नरकाणामधोभागे स्थितः कालाग्निसंज्ञकः ३९.
Beneath the hells stands the one called Kālāgni, the fire of time.
यस्यैतत्सकलं विश्वं मूर्धाग्रे सर्षपायते ३९.
For whom this entire universe, at the tip of his head, appears as small as a mustard seed.
दिशां गजास्तत्र पद्मकुमुदांजनवामनाः ३९.
There, the elephants of the directions are dwarfed like lotuses, water-lilies, or collyrium sticks.
चतुर्लक्षसहस्राणि नवतिश्च शतानि च ३९.
There are four hundred thousand and ninety hundred such beings.
तदधो नरकाः कोट्यो द्विकोट्योऽग्निस्ततो महान् ३९.
Below that are crores of hells; twice as many fires, and then a great one.
चत्वारिंश्च्चकोट्यस्तु चतस्रश्च ततः पराः ३९.
There are forty crores, and then four more beyond that.
तदधोंऽडकटाहोथ कोटिमात्रस्तथापरः ३९.
Below that is the egg-shaped vessel, measuring a crore, and another likewise.
देवीनां कोटिकोटीभिः संवृता तत्र पालिनी ३९.
It is enclosed by crores upon crores of goddesses, who guard it there.
कालाग्निं प्रेरयत्येव कल्पांते दह्यते जगत् ३९.
At the end of the aeon, she sends forth the fire of time, and the world is burned.
मध्यसूत्रे कटाहे च पालकांस्ताञ्छृणुष्व मे ३९.
Hear from me about the guardians in the central thread and in the vessel.
तक्षकेशः स्थितः पश्चादुत्तरे केतुमानिति ३९.
Takṣakeśa stands at the rear, and Ketumān is in the north.
कोटिकोटी युता देवी देवीनां पालयत्यदः ३९.
That goddess, joined with crores upon crores, guards the goddesses.
नमामि तानहं नित्यं ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेश्वरान् ३९.
I always bow to them: Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshvara.
तं च वर्णयितुं ब्रह्मा शक्तो नैवास्मदादयः ३९.
Even Brahma is not able to describe him, nor are others like us.
ब्रह्मांडं संवृतं ह्येतत्कटाहेन समंततः ३९.
This universe is enclosed entirely by the vessel.
दशोत्तरेण पयसा वृतं तच्चापि तेजसा ३९.
It is covered by ten layers of water, and that too by radiance.
अहंकारश्च महता तं चापि प्रकृतिः परा ३९.
Ego and the great principle, and also the supreme nature.
प्राकृतं चरणं पार्थ तदनंतं प्रकीर्तितम् ३९.
The primal foot, O Partha, is said to be endless.
ईदृशानां तथा चात्र कोटिकोटिशतानि च ३९.
Likewise, here there are hundreds of crores of such as these.
यस्यैवं वैभवं पार्थ तं नमामी सदाशिवम् ३९.
O Partha, I bow to Sadashiva, whose glory is thus.
य एवंविधसंमोहतारकं न शिवं भजेत् ३९.
He who does not worship Shiva, the liberator from such delusion—
काष्ठा निमेषा दश पंच चाहुस्त्रिंशच्च काष्ठा गणयेत्कला हि ३९.
A kāṣṭhā is ten nimeṣas; five are an āhu; thirty kāṣṭhās make a kalā.
दिवसे पंच कालाः स्युस्त्रिमुहूर्ताः श्रृणुष्व तान् ३९.
There are five divisions in the day, each consisting of three muhūrtas; listen to them.
सायाह्नः पंचमश्चापि मुहूर्ता दश पंच च ३९.
The fifth is the evening, and there are ten plus five muhūrtas.
मासः पक्षद्वयेनोक्तो द्वौ मासौ चार्कजावृतुः ३९.
A month is said to be made of two fortnights, and two months are called a season.
चतुर्भेदं मासमाहुः पंचभेदं च वत्सरम् ३९.
They declare the month to have four divisions, and the year to have five divisions.
इद्वत्सरस्तृतीयोऽसौ चतुर्थश्चानुवत्सरः ३९.
The third is called 'idvatsara,' and the fourth is 'anuvatsara.'
मासेन च मनुष्याणामहोरात्रं च पैतृकम् ३९.
For humans, a month; for ancestors, a day and night.
मानुषेण च वर्षेण दैविको दिवसः स्मृतः ३९.
By a human year, a divine day is reckoned.
वर्षेण चैव देवानां मतः सप्तर्षिवासरः ३९.
By a year of the gods, the day of the Seven Sages is considered.
