भूमिसूर्यांतरं तच्च भुवर्लोकः प्रकीर्तितः ३८.
The space between the earth and the sun is called the Bhuvar-loka.
स्वर्लोकः सोऽपि गदितो लोकसंस्थानचिंतकैः ३८.
The Svarga-loka has also been described by those who contemplate the arrangement of worlds.
द्वे कोट्यौ च जनो यत्र निवसंति चतुःसनाः ३८.
There, two crores of people reside, all belonging to the four classes.
वैराजा यत्र ते देवाः स्थिता दाहविवर्जिताः ३८.
There dwell the Viraja gods, who are free from burning afflictions.
अपुनर्मरका यत्र ब्रह्मलोको हि स स्मृतः ३८.
That place is called Brahma-loka, where there is no return to death.
शुभं निरुपमं स्थानं तदूर्ध्वं संप्रकाशते ३८.
Above that, a place shines forth, auspicious and incomparable.
जनस्तपस्तथा सत्यमिति चाकृतकं त्रयम् ३८.
Jana, Tapas, and Satya are the three realms, uncreated.
शून्यो भवति कल्पांते योत्यंतं न विनश्यति ३८.
At the end of a kalpa, it becomes empty, but the utmost realm does not perish.
यज्ञैर्दानैर्जपैर्होमैस्तीर्थैर्व्रतसमुच्चयैः ३८.
Through sacrifices, gifts, recitations, oblations, pilgrimages, and the accumulation of vows,
ततश्चांडस्य शिरसो धारा नीरमयी शिवा ३८.
Then, from the head of Aṇḍa, a stream of auspicious water flows.
ततो महीतलं सर्वं पातालं प्रविवेश सा ३८.
Afterwards, that stream entered all the earth and the netherworld.
देवीनां कोटिकोटीभिः संवृता पिंगलेन च ३८.
It was surrounded by countless crores of goddesses and by Piṅgala.
निहंति दुष्टसंघातान्महाबलपराक्रमा ३८.
Of great strength and valor, she destroys wicked hosts.
पृथिवीं समभिक्रम्य संस्थितो मेघमंडले ३८.
Having traversed the earth, she stands in the circle of clouds.
धूमजाश्वोष्मजा मेघाः सामुद्रैयन पूरिताः ३८.
Clouds born of smoke and heat, filled with oceanic water.
द्वितीयश्चावहो नाम निबद्धः सूर्यमंडले ३८.
The second, called Avaha, is fixed in the solar orb.
तृतीयश्चोद्वहो नाम चंद्रस्कंधे प्रतिष्ठितः ३८.
The third, called Udvaha, is established on the shoulder of the moon.
चतुर्थः संवहो नाम स्थितो नक्षत्रमण्डले ३८.
The fourth, called Samvaha, is situated in the circle of stars.
ग्रहेषु पंचमः सोऽपि विवहो नाम मारुतः ३८.
Among the planets, the fifth wind is called Vivaha.
षष्ठः परिवहो नाम स्थितः सप्तर्षिमंडले ३८.
The sixth, named Parivaha, is established in the circle of the Seven Sages.
सप्तमश्च ध्रुवे बद्धो वायुर्नाम्ना परावहः ३८.
The seventh, bound to Dhruva, is the wind called Parāvaha.
यं समासाद्य वेगेन दिशामंतं प्रपेदिरे ३८.
Having encountered it, with speed, they reached the ends of the directions.
एवमेते दितेः पुत्राः सप्तसप्त व्यवस्थिताः ३८.
Thus, these sons of Diti are arranged in groups of seven.
ध्रुवादूर्ध्वमसूर्यं चाप्यनक्षत्रमतारकम् ३८.
Above Dhruva, there is that which is beyond the sun, without stars or planets.
इत्यूर्ध्वं ते समाख्यांतं पातालान्यथ मे श्रृणु॥ ३८.
Thus, the upper regions have been described; now hear from me about the netherworlds.
सहस्रसप्तत्युच्छ्राये पातालानि परस्परम् ३९.
The netherworlds, each seventy thousand in height, are situated one below the other.
तलातलं च सुतलं पातालं चापि सप्तमम् ३९.
Talātala, Sutala, and Pātāla are the seventh.
भूमयो यत्र कौरव्य वरप्रासादशोभिताः ३९.
O Kauravya, there are lands adorned with splendid palaces.
स्वर्लोकादपि रम्याणि दृष्टानि बहुशो मया ३९.
I have often seen places there more delightful even than the world of the gods.
दैत्यदानवकन्याभिर्महारूपाभिरन्विते ३९.
They are filled with the daughters of Daityas and Dānavas, possessing great beauty.
