वा तपो घोरं ब्रह्मलोकं जगाम सः ३९.
There, having performed intense austerity, he attained the world of Brahma.
यत्र जातोऽसि कौतेय पांडोस्त्वं सोदरैः सह ३९.
It is there, O son of Kunti, that you were born to Pandu along with your brothers.
खंडोद्भवेन द्रव्येण तेपे दानानि यच्छती ३९.
With wealth arising from the earth, he performed acts of charity.
महावीर्यबलोत्साहा जाता नव नवात्मजाः ३९.
Sons, ever new, were born, endowed with great heroism, strength, and enthusiasm.
कुलदेवी त्वमस्माकं प्रसादं कुरु नः शुभे देही द्वासप्ततीनां नो विभेदः स्याद्यथा न नः॥ ३९.
You are our family goddess; grant us your favor, O auspicious one, so that there may be no division among our seventy-two.
इत्युक्ता सर्वधर्मज्ञा विज्ञाने ब्रह्मणा समा ३९.
Thus addressed, she who knows all dharmas, equal to Brahma in wisdom, replied—
तेषां नामानि ग्रामांश्च पत्तनानि च फाल्गुन ३९.
Their names, O Phalguna, as well as the villages and towns—
कोटिश्चतस्रो ग्रामाणां नीवृदासीच्च मंडले ३९.
In the region of Nivṛda, there are said to be four crores of villages.
सपादकोटिर्ग्रामाणां पुरसाहणके विदुः ३९.
In Purasāhaṇaka, there are known to be one and a quarter crores of villages.
एको लक्षश्च नेपाले ग्रामाणां परिकीर्तितः ३९.
In Nepal, one hundred thousand villages are mentioned.
द्वासप्ततिस्तथा लक्षा ग्रामा गाजणके स्मृताः ३९.
In Gājaṇaka, there are said to be seventy-two hundred thousand villages.
कामरूपे च ग्रामाणां नवलक्षाः प्रकीर्तिताः ३९.
In Kāmarūpa, nine hundred thousand villages are renowned.
नवैव लक्षा ग्रामाणां कांतिपुरे प्रकीर्तिताः ३९.
In Kāntipura, likewise, nine hundred thousand villages are mentioned.
ओड्डियाणे तथा देशे नवलक्षाः प्रकीर्तिताः ३९.
In the land of Oḍḍiyāṇa, too, nine hundred thousand villages are spoken of.
लोहपूरे तथा देशे लक्षाः प्रोक्ता नवैव च ३९.
In the land of Lohapūra, likewise, exactly nine hundred thousand villages are declared.
ग्रामाणां सप्तलक्षं च रटराजे प्रकीर्तितम् ३९.
In the kingdom of Raṭa, seven hundred thousand villages are mentioned.
