तत्र प्रैयव्रत इध्मजिह्वः पतिस्तत्पुत्रसिवसुरम्यसुभद्र शांत्यशप्तमृताभयनामांकितानि सप्त वर्षाणि॥ ३७.
There, Praiyavrata was the lord; Idhmajihva was his son, and his sons were Sivasuramyasubhadra, Śāṃtya, Śapta, Mṛta, and Ābhaya—these are the names of the seven regions.
वर्णाश्च हंसपतंगोर्ध्वांचनसत्यांगसंज्ञाश्चत्वारो भगवंतं सूर्यं यजंते॥ ३७.
And the classes named Haṃsa, Pataṃga, Ūrdhvāṃcana, and Satyāṃga, four in number, worship the blessed Sun.
प्रश्रस्य विष्णुरूपंयत्तत्रोत्थस्य ब्रह्मणोऽमृतस्य च ३७.
There, Praśrasya is the form of Viṣṇu, arisen from Brahman and from the immortal.
स्वर्णपत्राणि नियुतं योजनानां सहस्रकम् ३७.
Its golden leaves extend for a thousand yojanas.
तस्याधिपतिः प्रैयव्रतो वीतहोत्रनामा तत्पुत्रौ रमणकघातकौ॥ ३७.
Its ruler was Praiyavrata, named Vītahotra; his sons were Ramaṇaka and Ghātaka.
तन्नामचिह्नतं खंडद्वयम्॥ ३७.
That region is marked by two divisions.
तयोरंतरालेमानसाचलो नाम वलयाकारः पर्वतो यस्मिन्भ्रमति भगवान्भास्कर इति॥ ३७.
Between them is the mountain called Mānasācala, ring-shaped, upon which the blessed Sun revolves.
तत्र वर्णाश्च न संति केवलं समानास्ते ब्रह्म ध्यायंति॥ ३७.
There, there are no classes; they are all equal, meditating upon Brahman.
यद्यत्कर्ममयं लिंगं ब्रह्मलिंगं जनोर्चयन् ३७.
Whatever is a form made of action, that is the Brahman-form, which they accumulate.
नैषु क्रोधो न मात्सर्यं पुण्यपापार्जनेन च ३७.
Among them there is no anger, no envy, nor acquisition of merit or sin.
जपंतः कामिनीयुक्ता विहरंत्यमरा इव ३७.
Reciting, joined with their beloveds, they wander like immortals.
भूमेर्योजनलक्षे च कौरव्य रविमंडलम् ३८.
At a hundred thousand yojanas from the earth, O Kauravya, is the solar orb.
ईषादंडस्ततैवास्य द्विगुणः परिकीर्तितः ३८.
Its slight staff is said to be twice that measure.
योजनानां तु तस्याक्षस्तत्र चक्रं प्रतिष्ठितम् ३८.
There, at that distance in yojanas, is fixed its axle and wheel.
चत्वारिंशत्सहस्राणि द्वितीयोऽक्षोऽपि विस्तृतः ३८.
The second axle, too, is extended to forty thousand (units).
अक्षप्रमाणमुभयोः प्रमाणं तद्युगार्द्धयोः ३८.
The measure of both axles is the same; that is the measure for the two half-ages of the yuga.
द्वितीयोऽक्षस्तथा सव्ये चक्रं तन्मानसे स्थितम् ३८.
Likewise, the second axle is on the left, and the wheel is established in the mind.
गायत्री च बृहत्युष्णिग्जगती त्रिष्टुवेव च ३८.
Gāyatrī, Bṛhatī, Uṣṇik, Jagatī, and Triṣṭubh as well.
नैवास्तमनमर्कस्य नोदयः सर्वदा सतः ३८.
For the sun, who always exists, there is neither setting nor rising.
शक्रदीनां पुरे तिष्ठन्स्पृशत्येष पुरत्रयम् ३८.
Dwelling in the city of Indra and the gods, he touches the three cities.
अयनस्योत्तरस्यादौ मकरं याति भास्करः ३८.
At the beginning of the northern course, the sun enters Capricorn.
त्रिष्वेतेष्वथ भुक्तेषु ततो वैषुवतीं गतिम् ३८.
When he has traversed these three, then he attains the equinoctial path.
ततो रात्रिः क्षयं याति वर्धते तु दिनं दिनम् ३८.
Then night diminishes, and day increases day by day.
राशिं कर्कटकं प्राप्य कुरुते दक्षिणायांनम् ३८.
Having reached the sign of Cancer, he makes the southern course.
दक्षिणायक्रमे सूर्यस्तथा शीघ्रं निवर्तते ३८.
In the southern course, the sun quickly turns back.
तस्मात्प्रकृष्टां भूमिं स कालेनाल्पेन गच्छति ३८.
Therefore, in a short time, he traverses a greater portion of the earth.
तथोदगयने सूर्यः सर्पते मंदविक्रमः ३८.
Likewise, in the northern course, the sun moves with slow steps.
संध्याकाले च मंदेहाः सूर्यमिच्छंति खादितुम् ३८.
At twilight, the Maṇḍehas wish to devour the sun.
अक्षयत्वं शरीराणां मरणं च दिनेदिने ३८.
The bodies are imperishable, yet death occurs every day.
ततो गायत्रिपूतं यद्द्विजास्तोयं क्षिपंति च ३८.
Therefore, the water purified by Gāyatrī, which the twice-born offer, is cast forth.
