अयनस्योत्तरस्यादौ मकरं याति भास्करः ३८.
At the beginning of the northern course, the sun enters Capricorn.
त्रिष्वेतेष्वथ भुक्तेषु ततो वैषुवतीं गतिम् ३८.
When he has traversed these three, then he attains the equinoctial path.
ततो रात्रिः क्षयं याति वर्धते तु दिनं दिनम् ३८.
Then night diminishes, and day increases day by day.
राशिं कर्कटकं प्राप्य कुरुते दक्षिणायांनम् ३८.
Having reached the sign of Cancer, he makes the southern course.
दक्षिणायक्रमे सूर्यस्तथा शीघ्रं निवर्तते ३८.
In the southern course, the sun quickly turns back.
तस्मात्प्रकृष्टां भूमिं स कालेनाल्पेन गच्छति ३८.
Therefore, in a short time, he traverses a greater portion of the earth.
तथोदगयने सूर्यः सर्पते मंदविक्रमः ३८.
Likewise, in the northern course, the sun moves with slow steps.
संध्याकाले च मंदेहाः सूर्यमिच्छंति खादितुम् ३८.
At twilight, the Maṇḍehas wish to devour the sun.
अक्षयत्वं शरीराणां मरणं च दिनेदिने ३८.
The bodies are imperishable, yet death occurs every day.
ततो गायत्रिपूतं यद्द्विजास्तोयं क्षिपंति च ३८.
Therefore, the water purified by Gāyatrī, which the twice-born offer, is cast forth.
ये संध्यां नाप्युपासंते कृतघ्ना यांति रौरवम् ३८.
Those who do not perform the twilight worship, being ungrateful, go to Raurava.
अप्सरोग्रामणीसर्पैरथो याति च सप्तभिः ३८.
Then he goes with the seven, with the chiefs of the Apsarases and the serpents.
पूषा च सविता सोऽथ भगस्त्वष्टा च कीर्तितः ३८.
Pūṣā, Savitā, Bhagā, and Tvaṣṭā are also named.
ततो दिवाकरस्थानान्मंडलं शशिनः स्थितम् ३८.
Then, in the place of the sun, the circle of the moon is established.
कुंदाभा दश चैवाश्वा वामदक्षिणतो युताः ३८.
Ten horses, shining like jasmine, are yoked to the left and right.
नक्षत्रमण्डलं कृत्स्नमुपरिष्टात्प्रकाशते ३८.
Above, the entire constellation circle shines forth.
विंशतिश्च तथा कोट्यो नक्षत्राणां प्रकीर्तिताः ३८.
Twenty crore stars are also described.
वाय्वग्निद्रव्यसंभूतो रथश्चंद्रसुतस्य च ३८.
The chariot of the moon's son is formed from wind, fire, and material substance.
द्विलक्षश्चोत्तरे तस्माद्बुधाच्चाप्युशना स्मृतः ३८.
Beyond that, at two lakhs, Budha and also Uśanā are remembered.
लक्षद्वयेन भौमस्य स्मृतो देवपुरोहितः ३८.
At two lakhs from Bhauma, the divine priest is remembered.
सौरिर्बृहस्पतेश्चोर्ध्वं द्विलक्षे समुपस्थितः ३८.
Sauri is situated above Bṛhaspati at two lakhs.
स्वर्भानोस्तुरगाश्चाष्टौ भृंगाभा धूसरारथम् ३८.
Svarbhānu's eight horses, resembling bees, pull a dusky chariot.
सौरेर्लक्षं स्मृतं चोर्ध्वं ततः सप्तर्षिमण्डलम् ३८.
A lakh is remembered above Sauri, then the circle of the Seven Sages.
मेढीभूतः समस्तस्य ज्योतिश्चक्रस्य वै ध्रुवः ३८.
Dhruva stands as the axis of the entire wheel of lights.
यमाहुर्वासुदेवस्य रूपमात्मानमव्ययम् ३८.
They declare this to be the form and imperishable self of Vāsudeva.
नवयोजनसाहस्रं मण्डलं सवितुः स्मृतम् ३८.
The circle of Savitā is said to be nine thousand yojanas.
तुल्यस्तयोस्तु स्वर्भानुर्भूत्वाधस्तात्प्रसर्पति ३८.
Svarbhānu, equal to both, moves below.
चन्द्रस्य षोडशो भागो भार्गवश्च विधीयते ३८.
The sixteenth part of the moon is assigned to Bhārgava.
बृहस्पतेः पादहीनौ वक्रसौरी बुधस्तथा ३८.
Bṛhaspati is lacking a quarter; Vakra, Sauri, and Budha likewise.
योजनार्धप्रमाणानि भानि ह्रस्वं न विद्यते ३८.
The measures of the lights are half a yojana; there is no diminishment.
