Then, delighted, Keshava the destroyer of enemies again spoke to Skanda:
He is oppressing the hosts of gods, carrying Mount Krauncha; strike down that wicked-minded one who dwells on Krauncha with the force of your spear.
Then the mighty Skanda approached Krauncha, which resounded with the cries of many serpents.
There were thousands of serpents and tens of millions of demons there.
Even today, O Partha, that cleft in Krauncha remains.
Through it, swans and kraunchas go to Lake Manasa, and likewise the mind of the virtuous returns after being drawn away or sent forth.
Then the gods led by Indra praised him, and the excellent women led by Rambha sang and danced.
Then they saw that mountain, massive as it was, fallen upon the earth.
Seeing this, the gods were amazed and repeatedly cried out in victory.
Rising up, the demon Taraka wondered when he might be struck down.
He became despondent, O Partha, and that great-minded one grieved.
How is it, O gods, that you praise me, a sinner, who is worthy of sorrow and destruction?
He, however, who is called a portion of Rudra, acts treacherously toward him, just as one would toward Rudra.
Indeed, by killing a heroic man, one is freed by giving a thousand cows.
Even though there is no fault in killing a person of sinful conduct,
Therefore, I wish to hear what expiation there is for this.
Thus, as the wise son of Shiva was lamenting,
The Veda, the Smriti, the Itihasas, and the Purana, O son of Shiva,
A man without compassion who sustains his own life by the lives of others—
The eater of food, the killer of a fetus, the woman unfaithful to her husband—
He who is able to kill a sinful man but does not,
If the sinful are not slain by those established in protection,
How then would sacrifices and the Vedas, which uphold the universe, continue?
But if, O Lord, you have great regard for the devotees of Rudra,
A man is freed from sins accumulated since birth by that.
O Skanda, for one whose remorse arises after committing a sin,
There is no one at all who can fully describe the greatness of Brahma.
And that which, at the end of the age, is the deadly poison prepared for the destruction of the cosmic egg—
He became one whose mind was troubled by the pain of the world-egg, filled with distress.
He who pervades the sky, whose form is the flow of the divine river, and who is like a drop of water.
