भूतेभ्यो निर्भयश्चापि सर्वदुःखविवर्जितः ३६.
He will be fearless of spirits and free from all suffering.
श्रृणुयात्स्कंदचरितं महाधनपतिर्भवेत् ३६.
Whoever hears the deeds of Skanda will become a possessor of great wealth.
इदं तत्परमं धन्यं सर्वदोषहरं सदा ३६.
This is indeed supremely blessed and always destroys all faults.
वरमेनं ददुर्देवाः स्कंदस्याथ गता दिवम्॥ ३६.
The gods granted this boon and then went to heaven after Skanda.
बर्बरीतीर्थमाहात्म्यमथो वक्ष्यामि तेऽर्जुन ३७.
Now, Arjuna, I shall tell you the greatness of the holy place called Barbarī.
कुमारिकेति विख्याता तस्या नाम्ना प्रकथ्यते ३७.
It is renowned by the name Kumārikā, and is spoken of by that name.
यया कृता पृथिव्यां च नानाग्रामादिकल्पना ३७.
By her, the arrangement of various villages and such on earth was made.
महदेतन्ममाश्चर्यं श्रोतव्यं परमं मुने ३७.
This is a great and wondrous matter of mine, O sage, which must be heard.
कथं विश्वमिदं जातं कर्मजातिप्रकल्पितम् ३७.
How did this universe, determined by karma and caste, come into being?
अव्यक्तोऽस्मिन्निरालोके प्रधानपुरुषावुभौ ३७.
In this unmanifest, lightless state, both Pradhāna and Puruṣa existed.
ततः स्वभावकालाभ्यां स्वरूपाभ्यां समीरितम् ३७.
Then, by their own inherent nature and time, their true forms were stirred.
महत्तत्त्वाद्विकुर्वाणादहंतत्त्वं व्यजायत ३७.
From the evolving principle of Mahat arose the principle of ego (ahaṃkāra).
तामसात्पंच जातानि तन्मात्राणि वुदुर्बुधाः ३७.
From the tamasic aspect, five subtle elements were produced, as the wise know.
सात्त्विकाच्चाप्यहंकाराद्विद्वि कर्मेद्रियाणि च ३७.
And from the sāttvic aspect of ego, the senses of knowledge and action were produced.
चतुर्विशतितत्त्वानि जातानीति पुरा विदुः ३७.
Thus, the ancients knew that twenty-four principles were born.
बुद्बुदाकारतां जग्मुरंडं जातं ततः शुभम् ३७.
They took the form of a bubble; from that, the auspicious cosmic egg was born.
आत्मास्य कथितो ब्रह्मा व्यभजत्स त्रिधा त्विदम् ३७.
Its soul is said to be Brahmā, who then divided it threefold.
नागा दैत्याश्च पाताले त्रिधैतत्परिकल्पितम् ३७.
Nāgas and Daityas were assigned to the netherworld; thus, this was divided three ways.
पातालानि च द्वीपानि स्वर्लोकाः सप्तसप्त च ३७.
The netherworlds, the continents, and the heavenly realms are each seven in number.
लक्षयोजनविस्तारं जंबूद्वीपं प्रकीर्त्यते ३७.
Jambūdvīpa is said to be a hundred thousand yojanas in extent.
शाकद्वीपं द्विगुणतो जंबूद्वीपात्ततः परम् ३७.
Śākadvīpa, next in order, is twice the size of Jambūdvīpa.
सुरातोयेन दैत्यानां मोहकार्यर्णवेन हि ३७.
By the ocean of divine waters, which serves to delude the Daityas, indeed.
कुशद्वीपं द्विगुणतस्ततस्तत्परतः स्मृतम् ३७.
Kusha-dvipa is said to be twice as large as the previous one.
ततः परं क्रौञ्चसंज्ञं द्विगुणं हि घृताब्धिना ३७.
Beyond that is the region called Krauncha, which is again twice as large, surrounded by the ocean of clarified butter.
इक्षुसारस्वरूपेण समुद्रेण परिवृतम् ३७.
Encircled by a sea having the nature of sugarcane juice.
स्वादुतोयेन रम्येण समुद्रेण समंततः ३७.
Surrounded on all sides by a delightful ocean of sweet water.
पंचाशच्च सहस्राणि सप्तद्वीपाः ससागराः ३७.
Fifty thousand are the seven islands together with their oceans.
अपां वृद्धिक्षयो दृष्टः पक्षयोः शुक्लकृष्णयोः ३७.
The increase and decrease of waters is observed during the bright and dark fortnights.
देवानां क्रीडनस्थानं लोकालोकस्ततः परम् ३७.
Beyond that is Lokāloka, the playground of the gods.
अस्य बाह्ये तमो घोरं दुष्प्रेक्ष्यं जीववर्जितम् ३७.
Outside this lies terrible darkness, impossible to behold, devoid of living beings.
