आसीद्दीनमनाः पार्थ शुशोच च महामतिः ३३.
He became despondent, O Partha, and that great-minded one grieved.
शोच्यं पातकिनं मां च संस्तुवध्वं कथं सुराः ३३.
How is it, O gods, that you praise me, a sinner, who is worthy of sorrow and destruction?
स तु रुद्रांशजः प्रोक्तस्तस्य द्रुह्यन्न रुद्रँवत् ३३.
He, however, who is called a portion of Rudra, acts treacherously toward him, just as one would toward Rudra.
वीरं हि पुरुषं हत्वा गोसहस्रेण मुच्यते ३३.
Indeed, by killing a heroic man, one is freed by giving a thousand cows.
पापशीलस्य हनने दोषो यद्यपि नास्ति च ३३.
Even though there is no fault in killing a person of sinful conduct,
तदहं श्रोतुमिच्छामि प्रायाश्चित्तं च किंचन ३३.
Therefore, I wish to hear what expiation there is for this.
इति संशोचतस्तस्य शिवपुत्रस्य धीमतः ३३.
Thus, as the wise son of Shiva was lamenting,
श्रुतिः स्मृतिश्चेतिहासाः पुराणं च शिवात्मज ३३.
The Veda, the Smriti, the Itihasas, and the Purana, O son of Shiva,
स्वप्राणान्यः परप्राणैः प्रपुष्णात्यघृणः पुमान् ३३.
A man without compassion who sustains his own life by the lives of others—
अन्नादे भ्रूणहा मार्ष्टि पत्यौ भार्या पचारिणी ३३.
The eater of food, the killer of a fetus, the woman unfaithful to her husband—
पापिनं पुरुषं यो हि समर्थो न निहंति च ३३.
He who is able to kill a sinful man but does not,
पापिनो यदि वध्यंते नैव पालनसंस्थितैः ३३.
If the sinful are not slain by those established in protection,
कथं यज्ञाश्च वेदाश्च वर्तते विश्वधारकाः ३३.
How then would sacrifices and the Vedas, which uphold the universe, continue?
अथ चेद्रुद्रभक्तेषु बहुमानस्तव प्रभो ३३.
But if, O Lord, you have great regard for the devotees of Rudra,
आजन्मसंभवैः पापैः पुमान्येन विमुच्यते ३३.
A man is freed from sins accumulated since birth by that.
कृते पापेऽनुतापो वै यस्य स्कन्द प्रजायते ३३.
O Skanda, for one whose remorse arises after committing a sin,
न यस्यालमपि ब्रह्मामहिमानं विवर्णितुम् ३३.
There is no one at all who can fully describe the greatness of Brahma.
अकांडे यच्च ब्रह्मांडक्षयोद्युक्तं हलाहलम् ३३.
And that which, at the end of the age, is the deadly poison prepared for the destruction of the cosmic egg—
दुःखतांडवदीनोऽभूदण्डसंकीर्णमानसः ३३.
He became one whose mind was troubled by the pain of the world-egg, filled with distress.
वियद्व्यापी सुरसरित्प्रवाहो विप्रुषाकृतिः ३३.
He who pervades the sky, whose form is the flow of the divine river, and who is like a drop of water.
यज्ञादिकाश्च ये धर्मा विना यस्यार्चनं वृथा ३३.
All duties such as sacrifices and the like, if performed without worship of Him, are in vain.
क्षोणी रथो विधिर्यंता शरोऽहं मन्दरो धनुः ३३.
The earth is the chariot, destiny is the charioteer, I am the arrow, and the Mandara mountain is the bow.
आराधनं तस्य केचिद्योगमार्गेण कुर्वते ३३.
Some perform worship of Him by means of the path of yoga.
तस्मात्तस्यार्चयेल्लिंगं भुक्तिमुक्ती य इच्छति ३३.
Therefore, whoever desires enjoyment or liberation should worship His liṅga.
अभूद्यस्य परिच्छेदे नालमावां बभूविव ३३.
In measuring Him, there was no limit; neither of us was able to reach the end.
तस्माल्लिंगमिति प्रोक्तं देवै रुद्रस्य धीमतः ३३.
Therefore, the gods have declared the liṅga to be the symbol of the wise Rudra.
ब्रह्मादितृणपर्यंतं तेनेदं तर्पितं जगत् ३३.
By that, the entire universe, from Brahmā down to a blade of grass, is satisfied.
तर्पितं तेन विश्वं स्यात्सुधया पितृभिः समम् ३३.
By that, the whole world is satisfied, along with the ancestors, by nectar.
तेन संपूजितं विश्वं सकलं नात्र संशयः ३३.
By that, the entire universe is worshipped—of this there is no doubt.
भोजितं तेन विश्वं स्याल्लिंगस्यैवं फलं महत् ३३.
By that, the whole world is nourished; such is the great fruit of the liṅga.
