पुलस्त्यपुलहाभ्यां च जज्ञिरे यक्षराक्षसाः
From Pulastya and Pulaha were born the Yakshas and Rakshasas.
भृगोरग्निः समुदभूच्च्यवनाद्यास्तथर्षयः यत्पुत्रपौत्रैर्भुवनमिदमापूर्यतेऽखिलम्
From Bhṛgu came Agni, and likewise Cyavana and other sages, whose sons and grandsons fill this entire world.
एवं ब्रह्माऽऽत्मजैः स्वीयैरिदमापूरयज्जगत्
Thus Brahmā filled the world with his own offspring.
अच्युतोऽपि भृगोः पुत्रीमुद्वाह्य कमलालयाम् 1.3.2.8.
Acyuta also married Bhṛgu’s daughter, the Lotus-Dweller.
सृष्टिस्थितिभ्यां द्रुहिणाब्जनाभौ स्वाधीनतां नूनमुपागताभ्याम्
By creation and preservation, the Lotus-Born and the Lotus-Naveled have surely attained their own dominion.
विरंच्यप्युतयोरासीद्विवादो मोहसंभवः
Even between Virancha and Utaya arose a dispute born of delusion.
रजोविकाराभ्यधिको बाह्ये नील इवोत्थितः
The excess of rajas manifested outwardly, like a blue hue appearing.
पितामहस्य लोकानां किमेवमतिमोहितः
Why is the grandfather of the worlds so bewildered?
त्वत्त एवोदितौ दैत्यौ निहत्य मधुकैटभौ
From you alone arose the two demons, Madhuka and Kaitabha, whom you slew.
त्वामेव सृजतो नित्यं बहुधा मम वेधसः
It is always you whom the Creator generates in many forms.
मम श्रमांभसोद्भूते महांभोधौ निमज्जतः
When I was submerged in the great ocean, born of the waters of my own fatigue,
मदुपज्ञे महांभोधौ स्रवते कोऽपि पन्नगः
In the great ocean created by me, some serpent flows forth.
कुतस्तमोमये ब्रूहि त्वयि सत्त्वगुणोदयः
Tell me, how does the quality of sattva arise in you, who are enveloped in darkness?
जलाशये प्रस्वपता दैत्यभीत्या जनार्दन
Janārdana, sleeping in the waters, out of fear of the demons.
चतुर्भ्यो मम वक्त्रेभ्यो वेदाः समुदयं गताः 1.3.2.9.
From my four mouths, the Vedas have arisen.
मया हि सृज्यते विश्वमिदं स्थावरजंगमम्
Indeed, by me this entire universe, both immobile and mobile, is created.
ततः कथय वैकुंठ मन्नियोज्येषु कश्चन
Therefore, Vaikuṇṭha, speak of someone to be appointed by me.
नंदिकेश्वर उवाच इत्थं सरोषसंरंभे विधौ पौरुषभाषिणि
Nandikeśvara said: Thus, in anger and excitement, when the creator spoke with pride,
नाभीसरोजसंजातो मम त्वमवधारय
Understand that you are born from my navel lotus.
योगनिद्रां मयोन्मुच्य पुरा ह मधुकैटभौ
Having cast off yogic sleep, I once slew Madhu and Kaitabha.
सोमकप्रमुखान्दैत्यान्हंतुमात्मेच्छया मम
To destroy the demons led by Somaka, I act according to my own will.
न किंचिदपि पश्यंति रजसारूढदृष्टयः
Those whose vision is dominated by passion perceive nothing at all.
अविनाभाविनी शक्तिर्ननु मे पद्मवासिनी
Is not my inseparable power the one who dwells in the lotus?
भूतान्यमूनि कालोऽयमात्मनोप्यहमेव हि
These beings, this time, and even my own self—indeed, I am all of these.
प्र आदित्या वसवो रुद्रा दिक्पाला मनवोऽप्यहम् 1.3.2.9.
The Ādityas, Vasus, Rudras, guardians of the directions, and Manus—I am all of them.
ममैव विनियोगेन सृष्टिशक्तिः स्वयं स्थिता
By my own command, the power of creation remains established.
ययावनल्पसमयःसवर्तसदृशस्तयो.
By her, even a brief moment becomes like an epoch.
उदयास्तमयौ स्यातां न तदा चंद्रसूर्ययोः
Sunrise and sunset occur, but not then for the moon and sun.
नाववुर्मरुतो वा न जज्वलुर्जातवेदसः
Neither did the Maruts blow, nor did the fires blaze.
समुद्राश्चुक्षुभुस्सर्वे पर्वताश्च चकंपिरे
All the oceans surged, and the mountains trembled.
