सप्तमश्च ध्रुवे बद्धो वायुर्नाम्ना परावहः ३८.
The seventh, bound to Dhruva, is the wind called Parāvaha.
यं समासाद्य वेगेन दिशामंतं प्रपेदिरे ३८.
Having encountered it, with speed, they reached the ends of the directions.
एवमेते दितेः पुत्राः सप्तसप्त व्यवस्थिताः ३८.
Thus, these sons of Diti are arranged in groups of seven.
ध्रुवादूर्ध्वमसूर्यं चाप्यनक्षत्रमतारकम् ३८.
Above Dhruva, there is that which is beyond the sun, without stars or planets.
इत्यूर्ध्वं ते समाख्यांतं पातालान्यथ मे श्रृणु॥ ३८.
Thus, the upper regions have been described; now hear from me about the netherworlds.
सहस्रसप्तत्युच्छ्राये पातालानि परस्परम् ३९.
The netherworlds, each seventy thousand in height, are situated one below the other.
तलातलं च सुतलं पातालं चापि सप्तमम् ३९.
Talātala, Sutala, and Pātāla are the seventh.
भूमयो यत्र कौरव्य वरप्रासादशोभिताः ३९.
O Kauravya, there are lands adorned with splendid palaces.
स्वर्लोकादपि रम्याणि दृष्टानि बहुशो मया ३९.
I have often seen places there more delightful even than the world of the gods.
दैत्यदानवकन्याभिर्महारूपाभिरन्विते ३९.
They are filled with the daughters of Daityas and Dānavas, possessing great beauty.
यत्र नोष्णं न वा शीतं न वर्षं दुःखमेव च ३९.
There, it is neither hot nor cold, nor is there rain or suffering.
पाताले सप्तमे चास्ति लिंगं श्रीहाटकेश्वरम् ३९.
In the seventh Pātāla, there is the liṅga called Śrī Hāṭakeśvara.
हाटकस्य तु लिंगस्य प्रासादो योजनायुतः ३९.
The temple of the liṅga of Hāṭaka is ten thousand yojanas in size.
तच्चार्यंति तल्लिंगं नानानागेन्द्रसत्तमाः ३९.
There, the best of the Nāga lords worship that liṅga.
पापिनो येषु पात्यंते ताञ्छृणुष्व महामते ३९.
Hear, O wise one, about those sinners who are cast into these places.
रौरवः शूकरो रोधस्तालो विशसनस्तथा ३९.
Raurava, Śūkaro, Rodha, Tāla, and Viśasana are among them.
रुधिरांधो वैतरणी कृमिशः कृमिभोजनः ३९.
Blinded by blood, the river Vaitaraṇī is filled with worms, and there, one becomes food for worms.
तथा पूयवहः पापो वह्निज्वालोऽप्यधःशिराः ३९.
Likewise, the sinner is carried by pus, or with flames of fire, and is cast down headfirst.
श्वभोजनो विसूचिश्चाप्यवीचिश्च तथाऽपरः ३९.
There is also the place where one is eaten by dogs, the needle-torment, and another called Avīci.
सुरापः सूकरं याति तालं मिथ्याम नुष्यहा ३९.
The drinker of liquor becomes a pig; the one who commits falsehood or kills a man goes to Tāla.
गुरूणामवमंता यचो महाज्वाले निपात्यते ३९.
He who shows disrespect to teachers is cast into the great blazing fire.
कृमिभक्ष्ये देवद्वेष्टा कृमिशे तु दुरिष्टकृत् ३९.
The hater of gods is consumed by worms; the doer of evil is also cast among worms.
मिथ्याजीवविरोधी विशसने कूटशस्त्रकृत् ३९.
One who opposes righteous livelihood, or forges false weapons, is thrown into the place of torture.
मार्ज्जारकुक्कुटश्वानपक्षिपोष्टा प्रयाति च ३९.
He who nourishes cats, cocks, dogs, or birds, also goes there.
नक्षत्ररंगजीवी च याति वैतरणीं नरः ३९.
A man who lives by astrology goes to the river Vaitaraṇī.
असिपत्रवनं याति वृक्षच्छेदी वृथैव यत् ३९.
He who cuts down trees without reason goes to the forest of sword-leaves.
परस्त्रीं च परान्नं च गच्छन्संदंशमेति च ३९.
One who approaches another's wife or eats another's food attains the torment of the iron pincers.
शरीरमदमत्ताश्च यांति चैते श्वभोजनम् ३९.
Those intoxicated by the pride of the body also go to the place where they are eaten by dogs.
इत्येवमादिभिः पापैरशास्त्रौघस्य सेवनैः ३९.
Thus, by engaging in such sins and following the flood of unrighteous acts,
तस्माद्य इच्छेदेतेभ्यो विमोक्षं बुद्धिमान्नरः ३९.
Therefore, whoever desires liberation from these should be wise.
